Picking Wednesday's Winners - psc2009 - 01-25-2012 08:36 AM

It's looking like a pretty easy night for the MAC East. After watching Akron and Buffalo dismantle the "best of the West", TMD has the MAC East finishing up the sweep tonight.

Teams will have off-nights, but I wlill tell you that Toledo is improved. We're young and don't go deep but the players are more talented/athletic than many of the teams that Joplin put on the floor.

Miami is 1-5...

Toledo is improved but still the MAC West is a pretty big drop off from the East. Really a boat anchor on our RPI's

Two thoughts, even if the MAC west had better RPI's the MAC is only getting one team in the NCAA Tournament.

Second, some people say the same thing about the East for football. It is what it is.

They say it, but it is nowhere near the same comparison. The basketball disparity is far greater.

The MAC champion in football has come from the East four times in less than a decade. The last West champ in basketball was 2004. Going back to the when the football championship game started, the East has way more than held its own.

If you want to look at the whole division, the last time the West division in hoops had a winning record vs. the East was 2003. It was only a 3-4 seasons ago in football that the East beat the West over the whole season.

There is no doubt that the West is stronger in football top to bottom, but W-L percentages are a whole lot closer than the great disparity that has existed in basketball for quite a while.

Not entirely... if everyone's RPI was better, it would increase the conference's chance for a second bid.

The MAC has had some strong years more recently and still did not get a 2nd team in. I know what you are trying to say, but let's face it........if the MAC was a little stronger the balance of power would shift some and the East would not be quite as strong. Part of the problem would be that better teams in the West would beat some of the East teams, driving their RPI down some.

It's not the conference strength that keeps the MAC from getting more than one team in. There have been a few years where we've had at-large worthy teams but they keep winning in Cleveland.

It's difficult to make comparisons because not all the teams play each other in crossover games in football. Also, you only have one representative from each division playing for a championship in football. Frankly, 3 of 4 of those East football champions won in upsets after the West team's coach was hired away just prior to the game. There just doesn't seem to be much point in debating degree of dominance between the two divisions. These things wax and wain.

I wasn't really trying to start a debate. There are facts involved about which opinions are irrelevant: MAC East basketball wins a higher percentage of games and championships vs. the West than the West does vs. the East in football.

Opinions that don't coincide with facts are what are known as "wrong."

In football: The MAC West is like a 15 year old racing a 10 year old MAC East
In Hoops: The MAC East is like a 15 yo racing a 10 month old

I don't know. In football it seems that the MAC does a little better against top programs than it does in basketball.....for the most part. Now if you said in Hoops: The MAC East is like a 10 yo racing a 10 month old I might believe it a little more.
