Memphis Fairgrounds Art Deco Entrance, East Parkway South, Memphis TN - Circa 1956

What intersection is this, Young?

Down from Young. It is across from what I think now is a pawn shop but back then was a restaurant. The traffic light was for a cross walk.

Gay Hawk Restaurant, 685 S Danny Thomas Blvd, Memphis TN

I wouldn't want to spend any time there these days.

Wasn't it the Farrisview? 2 Polar Bear statues.

Went thru that very intersection twice today.

Fairview I think. I couldn't remember the name.

RE: Memphis Landmarks - Hernando Hills Tiger - 09-18-2017 09:32 PM

"The Fairview Drive In - Steaks - Pit Bar-B-Q - Chicken" and "Old Fashioned Frozen Custard"

The drive-in closed and it's now a pawn shop but the two polar bears are still standing out front.

Happy Hocker Fairview, 975 E. Parkway S. - right across the street from the Fairgrounds

a nice watercolor of the Fairview from around the same time by Memphis artist and art teacher Helen Stahl: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51992558@N00/4874537854

About half a block from Young Ave.

The City tore this Gate down in the early 60's.

Great examples of classic Detroit built cars. Chrome bumpers that weigh 50lbs or more. Todays bumpers are nothing more than a vinyl cover on a piece of styrofoam.

I didn't realize the world was that colorful in 1956.

Absolutely; they had a standard gear box with a stick shift

Was that the place with the old railroad caboose? I had totally forgotten about it.

Plus the man in the second row, red collar with white shirt is Jeff Porter. He has been with the Atlanta Braves 33 years now, the past many as their head athletic trainer. On a sad side note, Porter's wife was killed in a auto accident with a Georgia state trooper in 2011.

Didn't know that. Really would love for the Redbirds to offer that "M" cap as part of their Chicks throwback items. I had one as a kid and even had an old plastic batting helmet like that that my grandfather bought me at Timmy Mac.
