TROY, Ala. – Central Michigan rode a six-run first inning to a 14-7 victory over Troy in the series finale Sunday at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans won the series after taking the first two games of what was originally scheduled as a four-game set but was shortened to three games due to rain.

The Chippewas jumped out to a 7-0 lead after their first two at-bats of the game. Nate Theunissen opened the scoring with a two-run single after back-to-back singles and a Troy error loaded the bases to open the game. A grounder and wild pitch allowed two more runs to score and Eric Wrozek capped the opening frame with a two-run double to left.

TROY, Ala. – A pair of NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago will meet in a pivotal non-conference series this weekend as Troy travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., for three games against No. 28 Southern Mississippi at Pete Taylor Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Troy (2-1) enters the series after taking two-of-three games from Central Michigan last weekend. Southern Mississippi (2-2) took two-of-three from Nicholls State at home last weekend and dropped a 2-1 decision at ULM Wednesday night.

All-American Tyler Ray (1-0, 1.50) will get the Friday night start for the Trojans. The senior right-hander enters the weekend having won an NCAA best 13 straight decisions. Ray also leads all active pitchers in the NCAA with 28 career victories and ranks 14th with 192 career strikeouts – Ray struck out eight in six innings in the opener last week and allowed just two hits and one earned run.

The Troy pitching staff struck out 37 batters over the opening weekend which was tops in the country among teams that played three games and the best per-game average (12.3) of any team in the NCAA.
Five Trojan pitchers combined to strike out 16 batters in game two of the series with the Chippewas, it was just one strikeout behind the single-game school record set in 1961 and 2003.

Southern Mississippi will counter with senior right-hander Chase Horn (0-1, 5.79) in the opener Friday night. Horn will be looking to bounce back from a rough start against Nicholls State in which he allowed four runs – three earned – on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work.

MIAMI, Fla. – The Troy men's basketball team played its second straight overtime game but came out on the winning end this time with a 75-70 win at FIU on Thursday night.

Troy (9-17, 4-11) withstood a slow start to take a lead before halftime and picked up its defense in the overtime period, allowing FIU (7-20, 4-11) just three points in the extra frame.

“We controlled the overtime period,” said head coach Don Maestri. “The more we felt we were in control on offense, the harder we played on defense. We got some big rebounds in overtime and didn't allow them any second chance opportunities.

In the game, the Panthers outrebounded the Trojans, 36-31, but Troy held a 13-10 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Trojans kept the Panthers winless at home in conference play this season in what was the third overtime game in the last four meetings between Troy and FIU.

The story of the night was opportunistic defense as the Trojans forced 19 Panther turnovers which helped the Trojans go to the free throw line 24 times compared to FIU's 11 trips to the charity stripe. Troy converted on 17-of-24 (70.8 percent), including 3-of-4 in overtime.

On Friday night at Troy's Riddle-Pace Field there is one certainty ... Tyler Ray will be pitching for the Trojans and the odds are highly stacked in his favor that the home team will come away with a victory.

The reigning Sun Belt Conference pitcher of the year improved his record at home to 18-3 after shutting down Central Michigan for six innings in the 2012 season opener this past Friday. Ray allowed just two hits and one earned run to extend his NCAA leading win streak to 13 games.

"Every baseball player would be lying to you if tells you he didn't look at his stats," Ray said. "I look at a box score after games, but as far as where I stand when it comes to other players I don't really know."

HATTIESBURG, Miss.
Tyler Ray and Nate Hill combined for a six-hit shutout as Troy defeated No. 28 Southern Miss 3-0 Friday night at Pete Taylor Park in non-conference action.

Ray (2-0) struck out three and didn't allow a walk over seven innings of six-hit baseball. The win was the 29th of his career and his 14th straight without a loss – both best among active players in the NCAA. Hill did not allow a hit and struck out two over his two innings of work out of the bullpen to pick up his first save of the season.

“We got what we get from Tyler Ray, another good performance,” Troy head coach Bobby Pierce said. “He got a little tired around the 80-85 pitch count which is normal for this time of year. Both he and Nate (Hill) pitched great. You don't get a shutout very often in college baseball. Offensively, I thought we had a few great chances to bust the game open, but just couldn't get that hit. Any time you can come into Hattiesburg and get a Friday night win against Southern Miss it's a great night.”

No. 28 Southern Miss Nips Troy 2-1 to Even Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 28 Southern Miss held off a late Troy charge to defeat the Trojans 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park and even the three-game non-conference series at one game each.

The Trojans (3-2) had a run taken off the board in the seventh inning following a lengthy discussion by the umpires. Jakob Nixon led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Ali Knowles. Josh McDorman then lined a single into right-center field and the Southern Miss shortstop sailed the cutoff throw trying to throw out Knowles at third.

The umpires initially ruled that Knowles was allowed to score from third and McDorman was to advance to third as the ball went out of play. However, the umpires reversed their decision and put Knowles at third and McDorman at second. It appeared that if play had not been called dead, Knowles would have scored and McDorman would have advanced to third.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Troy men's basketball team overcame a 19-point halftime deficit to defeat Florida Atlantic on the road on Saturday night, 83-82, in the regular season finale for both teams. The win marked the second straight for Troy as they enter next week's conference tournament.

Troy (10-17, 5-11) finished the game on an 16-2 run over the last 4:46 including the last six from Will Weathers who finished with a season-high 28, including 26 in a dominate second half performance.

Florida Atlantic (11-18, 8-8) led by as many as 19 points thanks to a 12-0 run to open the second half, but the Trojans never seemed out of it. Troy slowly chipped away and culminated the comeback with some clutch free throws in the final minute.

“This was a big win to help build momentum heading into Hot Springs,” said head coach Don Maestri.

Sunday notes: Alan Jones heating up for Troy

[Image: Western+Kentucky+Troy_Cham%25281%2529.jpg]

Troy's solid play to finish off the season has been sparked by one of its smallest players.

Alan Jones, a sharpshooter at 5-foot-9 (listed at 3 inches taller), who has incredible hops, has found his consistency and helped Troy finish the season with a 10-17 overall record, 5-11 in league play. That's not the ideal record, but Troy's playing much better now than it was 2 months ago, and most of this team returns to open the new Trojan Arena.

Jones hit 7-of-11 shots, 2-of-4 from 3-point range, as Troy beat FAU 83-82 on Saturday. He's scored in double figures in 4 of the past 5 games. In those 4 games, Troy is 3-1 with the 1 loss being an OT loss to the Sun Belt West champion UALR. Jones is averaging 15 points per game in that 5-game stretch to get his scoring average into double digits.

A few games ago, I said Troy needed a good 2-guard to step up, either on his roster or in recruiting, for next year. It's looking like that will be Jones, who can create his own shot and is quick to the rim. He won't get it over the taller guys real close to the basket, but has some nice high arc on his floaters. He had a few games where he missed a lot of shots, but either he's on fire or he's taking better shots. My guess is the latter.
