'Belt/WAC schools in contact with the Alliance... - OwlFamily - 03-13-2012 08:03 AM

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/brett-mcmurphy/17751380/wac-schools-others-interested-in-new-c-usamwc-league

It's still unknown what the new Conference USA/Mountain West league will look like – or will be called – when C-USA and the MWC dissolve and create their new league, but one thing is certain: there are a lot of schools interested in joining.

College football industry sources told CBSSports.com that as many as 11 schools, including each member of the Western Athletic Conference, have contacted either C-USA or the MWC or has been contacted about their interest in the new league.

The schools that have been in contact with either league are: Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio and Utah State from the WAC; Florida Atlantic, Florida International and North Texas from the Sun Belt; and Charlotte from the Atlantic 10.....[/u]

It seems a bit ambiguous because it does not differentiate between who reached out to C-USA/MWC and who was contacted by the conference. I'm sure there are many schools other than just the 11 mentioned who have contacted C-USA about joining but that may not mean much. I'd be interested to know which of them was contacted about possible membership by the conference. That would give us a much better idea about who is a serious candidate.

Either way, I'm just ready for the ball to start rolling already so we can see how this all shakes out.

I have no idea if the Alliance is going to be good/work out or not. I am happy that FAU is being proactive and at least discussing its options. Any AD/Administration that is not doing that is doing its program a crap job.

I agree. Got to look into it and see what is going on. We only know just a few details of what is going on from the press releases

Careful "pimping" schools over there, they'll ban you. 05-stirthepot

UAB fan would not be happy to be in the same conference with Hoover High, it is just another team they wouldn't be able to beat.

I would like to take FAU over FIU as well. I really like what I see in FAU.

I think the Sun Belt is a good quality conference that gets over looked. I don't make the rules, but it's obvious some of you will be coming to the alliance. I hope the following come to the alliance and in this order:

Middle Tennessee State (obviously good bball, good market, and helps travel for Marshall and ECU)

Western Kentucky (great bball, on the rise in football, new state for alliance)

FAU (new stadium, obvious recruiting in Florida, good market)

North Texas (not my first choice for selfish reasons aka, to far from Marshall for me., obvious choice b/c of facilities and market)

Ark. State (brings in a new state to the alliance, football is driving the expansion bus and you just hired a big time coach)

I would be happy with all 5 of the schools listed above. Or you guys constantly bring up CUSA East joining the Belt. The problem isn't with the schools listed above its some of the others. I wouldn't mind to see CUSA East split off with the teams above and form a new conference, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

So the 1-11 record and 3rd worst attendance in the belt impressed you that much?

They do have a beautiful stadium and are in a great location though

THAT is all that matters in these days of expansion. If product on the field was what mattered Troy would have been invited to a "better" conference a long time ago.

Don't forget that the seats are colored as well.

True, although if you guys were averaging 30k or so you'd have probably been invited to a "better" conference also, assuming you defined better as C-USA. A good product and good attendance got Marshall in as the only "small market" addition last time. Right now there aren't a lot of options out there averaging in that 30k range.

Nah, but we would like to have a Florida school and FAU>FIU.

Sure, you seem to be one of those fans that like teams that will not be a challenge. Stadium aesthetics are obviously important to you so i see where you are going with this.

Honestly, I think who ever from the SBC goes to the National Conference will benefit and grow tremendously.

I'll say this much, in defense of the applicants. For years, the SBC has fought the perception, of the entire country, that we wouldn't amount to much. Now, we have a much tighter grouping of institutions than the alliance will have and I see value in that. There are pros and cons that we could battle back and forth about, but I just don't believe the logistics of the whole thing will work.

Get over yourself, you act like FAU's entire program has always been what their football team was in 2011.

FAU bowls 2-0
FIU bowls 1-1
Head to head FAU 8-2

Without looking it up, I feel safe in assuming they probably hold at least a small advantage in basketball as well, at least in recent years anyhow.

Personally I think if one is taken by the Alliance, it's basically a coin flip and I think either would be just as likely to be successful in the Alliance as the other.

It's kind of funny that you think you guys have truly distinguishable programs to pretty much anyone outside of the Sun Belt or that either of you has a true advantage on the other, what's funnier is you're the one on the wrong end of the all time series and bowl records and FAU does have the nicer stadium and yet you're acting all indignant about someone saying they prefer FAU. Not saying you shouldn't stick up for your program, but don't act like he said he preferred Stetson over FIU, good grief.

LIE.

Your conference USA guys like to spin this statement so much. The truth of the matter is that playing in conference USA has not helped any of the teams who moved on it was just a door step conference.

SMU was very good in the past but was hit by harsh sanctions
Houston was very good in the past but was snubbed by politics
UCF was built in Orlando and that had nothing to do with conference USA
Memphis is Memphis and probably would have been making the tourney every year if they played in the SWAC.

Do you see the recurring fact here? The teams who are leaving were already established long before the Marshall's of the world joined. They were not "improved" by conference USA

I think that's wrong to say that C-USA didn't help those schools. Here's a question, how many programs that joined C-USA in the last expansion (Tulsa, Rice, Marshall, UCF, SMU, UTEP) are worse programs now than before they joined? The only one who you could say would be Marshall, and they had some probation and coaching issues. Tulsa, UCF, and SMU have grown leaps and bounds from where they were prior to joining, and Rice and UTEP have been better than they were historically. If 5 of the 6 are better for joining than they were previously C-USA must have done something right.
