Trojans Hang with Razorbacks in 38-28 Defeat

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Trojans made it close in the second half, but a 24-point, first half outburst was enough to carry No.14 Arkansas past Troy, 38-28 at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium on Saturday night.

Troy outscored the Razorbacks, 21-14 in the second half and used three turnovers to keep it close. The Trojans (0-2) outgained the Razorbacks, 457-454 on the night, but were outrushed, 151-84.

Corey Robinson finished with 373 passing yards on a career-high 36 completions with another career-high 63 attempts. The sophomore signal caller threw three touchdowns and one interception. Corey Johnson was Robinson's top target as he caught eight balls for 59 yards. Stanley Arukwe posted a team-high 84 receiving yards.

The Trojans would close the gap to within 10 in the third quarter and they seemed primed to climb back into the game. After surrendering a 79-yard touchdown drive to the Razorbacks (3-0) on their first possession of the third, the Troy defense would settle down, score a touchdown and force two three-and-outs.

GAMEDAY: Middle Tenn. at Troy

This has been my favorite Sun Belt game to cover each year. It always seems like there's a lot on the line, something strange has happened or it's on ESPN.

2005 - MTSU coach Andy McCollum has been fired, so he's coaching his final 2 games. Troy has 7 players suspended for curfew violations, including the starting QB. Trojans get 1st and goal at the 1, probably get in on 2nd and 3rd down, but no replay cameras on the goal line at that time. MTSU wins 17-7 as the Carl Meadows era at QB mercifully comes to an end (for what it's worth, I was always pulling for Carl to succeed. Stand-up guy, just not in a good situation).

2006 - Easily the most memorable game I've covered on this beat. MTSU gets a couple of trick plays to score some touchdowns. Both teams kick a couple of field goals. Troy can't get anything going. Omar Haugabook is stopped on 4th and goal at the 1. Play of the game you don't remember is Brannon Condren's open field tackle of a MTSU running back on third down, forcing a punt. Troy scores a quick TD, recovers the onside kick, converts a 4th and 17, then scores again. Troy wins 21-20, then beats FIU for the first of its five straight outright or shared titles.

It only takes a mention of the name to get the Troy Trojans to get a sparkle in their eyes.

Middle Tennessee. Just the thought of the Blue Raiders and the rivalry that has developed over the years in the annual “Battle for the Palladium” gets the Trojans excited.

The two teams, who are both still in search of their first victory in 2011, will renew that rivalry on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game is being televised on CSS and Cox Sports TV, as well as online on ESPN3.com.

For the Trojans, the game will be even more special this year. In addition to being the home-opener, it will be the first time Troy will play on Larry Blakeney Field. The naming of the playing surface was announced in April, and the official dedication of the field naming will be held just prior to kickoff.

After years of running track, Troy's Arukwe walks on at football

TROY -- Stanley Arukwe is in unusual class attire for a Troy football player.

The receiver with good numbers who has inspired offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield to gushing praise, and who has impressed his teammates since before the start of preseason workouts, doesn't even have a Troy football shirt.

A Troy track and field shirt doesn't have the same panache.

"I'm a walk-on, so I don't have any gear yet," Arukwe said.

Arukwe already has achieved some Troy athletic glory with two years on the school's track and field team.

He was out of eligibility this spring, which cleared his way to return to football. The Trojans had a need after several receivers were academically ineligible. Arukwe filled it.

Trojans Grab Palladium, Again

TROY, Ala. – The Troy Trojans continued their recent dominance of Middle Tennessee on Saturday as the Trojans defeated the Blue Raiders, 38-35, to capture their sixth straight victory in the “Battle for the Palladium.”

Troy (1-2, 1-0) did so in front of 20,185 fans at the newly dedicated Larry Blakeney Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win moved the Troy head coach to 21-0 at home openers and 90-12-1 in Troy.

“It's great to get a win, it's great to get a conference win,” Blakeney said. “Even though we try to prepare to win every week, and I think it's obvious in those first two games our kids had been prepared to try to win. We didn't quite get it done but we were able to 'eek' it out tonight. I'm proud to be sitting here with a 1-0 conference slate heading into next week against UAB.”

Troy freshman receiver Chandler Worthy making immediate impact

TROYChandler Worthy, Troy’s baby-faced freshman receiver, had to do something before he arrived on campus this summer to make him appear older.

So he grew a mustache, or tried to, but he admitted it looked funny on him.

“I had to do something,” Worthy said. “I’ve got to say, the ladies don’t like the guys who look like they’re 13 years old. They’ll like the baby face one day.”

Troy defense getting burned by big plays

By: Drew Champlin
Published: September 27, 2011

TROY – Troy’s defense was put to the test against nationally-ranked Clemson and Arkansas to open the season, but the unit took a step back in a 38-35 win over Middle Tennessee.

MTSU, which is led offensively by a veteran group of skill players and linemen, put up 582 yards of total offense, including a career-high 415 and five touchdowns from quarterback Logan Kilgore.

At 501 yards per game, Troy’s defense is ranked 114 th out of 120 teams. The positive is that there are nine more regular season games to improve, starting with Saturday’s 6 p.m. home game against UAB.

But right now, there are still questions on why the Trojans continue to give up the big plays. All five of MTSU’s touchdowns covered 30 yards or more.

Trojans still haunted by UAB's Hail Mary

TROY -- Troy defensive back Chris Pickett vividly remembers pleading his case. Safety LaDarrius Madden still sees it in his mind.

Quarterback Corey Robinson refuses to even ponder it again. Offensive lineman Kyle Wilborn still relives simply walking off the field.

With the Trojans (1-2) set to host UAB (0-3) on Saturday, they still feel the pain of how they lost to the Blazers last year.

On the final play of the game. On a Hail Mary. On a play they still feel they stopped at the 1.

"I saw the pictures or whatever where he was sitting down and came up short, but the officials made the call," Madden said.

"There are some things you can't change."

Troy 24, UAB 23: Trojans defense comes through

TROY -- Jimmie Anderson had a sense of deja vu.

With Saturday's game having an eerie sense of last year's between Troy and UAB, Anderson was easily reminded of how it ended.

UAB threw a last-play Hail Mary to cap a 99-yard drive. Anderson was a primary defender on the touchdown, which led to a one-point win for the Blazers.

On Saturday, the ending wasn't the same.

The final play ended at midfield and Troy marched off to celebrate a 24-23 victory at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Troy and UL-Lafayette have coaching connections

By: Drew Champlin
Published: October 06, 2011

TROY – Troy offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield will be matching wits with close friends on the UL-Lafayette coaching staff when the Trojans and Ragin’ Cajuns meet Saturday at 6 p.m.

Edenfield coached under current ULL head coach Mark Hudspeth for six years at North Alabama and played at Troy with ULL defensive coordinator Greg Stewart. Edenfield’s family and Stewart’s family still vacation together in Panama City.

Between the lines on Saturday at Cajun Field, it’ll hardly be a vacation.
