Mike Newell to ULM? - mjs - 04-15-2010 05:19 PM

Jeff says he will make a strong push for the job and has a connection there. It could be good deal for ULM. He'd probably be willing the pay THEM to get out of Monticello. Don't think it will happen, but I bet he would bring a good crowd out to the Stephens Center when ULM comes to town.

I'd love to see him get a chance to coach at the D1 level again. Hope he gets the job.04-cheers

I really can't imagine it happening unless his "connection" has a lot of influence at ULM. Can't imagine their fans would be really happy bringing in a 60 year old coach from a DII school. I guess stranger things have happened.

RE: Mike Newell to ULM? - eh9198 - 04-15-2010 07:21 PM

I really hope it happens. If it happens anywhere, it'll happen there, where ULM has very little money to pay for more than an 60 year old DII coach.

I really, really hope it happens.

I was only half joking that Newell would pay ULM to get out of Monticello. If he makes $60,000 at UAM (that may be a stretch), he'd go to ULM for $75,000 in a heart beat.

In all seriousness, ULM will likely try to hire LSU assistant and former LaTech coach Keith Richard. He's a former ULM player and assistant coach. Can they pay him enough? I don't know.

Both the Monroe paper and an "in the know" blogger have mentioned Mike Newell as being in the mix for the ULM job. No surprise that he wants the job. Surprise would be if he gets it.

MJS - are you in the "Coach Newell's a Bum" camp..?

RE: Mike Newell to ULM? - hb8 - 04-16-2010 12:14 PM

While it is hard to have an opinion on someone's chances without knowing what the alternatives are, some of the hurdles Mike would have to overcome would be his age, how long he has been out of D1 and his record at UAM. A little better that .500 record at a D2 school is not going to light up a fan base. What they will not appreciate is what a tough job UAM is and how much better Mike's record is that the 10 years before him.

I will be surprised if he gets the job. I will not be surprised if he makes ULM better if he does get the job.

Well put. I think he would do a good job there. I just don't think their AD will take the heat of hiring a DII coach with a mediocre record, unless his other options don't pan out.

Could be true, unless of course there is, like here, no heat to be had.

Supposedly Keith Richard and Kenny Natt, both applied (or at least inquired about the job). Richard is an LSU assistant and has been a head coach at LaTech. He also played and coached at ULM. Natt, brother of Calvin, also played at ULM and has been a long time NBA assistant and briefly a head coach at Sacramento. I think both would have a lot of support in Monroe.

RE: Mike Newell to ULM? - insideualr - 04-16-2010 07:00 PM

Richard was not much of a coach. He had a NBA player on the team for 4 years and never made the ncaa tournament.

What's the status of Joe Pasternack at UNO? Would he not be considered?

I actually wondered the same thing. I think he did about as could as anyone could have at UNO, considering the circumstances.

stAte played UNO late in the year (the last Thursday of the regular season as I recall) and on the post game show Brady said he had voted for Pasternack as the SBC coach of the year because he had done such a good job of keeping his team together and competing under the circumstances.

ULM is the smallest SBC school with the least fan support. Probably the lowest budget too, but I don't know that for sure. The facilities over all are subpar. But they are situated in and near areas with good athletes. It would be a tough job, but not impossible (in my very uninformed opinion).

Back 15-20 years ago, ULM (maybe they were NE LA then) was very good program that made postseason a number of times. Maybe their now outdated facilities were still considered good back then.

I thought their arena was pretty nice. Now as far as the overall facilities for their basketball program, I don't know about that. I didn't go down in the bowels of the arena and see dressing rooms, weight rooms, training rooms, and practice facilities. I'm sure it's nowhere near as nice as Stephens Center, but not many are either.

Twenty years from now, people will be saying those same things about the Jack. "No wonder Steve Shields can't build a winning program there, the facitlites are outdated, and worn out."

I really don't think that the arena at ULM is much if at all better than Barton, other than it is on campus. It reminded me a of poor man's version of The Tad Pad at Ole Miss, which is pretty much a dump.
