School Alliance can least afford to lose - stever20 - 02-21-2012 11:37 AM

I was thinking about it. Is there a school out there that if they left, the alliance would be extremely unstable to a point of possibly not happening.

I think to me, that school may be Southern Miss. To me, if USM left, what would be really left in football? ECU who at best recently has been a fringe top 25 school. Tulsa same thing(though they've done better than ECU). The others aren't even close. And- if the Big East were to take BOTH of them- the alliance would be gone.

I don't think the Big East has a school like that. Sure, losing Louisville would hurt, but they would be replacable.

Big East already replaced UL with Memphis - same school for all intents and purposes. Once UL makes it official, the BE will take Air Force from the Alliance. That one will sting I would think.

Based on consistency across the board, USM hands down. They won the CUSA this year in football, are in 1st place in basketball, and I expect thatbaseball will be at or close to the top when the season is over. I don't agree that it would make the Alliance unstable much less extremely unstable though. Too many teams out there to fill in gaps regardless of whether a USM or ECU leave. The new conference still moves forward.

If you lose UL, you can kiss any hopes of a great TV deal bye bye.

I think if USM and ECU left- what would the eastern part of the alliance have? Marshall, UAB, Tulane, Rice, and Tulsa(putting UTEP out west). I think if that happened, Sun Belt would become a very viable force for schools such as UAB, Tulane, and even Rice. Marshall would be scurrying to the MAC most likely. That would leave only Tulsa- and they would likely be heading to the MWC.

Southern Miss and only them.

I'd say ECU. Without them you only have one team in the eastern time zone in Marshall. I wouldn't be shocked they ended up back in the mac if ECU is plucked up.

Big East would still have the basketball component even without Louisville. Football- what's going to get the tv contract is in some ways quanity over quality.

Nope, nope, nope. Let's say the BE took Tulane and Marshall instead of the USM and ECU. Would the rest run to the Sunbelt. Nope. UAB and Tulane might not have had the level of success as some other schools in CUSA, but they're still gonna look at the Sunbelt as a step down. So rather than take a step down, they'd rather other schools made the step UP. I.E. Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, Mid Tenn St, UTSA, Louisiana Tech, etc. Again, there are too many schools available for a CUSA or MWC team to backslide.

Air Force. Hands down the biggest draw and brand in the western conference as far as football is concerned.
