NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - exCincy Kid - 02-02-2012 11:23 AM

Interesting and this could still have an impact on MAC if Temple is in the mix for the BE. If it happens, it would be a real "punch to the gut" for C-USA (or the Alliance if you will) as it would take away their marquee hoops program.

Cool.

If Memphis leaves and C-USA stayed intact otherwise, they'd be back to a one NCAA bid league in hoops....I am not a fan of far-flung conferences, but with the MWC TV deal "going away", I guess there will be a continuing push for C-USA and MWC to merge into this Alliance "thing" to help their TV package and hoops profile.

RE: NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - Louis Kitton - 02-02-2012 11:44 AM

There are multiple reports on Memphis considered for the Big East as a last minute backfill for West Virginia heading to the Big XII.

West Virginia leaving the Big East leaves the conference with only 7 football playing members for 2012. Boise, SDSU, Houston, SMU, UCF all signed to come into the Big East for 2013 with the idea that WVU would be in the football conference for 2012.

Long term, having Memphis in the conference is another school the Big East could place in its western football division.

West: Boise, SDSU, Houston, SMU, Memphis
East: Louisville, Cincinnati, Rutgers, UConn, UCF, USF, Navy

Note that these divisions aren't balanced yet East-West even with Memphis and how they plan to ultimately do that is anybodies guess. They could pursue Temple and Army in the East and place UL/UC in the West to balance each division at 7.

Another rumor is that Louisville will soon be heading to the Big XII, reducing the eastern football schools to 6. Then Air Force can drop in as the 6th school out west once Navy arrives in 2015.

Louisville leaves and East to 6 teams. Southern Miss joins West to get to 6. Memphis-Southern Miss rivalry stays intact.

ECU and Temple if they want to get to 14.

Unfortunately the alliance looks to be on regardless of who else is leaving. Its not just Memphis that they have to be concerned with; Air Force maybe even UNLV. The Big East is going to continue to suck in programs.

The MWC-CUSA merger could set the stage for a future merger between the SBC-WAC football schools. The alliance takes in Utah State, WKU, MTSU, FIU and that would leave the WAC with 6 football members and the SBC with 7.

Alliance part deux

West: Idaho, SJSU, NMSU, UTSA, Texas St, UNT
East: La Tech, ULL, Ark State, USA, Troy, FAU

Is this really any different than the MWC-CUSA alliance?

What's a bit humorous is how those C-USA posters over there have continually hammered at Memphis fans over their jealousy on the Tiger's being the flagship hoops program of the conference while they have a crummy football program at the same time. I suspect now if Memphis does leave many posters over there will say "who cares" but this is a defection that really hurts C-USA's profile in hoops. It also further isolates Marshall and ECU geographically from the other schools in the league. (not that Memphis was all that close to Huntington and Greenville). And it makes perfect sense for the Big East as well.

Interesting on Southern Miss. They would help the Big East retain BCS points. The issue though is USM doesn't deliver significantly on the basketball side.

If the Memphis 2012 rumor is true....the BE will have the following members by year:

2012 8 members (Memphis In-WVU in)
2013 13 members (Boise, SDSU, UCF, Houston, SMU in)
2014 11 members (Pitt, Syracuse in)
2015 12 members (Navy in)

It would make sense then to have Air Force in for 2015 to balance divisions for 2013-2014. By 2015 Louisville may be out, reducing the total back to 12 in 2015....or they could be looking at 14 with BYU if Louisville stays.

The alliance was planning to move UTEP to the West to move to 9 football schools in the West and 8 football in the East. The East would then have to add 1 school.

Memphis departs and the East is now looking at adding 2 schools if they want to get back to that magic number of 18....that is unless Air Force leaves the West then maybe that magic number is 16.

It doesn't look like there will be a big difference between the MWC-CUSA-WAC-SBC moving forward. The MAC has an edge IMO with the ESPN TV deal.

Big 12 should be shooting for Memphis. Is Beebe still their comissioner? The fans hate him, and w/ good reason. He's been terrible.

Pretty Beebe is long gone.

The latest tweet has Boise State changing their start date to 2012 instead of adding in Memphis to the Big East on such short notice.

RE: NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - nert - 02-02-2012 05:18 PM

If they add Memphis for all sports, the Big East (9 all-sports core members, 12 FB members (3 FB-only), 17 olympic sports members) will be largely made up of former C-USA schools:

7/9 all-sports core members: Houston, SMU, Memphis, L'ville, Cincinnati, UCF, USF (Of the 9 all-sports schools, only UConn and Rutgers were never members of C-USA)

7/12 FB playing members: Houston, SMU, Memphis, L'ville, Cincinnati, UCF, USF (Of the 12 FB-playing members, only UConn, Rutgers, Navy, SDSU and BoiseSt were never members of C-USA)

9/17 olympic sports members: Houston, SMU, Memphis, L'ville, Cincinnati, UCF, USF, Marquette, DePaul (of the 17 olympic sports members, only UConn, Rutgers, NotreDame, Providence, StJohn's, SetonHall, Villanova and G'town were never C-USA members)

So how much did these (will these) 9 C-USA schools pay in entrance fees to re-join a conference they were already in?

RE: NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - nert - 02-02-2012 05:32 PM

As far as the alliance:

MWC Div (8): Hawaii (FB-only), FresnoSt, Nevada, UNLV, NewMexico, Wyoming, ColState, AirForce
C-USA Div (8): UTEP, Tulsa, Rice, Tulane, SoMiss, UAB, ECU, Marshall

at 16 schools, I don't see why they have to add anyone (unless they add a non-FB school to balance olympic sports schedules). Of course, at this point, I don't think they get any benefit from merging into one conference either (but the MWC would definately add at least one non-FB school if there was no merger).

The net talk is that both get out of bad TV contracts - but would this line-up get a much better one? There are really only 2 FB match-ups I would have any interest in watching as a non-league college sports fan: SoMiss-ECU and SoMiss-AirForce. Perhaps a FresnoSt-AirForce match-up would be a little intersting if both were having good seasons.

I'm not a big BB fan - but are there any possible interesting BB match-ups for a national audience?

Out of their home cities/markets - there is really not a lot of appeal left with these conferences - merged or not.

RE: NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - exCincy Kid - 02-02-2012 06:01 PM

Actually, Alliance merger helps hoops some, esp if Memphis bolts, as MWC has multiple NCAA bid prospects...without MWC, C-USA woud've been back to a one bid league again. There is just nothing cohesive about this new Alliance, though.

RE: NMR: Rumors of Big East eyeing Memphis. - BrianNowicki - 02-02-2012 06:33 PM

I thought the alliance was being talked about for football only. It won't help C-USA for basketball unless they take it a step further and just merge into one single conference for all sports.

It is going to be an Alliance for all sports.

If Memphis goes to the Big East, where will that leave Akron? Will Memphis take their spot or is a spot being held for Akron regardless?

Akron is being considered for the Big 12. Don't worry about Akron.
