Athletic UAB quarterback presents challenge for Troy

By Drew Champlin
Published: September 17, 2010

UAB enters today’s 3 p.m. home game with Troy at 0-2, but the Blazers will give the Trojans (1-1) a new look on offense.

Troy saw pocket passers against Bowling Green and Oklahoma State to start the season. UAB quarterback David Isabelle has followed in Joe Webb’s footsteps in taking the offense into his hands, as the senior has run for 248 yards and three scores in two games — good for 13th nationally.

But Isabelle has hit just 16-of-34 passes for 188 yards. Troy quarterback Corey Robinson (53-of-76, 524 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions) has topped 188 yards in both games, but he’s not the runner Isabelle is.

UAB's Hail Mary beats Troy

By Drew Champlin | dchamplin@dothaneagle.com

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Troy players and coaches will say that the touchdown to beat the Trojans at the end of the game shouldn’t have counted.

They’ll also say that it never should have gotten to that point.

But UAB went 99 yards in just nine plays with 1:09 left, ending when Jackie Williams caught a 44-yard hail mary pass from Bryan Ellis at the goal line as time expired. Josh Zahn’s extra point gave UAB an improbable 34-33 win over the Trojans at Legion Field.

Troy (1-2) led 23-0 midway through the second quarter, but it all fell apart after UAB (1-2) inserted Ellis, its backup quarterback.

Robinson tops 400-yard mark
It took Troy redshirt freshman quarterback Corey Robinson just three games to eclipse the 400-yard mark.

Robinson hit 26-of-44 passes for 404 yards, improving his pass yardage total in each game.

He threw two touchdowns — one a 79-yarder to Chip Reeves and a 15-yarder to Jason Bruce, and didn’t throw an interception. He took three sacks.

The 404 yards is the fifth best in Troy history by a Trojan quarterback.

The hits for Troy’s football team keep coming after a heartbreaking 34-33 loss at UAB on Saturday.

Memories Of 2006 Revisit Trojans Saturday Afternoon
Last time the Trojans visited Birmingham, good things happened at end of season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ninety-nine yards separated UAB from the goal-line trailing Troy by six on Saturday. The Blazers accomplished the yardage and the game-winning score, while burning out the final 69 seconds in the game.
Troy left Legion Field in heartbreak fashion after a 44-yard UAB touchdown pass to end the game sank an opportunity for victory.

The Trojans previous trip to Legion Field ended in a loss too, as the 2006 Troy football team fell 21-3 to UAB, capping off a four-game losing skid. That Troy team responded though, and the response was with a Sun Belt Championship and the school’s first ever bowl victory.

Troy notebook: Rowell trying to find solutions for Troy defense

By Drew Champlin
Published: September 20, 2010

TROY — Troy defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell thought he could rest easier as young son Jacob started to grow past the infant stage of crying at odd hours of the night.
Now almost 3 years old, Jacob sleeps throughout the night. Jeremy, though, has other issues on his mind.

Like how the Trojans’ defense has given up 41 and 34 points in the past two games and is ranked 109th nationally (462 yards per game) in total defense and sixth in the Sun Belt.

“I’ve slept better during a season, I can promise you that,” said Rowell, whose Trojans host Arkansas State Saturday at 2:30 p.m. It’s the first Sun Belt game for Troy (1-2), while ASU (1-2, 1-1 SBC) has played two league games, falling on the road to UL-Lafayette but beating UL-Monroe last weekend.

TROY FOOTBALL: Trojans struggle to correct problems

By Tim Gayle • September 21, 2010

TROY -- The statistics are some of the worst in America.

Troy entered the 2010 season with high hopes of winning a fifth consecutive Sun Belt Conference championship but will open conference play this weekend with a defense that is surrendering an average of 34 points and 462 yards per game.

Those aren't numbers that can win a championship.
"You won't be able to win any games," Troy defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi said. "That just goes back to effort. Was our scheme executed? Did we follow the plan? And it isn't just the players. Sometimes, it's the individuals teaching the players. It's all about a team effort. Everybody has a little evaluating to do this weekend."

Troy's Swindall gets his chance

By Drew Champlin
Published: September 21, 2010

TROY — Zach Swindall’s chance for meaningful playing time finally came Saturday, after the former walk-on paid his dues and bided his time for more than three years.

Swindall, who graduated from Charles Henderson, played the entire second half at center for Troy in its 34-33 loss at UAB last week. The redshirt junior will continue that battle this week as the Trojans (1-2) prepare to host Arkansas State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Swindall took over after left guard Jacob Creech reinjured his shoulder against the Blazers. Starting center Tyler Clark moved to left guard.

“You hate to see somebody get hurt, but when they go down it’s an opportunity for me to step up and show that I can play and be a contributor,” Swindall said.

The Troy Trojans football team is not thrilled about a 1-2 start to this season, and they hope to make that evident to the Trojan fan base Saturday when Arkansas State rolls into town for the 2010 Sun Belt Conference opener.

The game has been designated as “Cardinal Craze” day at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. The game is being televised on the Sun Belt Network (CSS/Cox Sports Television) as the conference game of the week.

The players emotions were evident on Monday after consecutive hard-to-swallow road losses. The “Drive for Five” aside, the Trojans just need to win, and hopes are that victory will come before a packed house of cardinal clad fans as well as a television audience.

Troy's Madden knows Arkansas St. offensive coordinator well

By Drew Champlin
Published: September 22, 2010

TROY — LaDarrius Madden was supposed to redshirt this year.

Now, he’s in the line of fire, and he’ll get a chance to face the offense of his old coach when his Troy team hosts Arkansas State Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Arkansas State’s offensive coordinator is Hugh Freeze, who is in his first year with the Red Wolves. Freeze was Madden’s head coach at Lambuth University, an NAIA school in Jackson, Tenn., during the 2008 season.

“He’s a pretty cool guy,” Madden said. “He’s all right. He really cares about his players.”

Madden, listed as a backup safety, got his first extensive playing time in the second half of last week’s 34-33 loss at UAB when starter Willard Ross got hurt.
