My fiance's take on conference realignment - quo vadis - 04-14-2012 08:14 PM

I was responding to a post by BigEastHomer when my fiance walked by and asked me what i was doing. I told her and she asked me to read my comment to her. My fiance, who knows nothing about nor cares nothing about college athletics, asked me to explain why i said that the Big East was "short of a quorom" before admitting the recently added teams. I explained that we had lost 4 schools to other conferences and thus needed to add new ones in order to remain a viable football conference. When she asked why TCU, WVU, SYR, and Pitt had left the conference, i said it was because of more money, whereupon she made a number of observations:

1) "well that sounds kind of corrupt, doesn't it? Why do they get more money by joining another conference"? Shouldn't all the conferences have the same money"?

2) "Why are there more than 6 conferences? Shouldn't "they" divide the country up into 6 sections, horizontally across the middle and then vertically into three equal sections, and just put all the schools in those areas in the same conference?"

3) When i explained that some conferences, like the SEC, more or less fit her divide-the-country-up scheme but others do not, she said, referring to the conferences that have schools scattered all over the country "that sounds like those dorms in Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds where all the losers and leftovers that the prestigious frat houses don't want get thrown into".

Anyway, i laughed and cried at the same time, so thought i'd share, LOL.

The worst part about this post is that she's right...

She has common sense and analyzes well, she's a keeper, Quo.

But the Animal House fraterny ended up doing pretty good after all. So maybe she is on to something.

You need to explain to her that logic, common sense, and perspective have no place in college athletics.

Yeah but Animal House was a movie.....

In real life....they would have been shut down and kicked out of college....end of story.

Over there is Terry Aurback, captain of the swim team. Thats Carl Phillips, editor or the Daily Faberian......and Flounder, over here in the Big Eastern sitting area, we have Clayton, Sidney, Jugdish, Mohammad, and Lonny....

Well at least we know who will be in charge of the house in the near future :) Someone in the house got to have some common sense.

I'm sure you explained to her that just like how maybe a neighbor's house is valued at a much higher amount than others....or how some cars are valued at a much higher amount than others....same goes for College Football Conferences....some provide much more value than others.

Its not hard to explain how the SEC brings more value ($$$$ with millions of more eyeballs) to their TV partners (and their advertisers) than say WAC Football.

Her view is that she wishes all were equal, and like most things in life, that ain't happening.

Yes, i explained all of that to her. When we discusses it further, she agreed that it made sense that the Big Ten gets more money than say the SWAC, but that all conferences within the same relative "big time" level should have the same money.

It is an interesting question, because conferences are themselves somewhat socialistic. E.g., in the Big Ten, surely Ohio State is responsible for attracting more of the big football media dollars than are Northwestern or Indiana, in the SEC schools like Alabama and Florida bring in more than Mississippi State or Vandy, etc., and yet within those conferences when it comes to conference-generated revenues it is share and share alike. My fiance just wants to extend that logic to the larger realm of FBS football.

I don't agree with her, but ...

In regards to TV and Bowl contracts...that is correct...but outside of that, their individual $$$$ teams like Bama or UF or OSU "dwarf" that of those mentioned above...as some of their own media rights (for replay of games, coaches shows and radio rights...not even counting tens of millions in donations/ticket sales, merchandise sales, etc...) come close to their conf TV $$$.

That is why i said "conference generated" dollars are shared equally. But obviously, there are team-generated revenues that are not. E.g., if Alabama sells 100,000 tickets per game at an average price of $100 a ticket, they will rake in far more than Vandy does selling 40,000 tickets a game for $35 a ticket.

And you actually don't state the case strongly enough. The really big revenue isn't even the conference media deals everyone talks about, it is the local revenue, which at truly big time schools dwarfs the conference media deal money.

For example, LSU gets about $22 million per year from their membership in the NCAA and SEC media deals. But, they generate almost $70 million per year locally, from the kinds of things you mention above.

Schools that think they can rise up monetarily to true "big time" status by joining AQ conferences with big media deals are fooling themselves. Ultimately, programs are built at home. Until USF and UCF can get 90,000 fans to show up at games and pay thousands for personal seat licenses and the like, we will never be in the same league with the Floridas and Ohio States no matter what our next TV contract looks like ...

RE: My fiance's take on conference realignment - Cubanbull - 04-15-2012 10:26 AM

But they go hand in hand. Do you really think that Vandy would be able to generate the same local fan support playing sun belt teams as playing sec teams? Do you think they would get same support in buying seat licenses and same ticket prices if they played in the sun belt? It's a lot of that tv media money that allows these schools to compete for better coaches and improve facilities which lead to more local support.

We're the Poindexter-Flounder conference!

No question, conference membership and local support feed into each other. I doubt even Alabama sells 100,000 tickets at huge prices if they were playing in the MAC. Their fans may "hate" Ole Miss, LSU, and Auburn, but they love seeing their team play them.

That's why some amount of socialism within a conference is justified. But in the long run, i see more conferences, even the B1G and SEC, moving to tiered payment structures like the Big 12 has with Texas, that allocate a larger share to the bigger-time members.
