Provo • Brigham Young University is on the verge of joining the Big East Conference as a football-only member — perhaps within the next day or two — The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed Tuesday morning that the conference and school could announce before the end of the week that BYU will be part of a proposed western division that also includes Boise State, Southern Methodist, Houston and, possibly, Air Force.

From the same newspaper, last week:

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/52863974-77/state-conference-utah-football.html.csp
Quote:The Salt Lake Tribune has learned that USU and San Jose State — which face each other Saturday in Logan — will likely be extended Mountain West invitations if Boise State and Air Force bolt for the Big East Conference.

USU officials have confirmed that the Aggies are in discussions with the MWC about a possible move.

So where are Boise and AFA moving their "other" sports?

The WAC may need them to survive.

There might not be a WAC after the MWC and CUSA backfill their losses.

Really weird that BYU and Air Force, two far west institutions both turned down the Big 12, up said yes to the Big East. Given their different reasons (competitiveness for Air Force, TV issues for BYU), it made sense, but still weird.

I think the Big12 is done. Even more so after reading those emails from Boren.

Compound that with the fact that the SEC will move to 16 teams spells it out.

It would be very naive to think the Big 12 is finish with realignment. Is this wishful thinking on your part?

Right. The WAC would be down to three schools that currently play FBS football: Idaho, New Mexico State, and Louisiana Tech. That Salt Lake article speculated that if the MWC loses a third team to the new Big East, the MWC would add Idaho. NMSU and La Tech would then only need to arrange to join the Sun Belt. There's no reason to keep the WAC going if it doesn't have enough teams to have an FBS football conference.

Word is that La Tech and New Mexico State could be headed to C-USA. So, that would leave WAC football with Idaho or possibly no one.

Does BYU want to keep their Olympic sports in the West Coast Conference ?? Seems with their BB program and 26 NCAA appearances that they would be a good all sports fit for the Big East ??

RE: Salt Lake Trib: BYU on verge of joining BE - Eagleweiser - 11-15-2011 06:09 PM

I think that is what Boise and BYU are pushing for, an all sports western division. BYU has quality basketball and Boise honestly has no place to put their other sports.

BYU does not want to be in for all sports due to their no Sundays requirements. If they wanted an all sports league they would have gone to the B12

RE: Salt Lake Trib: BYU on verge of joining BE - Bull - 11-15-2011 06:26 PM

I was thinking the same thing. Imagine that, not one but TWO teams turned down the B12 to join the BE.

Its a little unusual but I think there is some fear out there about BCS access within the BYU camp. This move by the Big East to bring into the conference an entire western division is an attractive one when compared with playing the role as the lone western outpost as they were looking at with the Big XII models.

Here is another theory......Maybe BYU was afraid that if they didn't accept a BE bid they might wind up hurt in the recruiting wars. A lot of mormon kids probably could accept Boise State as an acceptable alternative as the team to play for. The prospect of both Utah and Boise State out recruiting BYU because of BCS access has got to be worrisome.
