I have not heard any chatter about this last signee. I wonder if we'll even sign a 13th scholarship player? The spring-signing period ends May 16th. After the official signing period, it is my understanding that a player can still commit to a school for the upcoming season, but he is not bound to that school until he enrolls in classes in the fall. Anthony Breeze, the oft-discussed 5th year transfer of last year's class, bolted for Bethune Cookman in early August after committing to us after the spring signing period.

I could see if we do sign someone it will be announced at the deadline. If there is no one worth taking, then hold on to that scholly but I really hope there is a big out there,we need it.

Like dabucs, I hope that there is a big out there available. A long defensive presence could be a big help against our major competition this year: Mercer, with a couple of 6’10” types in Daniel Coursey and Monty Brown.

Clearly Murry has a strong preference for athletic, 6’7” or 6’6” guys over unathletic 6’10” types. This is understandable. It is a lot easier for a midmajor to find 6’7” or 6’6” guys who will be productive than it is to find a 6’10” and up guy who can really play. A lot of 6’10” to 7’0” guys have gone through the ASun in our time here. I’d guess that 90% have been a waste of space.

But even such big guys as there are in the ASun have frequently been the downfall of Murry’s teams. Gardner-Webb with 6’10” Simon Cohn knocked us out of the tournament the first year. Then the Belmont teams of Boomer and Andrew Preston, and the Belmont teams of Hedgepeth and Saunders. Iona embarrassed us in the post in the CIT with 6’7” Mike Glover and his 6’8” partner. It would have been nice to see how 6’11” Seth Coy would have helped, especially against Belmont.

Mercer really sets up as a poor man’s Belmont this year. An excellent perimeter shooting team (returning average .363 from 3), a couple of talented guards in Langston Hall and Travis Smith, and a couple of bigs in the middle in rising juniors Brown and Coursey. Granted, they don’t have Belmont’s numbers. Hoffman favors a short rotation, like Murry. But they have the potential to whipsaw us between defending the post against the bigs, and defending the perimeter against a bevy of good outside shooters, much as Belmont did.

A long, defensive post presence would help us defend the basket without doubling down so much and exposing the perimeter.

This kid is so talented he's signed to play football in the SEC, South Carolina to be exact. He would've been a Jerald Fields-type player.

How about Dontrell Taylor? He was listed as ETSU having high interest. Is he gone, or is he currently a junior? He is listed as 6-9.

James Webb III has signed with Boise State.

I would suggest that ETSU will look similiar to some of the JU teams of years past. An athletic front line averaging 6-6 but with thicker/more physical guards than what JU has typically sported. It will be JU/ETSU/Upstate style vs FGC/Mercer this year.
