Mum's the word in the Ville - SmallVoice - 10-18-2011 04:45 PM

As you might imagine, Jurich was questioned intensely after today's BOT meeting. He didn't say much. His most important quote, I think, was, "Our focus right now is on the Big East. What we do, we'll keep private right now."

Howie Lindsey Wrote:"We'll have to be fluid," Jurich said. "We have to be fluid in anything that we do for this athletic department and this University. We will continue to be. You hear all the things that we hear. We have worked very hard over the last 14 years to build this into something special and we want to make sure that we prosper."

So what does fluid mean?

"That'll just have to play out," Jurich said. "We want to be the best we possibly can and enjoy the present that we have right now. The Big East has been very, very good for us and a very good home for us."

Minutes before Marinatto addressed the media via teleconference, University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was asked by reporters in Louisville if he expects to stay in the Big East.

“That’ll have to play out,” he replied after a meeting of the Uof L Athletic Association. “We want to be the best we possibly can and enjoy the present that we have right now. The Big East has been very, very good for us and a very good home for us.”

[...]

Asked if U of L has had discussions with the Big 12, Jurich said: “I think there is a lot of speculation out there right now. Our focus right now is on the Big East. What we do, we’ll keep private right now.”

[...]

Asked if he had received any assurances from U of L or West Virginia that they would remain in a new Big East, Marinatto reiterated that all 14 current conference members voted unanimously on a call late Monday in support of the 12 football team model as well as increasing the exit fee.

“I respect all the people that were on the call and the institutions at the table and I think that we’re dealing with all of them in good faith,” Marinatto said.

Can someone please email Marinatto and let him know that the exit fees were not raised.

Off topic, but LV and USF soccer game live on ESPNU right now... nice for all the out of state fans to check in.

in what form are you saying they weren't raised? My understanding was that they wre raised with a unanimous vote.

Technically nothing actually was done yet......they unanimously voted to raise the fee if someone joined.....yet they don't seem to be extending "official invitations".

Navy and AFA both came out later saying they are in no hurry to jump and want to see how everything plays out.

If Louisville or WVU leaves tomorrow....they would only have to pay $5 million.

RE: Mum's the word in the Ville - OhioBobcatJohn - 10-19-2011 01:59 AM

The conference should have raised exit fees to 20 million and put some heat on Louisville, WV, UC, UConn, USF and Rutgers to comit to the Big East. BE needs to make it harder financially on the core schools to just throw everything away that was built before they came.

They weren't. The only thing that "supposedly" happened was that there was an agreement to raise the exit fees if SMU & Houston joined.

The problem with that scenario is that SMU and Houston havent even been invited, because there arent the votes to invite them, therefore they cant join, therefore the exit fee cant be raised.

In other words, there was unanimous consent to vote on something that is impossible to occur under the situation as it stands. If anyone wants to bolt from the BE, their exit fee is still $5M.

You are wrong on this and you will find out soon Houston does have the votes to get in.

Well you're debating against the prevailing wind, UofM. If any team accepts then it triggers the increase.

Thanks for playing, come again... Hope UH is smart enough to include some type of clause in the BE contract so they can get out if the whole thing implodes without having to pay lots of $

"We've identified specific teams," Marinatto said. "If any one of those teams commits, the exit fee increases."

Pete Thamel, NY Times article from last night
Quote:The Big East has voted to increase its exit fee to $10 million from $5 million if Navy or Air Force joins.

Brett Mcmurphy, CBS sports (more reliable than the dailymail)
Quote:On Monday night, the Big East’s presidents and chancellors voted unanimously to increase the league’s exit fee to $10 million, but the increased fee is contingent on either Navy or Air Force joining the league as football only members, sources told CBSSports.com.

Lenn Robins, NY Post article from this morning
Quote:Two sources with direct knowledge of where the Big East stands, said that even if the league's expansion plan of bring in Air Force, Boise, Central Florida, Navy, Houston and SMU is executed, both Louisville and West Virginia still would leave for a spot in the Big 12.

@ Lenn Robins in NY Post

UofL/WVA can leave...and in the short term is a GREAT move. IF/When UT, TT, OU, and OSU leave the conference and you are left with ku, ksu, iowa state, tcu, and byu (maybe) then it's not so great at that point. I'd rather be in the revamped BE at that point....

RE: Mum's the word in the Ville - Bearcats#1 - 10-19-2011 07:30 AM

Really, if the Big East 6 would just stay put, and we add some teams...we will have KU, KSU, Iowa State, TCU, and Baylor knocking on our door once the big boys leave the B12 in a few years.

That horse already left the barn. Texas isn't going west, ever, so OU and OSU will stay in the Big 12 and make sure it's a 12 team league soon. That's the prevailing belief here in Oklahoma, the Big 12 will quickly get its championship game back, the premium teams need that 13th game to launch the winner into a possible national title game. Oklahoma State and Oklahoma realize that they are fortunate this year to probably have a quasi-conference title game between the two coming up on Thanksgiving weekend, but the chances of the two being 11-0 in any other year before their Bedlam game is probably 1000 to 1 odds or so.

This can happen at some other time perhaps; it will evolve. Always has always will. There will be a need to find that next gold nugget someday.

Which means that the exit fee isnt raised at this point. You guys can beleve me or not.

Also, why make it contigent upon another team joining the league? They already had an exit fee increase that was contingent. Why would they not simply raise the exit fee and be done with it??????

Because they dont have the votes for it, and some teams are stalling until they know something.

So lets vote to raise the fees, but make it contigent upon another team accepting an invite, except that no team has currently been invited, so no team can accept, and therefore the exit fees wont be raised.

Thats where the BE stands at this point. Unfortunately.

And about that 72 hour clock that supposedly started ticking last Friday....

The sad truth is that all you have to do is to raise the exit fees, and have the FB teams in the conference not act like they are having a wet dream to get out of the conference, and you could fix the conference.

RE: Mum's the word in the Ville - bitcruncher - 10-19-2011 10:39 AM

The exit fee increase doesn't kick in until the certain school(s) commit(s) to joining the conference. Until that happens, nothing else will. IMO that won't happen until all the dominos fall, and everyone knows who's left...

I agree with this. Quit worrying about what Missouri is going to do and resolve to stay in the Big East and make it work. Move forward with expansion.

I like the east-west division scenario with a championship game.
