Great photo of the strip. I think that the Normal Tea Room was owned by one of my great uncle/aunt ---have to check with family about that.

I am trying to refresh my memory about the railroad tracks by Highland. Wasn't there a guy who had an elaborate box home that he constructed next to the tracks?

Yeah ........ in the 1970-80's that worked at Memphis State/UofM that was a guy that was a groundskeeper yard guy.

I think that he also lived in cardboard boxes by the Railroad 'Right-of-Way' between Walker Ave. & Southern Ave. area near Brister St. where there was a Bicycle Shop & a Lumber Yard.

He was iconic as he wore large horned rim glasses & always had a olive green army billed hat sideways on his head with a fairly large Afro & had a Cigar Butt in his mouth.

Somebody in the Art Department designed a T-Shirt with his image on it & a fair amount of people wore them on campus.

Might've been a case of PTSD?

Eddie cleaned up all the junk around the businesses in the area and placed it in his "yard". He lived for a while in a broke down car behind the Bull Shott until some frat punk burned it.

Refresh my memory on the Bull Shott. Used to hang out at Big Daddys across from the Blood Bank and the video arcade, and Across the Tracks and of course the Varsity and Mongos. Where was the Bull Shot?

I believe the Normal Tea Room in the picture above.

Rhodes is considered on of the top 50 most beautify campuses per Conde Nash Traveler.

https://www.cntraveler.com/galleries/2016-01-29/the-20-most-beautiful-college-campuses-in-america

It is pretty, but I think Maryville College is better and second in the State of Tennessee only to the University of the South (a.ka., Sewanee).

https://vimeo.com/191026676

The video does not give justice for the premium view of the Smokies from the MC campus nor the uniqueness of the "College Woods" part of the campus.

I went to the comedy club along the strip few times what was open in the early to mid 80's. I believe everyone played pool at the Highland Cue at 1 time or another. Lance Russel owned it at one time.

I'm sorry but IMHO that doesn't hold a candle to the Southwestern at Memphis/Rhodes campus.

Original Stepherson’s Big Star Grocery Store, 3394 Macon Rd., Memphis TN - Circa 1950

.

That building was recently demolished.

I don't think so. I just drove by there the other night.

It was still standing; but covered by a different facade.

It's at the intersection of Macon Rd. at Maria. Northwest corner.

.

3394 Macon is on the corner at National. There is a new building being constructed on that site.

I don't know if Stepherson's recorded the address wrong but here is the same original building with a current photo.

Google maps records it as 3874 Macon Rd..

You can see it's the same building. I grew up very close to there & my Mom shopped at Stepherson's.

Went to Church & kindergarten 2 blocks west of there & lived off of Waring Rd. about 2 miles east of there.

The former grocery store at 3394 Macon was partially razed and does have a new front facade. It will be a convenience store/gas station. 3874 Macon is still there at Maria and Macon and the present
Stepherson's Big Star is at 3942 Macon between Maria and Graham.

The store at 3394 Macon and National was called Silver Saver #7.
And I noticed that in the picture in the upper right hand corner of the front window it shows that store to be #11. And the car in front is a 1952 Ford so it was taken around 1952/53.

Also I found this that indicates they started in 1944 and their first store was on Rembert St. in midtown. And the store presently at 3942 Macon must have opened in 1960. I think this info was from a Vance Lauderdale article.
