CLEMSON — We’re two and a half months from kickoff of Clemson’s 2011 season, and what better way to get a look at what faces the Tigers this fall then to go to the source – the writers who cover their opponents?

We start today in a natural spot – with Troy, the Sept. 3 season opener. Drew Champlin has covered the Trojans for the Dothan (Ala.) Eagle since 2005, making him an excellent source of information. You can read his Troy blog at dothaneagletroy.blogspot.com.

HERE
is the football story I wrote today, mostly on the WRs but also on the Troy coaches having a youth camp in Dothan.

I get the feeling this will get moved around a bit during fall camp, but here's a look at the WR positions heading in. This is really in no particular order.

A pair of Troy players continue to see All-America honors roll in – this time as Rawlings/ABCA All-America selections.

Third baseman Tyler Hannah (Gardendale, Ala.) and right-hander Tyler Ray (Hoover, Ala.) were both selected as third team All-Americans by Rawlings and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) late last week.

Hannah and Ray are the only two players from both the Sun Belt Conference and the state of Alabama to be included on the teams.

Troy recruiting update

Troy now has its second commitment of the 2012 recruiting class (as far as I know).

Fitzgerald, Ga. safety JaQuadrian Lewis recently committed to Troy. The Trojans' first commit was a big one in terms of rankings on rivals.com 3-star cornerback Shaquille Beverly of Jacksonville (First Coast) Fla.

Since breaking ground on March 3, Whaley Construction Company, Inc., of Troy, has completed about 50 percent of the new $31 million Trojan Arena. The completed building will cover approximately 141,000 square feet.

"We have been working hard to make a lot of progress, even with the rain," Charles Ingram, Project Manager for Whaley Construction, said. "We have men working from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and some men working on Saturdays until noon."

The new arena is projected to be finished by the Fall semester of 2012 and, according to Ingram, the project is on schedule.

For the second time this week, Troy University standout defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi has been named to a preseason “Watch List” for one of the top college football awards.

After earning a nod to the Bednarik Award list earlier in the week, Massaquoi was one of 87 players named to the Bronko Nagurski list on Friday. Once again, he was the only player from the Sun Belt Conference to be included on the list.

The Rotary Lombardi Award Committee has released the Official Watch List for the 2011 Rotary Lombardi Award. This is the 42nd year that the Rotary Lombardi Award has named the nation's college lineman of the year.

Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense of defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, and linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. All candidates also must be eligible to play college sports under the rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Trojan leader prepares for big role
Corey Robinson to take on more leadership this season

TROY – Corey Robinson’s role has shifted from competitor to leader this summer.

A year ago, Robinson, a rising sophomore quarterback for Troy, was in a quarterback competition to start for the Trojans. He won that, and now he’s looking to build on a season where he was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year as the Trojans went 8-5.

This summer, he’s leading players-only workouts and spending extra time in the film room to correct his freshman mistakes. So far, so good, as the Trojans prepare for the 2011 season. Practice begins on Aug. 4.

Troy University sophomore quarterback Corey Robinson had a remarkable first season running the Trojans' high-powered offense in 2010.

After winning Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year honors as well as MVP honors at the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, more is expected of the Troy signal caller in 2011. Those expectations have landed him on the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list for the coming season.

This year's list, which was compiled by a subset of The O'Brien National Selection Committee, features 38 of the nation's top collegiate quarterbacks who were selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2011 college football season. Robinson was the only quarterback from a Sun Belt Conference program named to the list.

In addition to his other awards last year, Robinson was recognized as one of the top 12 players to watch for 2011 by the Columbus (Ohio) Touchdown Club at their annual awards banquet.

He ranked in the top 10 in the nation in 2010, and first among all freshmen, in completions per game (24.69), yards per game (286.62) and total passing yards (3,726). He also ranked 22nd in the nation in total offense per game (278.92), 30th in TD responsible for (12.92 points per game) and 38th in passing efficiency (137.90).
