I find it interesting in our thinking about Will - outsideualr - 02-02-2010 10:36 AM

Neighbour and where he will end up. Some seem to feel it's a done deal if he's offered a scholarship at a BCS school, he'll automatically go there.
Well there are certainly players at schools like Gonzaga, Butler and a lot of places who probably chose those schools over some BCS schools for some reason.

Everyone doesn't automatically want to attend a school just because it's a BCS school. My guess is that those schools are recruiting basketball players who are also pretty good students. They don't all believe they're going to the NBA, and some have aspirations other than basketball when they graduate. They are looking for an education, and basketball is their way of obtaining it.

Some have consistently mentioned that we seem to attempt to recruit athletes, and not necessarily players with good basketball skills. Obviously there are exceptions, but I see a pattern in the past of that being the case. We need players who already have good skills coming out of high schools. Of course they can improve, but it's difficult to teach a kid fundamentals while at the same time you're trying to work on team offense and defense. They need to be able to dribble, pass and shoot before they reach a college campus, and some of ours can't do that.

Brady was quoted that it's his job to recruit high school players in order to build a program where you don't have the whole team leaving every year or two. But unless you can recruit some freshman like Brandon Reed who can step right in and play at a high level, that's a pretty tough thing to do. I like the fact that all of our recruits for next year are high school players. Pappy has lobbied for that for several years now, and he's probably right. The only problem is that your coaching job has to be fairly secure to do that, since those players normally take a little longer to be able to step in and play regularly. Tough deal.01-lauramac2
