[split] UCF - Sir Galahad - 12-26-2010 03:04 PM

How much of USF's endowments is connected to the Medical school, I'm betting 75%. UCF's medical school now in its second year will start creating a much larger endowment for UCF. To compare UCF to any school with a seasoned medical school is simply not comparing apples to apples. Come back in five years and post those numbers again, I'm willing to bet it will look totally different.

So far over $385 million has been raised, $89 million for the medical school. So as you can see USF does quite well fundraising and not just because of its Medical school.

Very nice, the UCF Foundation raised over $250,000,000 in five years back in 2005 which paid for the UCF Medical school, football stadium and basketball arena. The UCF Medical school alone has raised over $100,000,000 in just two years. Who do you think owns that 50 acres of land that the UCF Medical school, new VA hospital, Nemours Children's Hospital and the Burnham Institute of Medical Research. That would be the UCF Foundation who also owns all the athletic facilities on UCF. UCF has spent the money raised by its foundation which is why UCF looks like it does. Maybe USF should start spending their millions now.

I guess when there is a list of 18 schools and yours is 2nd from the bottom (though i guess if ECU fans' numbers are right, you are at the bottom) you feel like the list is an attack on you. This thread wasnt made to insult UCF fans, just to point out some more information about some schools that may end up in our conference.

Maybe you should stop worrying about attacking USF and instead compare yourself to schools on your level, like FIU.

Because while the numbers are correct it is useless information. That is a snapshot of what the Foundations currently have in their "bank." Endowments are either restricted or not restricted. The UCF Foundation has spent over $300,000,000 in just the past five years on things like a Medical School, Football Stadium, Basketball Arena, $25,000,000 just spent on a new performing arts building. UCF just broke ground on a $50,000,000 housing project that will 670 beds and 208,000 square feet of additional buildings.

Tell me where do you think that money comes from. It comes from the UCF Foundation that if it did not spend that money would be in something called an endowment. So you can have a campus that looks like UCF where it is obvious they spent the money or you can have the alternative.

Needless attacks in this thread. Who would've thought something as stupid as endowments (which couldn't have less to do with BE expansion) could be incendiary.

Many attributes correlate with AQ status. For example, all public AAU FBS members except Buffalo is in an AQ conference. It's so key that UConn and USF have said they are gunning for future AAU invites. The average endowment of all AQ FBS members is >$1 Bil. Endowment points to overall institutional resources and excellence. Since we've had only 5 FBS members officially receive AQ invitations recently, their endowments at the time of their invites were:

2010
TCU - $975 Mil
Utah - $513 Mil

2005
Cincinnati - $1.032 Bil
Louisville - $607 Mil
South Florida - $298 Mil

Also, is it correct that UCF is using endowment money for campus improvements? Schools like Buffalo, UConn, and Temple each have >$1B in ongoing campus improvement projects that are funded by the state and/or smaller, direct private giving. No endowment money is being touched.
There are many things that correlate with AQ status. I would venture to guess that 80-90% of AQ schools are older than 100 years. I would also venture to guess that around 2/3 of AQ schools are state funded institutions. Neither of which has much bearing on whether or not the BE would extend an invite. It's about money; not the money that the college has, the money that the BE is going to make.

I don't understand the connection being made in this thread. Rice has a $3.5 billion endowment and are shockingly absent from all talks about expansion. Why aren't they in the SEC considering they have more money than every other member?

The BE doesn't care that you have a bunch of money unless you intend to use it in a way that helps them. Houston is showing that it cares about athletics with it's fund-raising efforts and plans for new athletics facilities. UCF just finished it's new athletic facilities. ECU is currently upgrading it's facilities as well. There is a reason these schools are being discussed and it has nothing to with how well endowed they are.

WOW, I think SAD has found his counterpart at USF. This is an impressive job of stealth trolling. Given your post history I would say this thread was absolutely about UCF. In fact it's not all that unsimilar from this thread where you take another veiled shot at UCF.

Im not sure there was anything stealth about that other thread. That one was a clear shot at UCF. This one, not so much. Trust me, its not all about you.

Just trying to put some information out there. Everyone is prisoner of the moment to you guys being ranked in football and basketball now (for the first time ever in each) and they forget how little your school actually brings to the table.

I want big east expansion to improve my conference, i dont consider you guys to be a good candidate, therefore when the subject of expansion is up, i make points that show why.

When was the last time USF finished OOC basketball play ranked? When was the last time USF basketball was ranked?

How does averaging 22k in actual football attendance help the Big East?

How does USF help the Big East in a way that UCF wouldn't.

What marque BCS wins did USF have before joining the Big East.

Why does UCF continue to travel better than USF to bowl games? (Hint: could it be that our fan base has been around three time longer than USFs and our core fan base is larger?)

Why our are athelic budgets the same when you can sell your program as a "Big Time" BCS program?

Seriously it's like the guy on a team who rides the bench in the majors telling a guy who's hitting it our of the park in the minors that their not good enough to be brought up...

Good pts...as UCF just built the first free standing College of Medicine campus over the last 30-40 years....something that no one would have believed even possible just 6-7 years ago.

Also the poster above notes well established Univ...like Univ of Buffalo (est 1846), UCONN (est 1881), and Temple (est 1884), which is almost silly to try and compare them to UCF, which wasn't est till 1863 and didn't open their doors till Oct 1968.

Heck, UCF use to receive so little $$$ from the state that until 10 years ago or so, most of the student parking at UCF was in sand parking lots.

There hasn't been many schools in the country that has been able to build up a quality Univ (including a brand new Medical College campus) as fast and as big as UCF....as it would be great if UCF could just focus on raising endowment $$$$$ but now, virtually every $$$ brought in has to be spent at this point in time (i.e. to basically BUILD the Univ from scratch...which is being done right now).

Good stuff Beast 04-cheers

Our paid attendance was higher than yours this year, which is the only number reported for NCAA purposes. You guys keep holding us to a newspaper article about actual attendance, a number that isnt tracked officially anywhere. No one reports the amount in seats, you guys just like throwing that around because it makes you feel better about your program i guess. Prior to this down year, we were over 50k for 3 straight years, and looking at our home schedule this coming year, i expect us to be back over 50k again this year. But cool, enjoy mocking us for being in the low 40s this past year... if you mess around with numbers, its sorta not as good as your high 30s, despite you having the best season in your schools history.

Finished OOC Basketball ranked? Man you are really stretching for categories right now.

We beat Pittsburgh prior to joining the big east and a ranked Bowling Green team. Granted it was just bowling green, but that was one of our first seasons in FBS.

It does suck being on the bench though, like you said. Would be cool if we were the fastest team in NCAA history to be ranked, ranked in the top 10, or ranked in the top 5. Or had beaten ranked Auburn, ranked FSU, top 10 ranked Louisville, top 10 ranked West Virginia, Miami, etc. Sucks that we are stuck here on the bench while UCF soars above us.

Not sure how this thread became about USF or anything other than endowments. I guess when you have no solid ground to argue on based on the topic you have to just attack completely unrelated things of another school, who wasnt part of the discussion, in order to feel better about yourself. Cool dude.

So anyways.. lets get this back to endowments.

Is the old story line, USF's endownment is not anywhere near 75% from its medical school. So stop making excuses about your school's and putting excuses about USF. Last checked both FAU and FIU are younger schools than UCF dont have a medical school and both have larger endownments

Do you have any documentation of where USF's endowment comes from?

RE: [split] UCF - kardphan - 12-30-2010 02:28 PM

I almost spilled my coffee. Are you guys really arguing basketball accomplishments? If USF was in any other conference last year they would have been ranked. Being ranked is nice buts for the schools in this conference making it to the final 4 and beyond is the goal. Nobody hangs banners for being ranked. These pissing matches are just getting weak. It went from endowment smack to basketball smack.
