Coach of the Year - Shannon Panther - 03-07-2010 08:45 PM

Jim Boeheim vs Jamie Dixon, who you got?

Syracuse was picked to finish 6th in the conference and won the regular season title. Boeheim has a 1st, 2nd, and rookie all Big East Players. They have most likely locked up a #1 seed in the NCAA tourny.

Pitt was picked to finish 9th and finished tied for second with Villanova, & WVU. Dixon has a 2nd team all Big East team player in Ashton Gibbs. Pitt beat 3 top 5 teams including Syracuse. They have won 8 of the last 9 games.

I think an argument could be made for either, so who do you think wins it?

I discount Chris' viewpoint. He's prejudiced... 05-stirthepot

I also agree with Shannon. A good case could be made for either. Boeheim will probably win it, but I think Dixon did by far the better job. Boeheim was expected to have a good bit of talent. Pitt wasn't. Not after having most of the team graduate. IMO, that tilts the balance in favor of Jamie Dixon...

RE: Coach of the Year - SF Husky - 03-07-2010 09:06 PM

Dixon deserves it. You can also make a case for Marquette's Buzz Williams. Jimmy B will probably win it but Dixon should win it.

It will be a shame if ANY of those three don't get the award--each and every one of them did a fantastic job making their team finish 1st, 2nd, and 5th. Know how to solve it--make it a tri-coach of the year--Jimmy B. Jamie D, and Buzz. But the BE would never allow that.

RE: Coach of the Year - bitcruncher - 03-07-2010 10:37 PM

I'd vote for Huggins, if my vote counted. But he never seems to stand a prayer of getting such recognition. So it's pretty much academic on that account...

RE: Coach of the Year - quo vadis - 03-07-2010 11:01 PM

Boeheim should and will win.

RE: Coach of the Year - CollegeCard - 03-07-2010 11:21 PM

Boeheim deserves it. Very honorable mention for Dixon, Williams, and a name not mentioned so far, Stan Heath. Those 4 should collect 100% of the votes.

Huggins has done a good job, BUT WVU was pre-season top 10 and that is where they are now, so he has done as expected--he hasn't turned a program picked in the ashes to the top 10.

RE: Coach of the Year - Shannon Panther - 03-08-2010 12:13 AM

Fred Hill was quoted in the Pittsburgh paper as saying he voted for Dixon. That was actually what triggered this thought. I too think that Boeheim will win it, but I don't think it will be by a landslide. Buzz Williams and Stan heath certainly deserve consideration as well. I am willing to bet that all 4 of them get at least 2 votes each and that is half the conference.

Boeheim deserves it

Boeheim will run away with it as well as the national coach of the year.

Huggins had a top 10 team - WITHOUT a true PG. That's pretty d@mn amazing when you think about it...

What can I say? I'm prejudiced in this matter. I do think Boeheim will win it, although I think Dixon did the better job...

RE: Coach of the Year - Maize - 03-08-2010 12:26 PM

Gotta go with Boehiem even though Dixon has done an incredible job. As good as Huggins has been WVU has done what was expected of them. Not selling HuggyBear short but nobody expected Syracuse to get to Number 1 and win the BIG EAST without Harris and Flynn. They were picked 6th in the Preseason in the BIG EAST.

I agree completely on Stan Heath what he's done this year with USF has been damn impressive. I really wish he were our coach on the banks instead of Fred Hill.

RE: Coach of the Year - bitcruncher - 03-08-2010 12:35 PM

You're right there. Stan Heath has done a great job making the Bulls respectable. If the Bulls show similar improvement next season, Heath might win this award next year...

Yep, right about Heath. If not for the injuries early in the year the Bulls would be a NCAA Lock right now. Hell if they win 2 in the BET they should get very strong consideration.

RE: Coach of the Year - CyberBull - 03-08-2010 01:04 PM

Stan Heath is changing the culture at USF. He is showing that this is not the "most difficult job in America" if you have a solid plan, support from the administration and obviously membership in college basketball best conference.

He has seen a lot of roster churn, and still needs to get more players at USF, but he has COACHED his team into 9-9 record in the BigEast an accomplishment that many established programs in the ACC would have a hard time matching. This is more than a one man team. Jones is by far USF's best player, but the rest of the team has been put in the right situations all year long and making the most of their abilities. This is not the old Seth Greenberg USF teams, where he used that gimmicky 1-3-1 all the time and just rolled the ball on the court as a game plan.

If CSH can leverage this year's success into a couple solid signings this Spring and maintain stability among his coaching staff and the big if....IF DoJo and Gus Gilchrist stay for another year, USF should be a solid team next year and be ready to challenge for a NCAA bid from day one.

Oh....USF Athletic Director Doug Woolard needs to sign Coach Heath to an extension....pronto!
