Volquez, Reds agree on one-year deal

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A signed deal has yet to be formally announced with Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez, but the two sides have come to terms on a one-year deal.

ESPN Deportes reported Saturday that the deal would likely be for $1.6 million to avoid arbitration. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty had originally hoped to sign Volquez to a multiyear contract -- like he had with several others this winter -- but he wasn't disappointed.

"We'll see if they're up for doing more later," Jocketty said Sunday from a Reds Caravan stop in Lexington. "We tried to do a multiyear deal. They just wanted to concentrate on the one year now. [Volquez's agent] had a few cases and wanted to get the arbitration thing out of the way."

Volquez returned from Tommy John surgery after the All-Star break in 2010 and went 4-3 with a 4.31 ERA in 62 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old was also charged with four runs on four hits and was pulled after 1 2/3 innings in Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Phillies.

The season also included a 50-game suspension when Volquez violated Major League Baseball's performance-enhancing drug policy. He served the suspension while he was rehabilitating on the disabled list but still lost $120,000 in salary.

There's no way he was going to agree to a longer deal. At least he has great incentive to perform at the highest level this year, then he'll be making good money the next go around.

Yeah, he was up and down after coming back last season. Let's hope he gets some consistency and some control back with a full, healthy season.
