Dooley talking to Kennesaw St. about football program

Legendary UGA Coach Vince Dooley confirmed to the AJC he has met with Kennesaw State officials about a role in developing a football program at the school.

"I have been visiting with them about a consulting position," said Dooley, who acknowledged he was intrigued by the idea of building a program from the ground up. He said further statements would have to come from KSU.

Dooley coached 25 years at Georgia, winning 201 games before retiring in 1988. He was the university's athletic director until being forced out by President Michael Adams in 2004.

KSU will announce a football exploratory committee next week, and on Tuesday school officials confirmed that a new stadium being built for the woman's soccer team could be expanded to accommodate football.

"Ever since I was nominated as president, I've been asked, ‘What's the story on football?'" said KSU President Daniel Papp. "Well, now we're going to have, conceivably, a place to play."

Dooley's role would likely be similar to one played by former Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Reeves at Georgia State. Reeves offered input to GSU, which will field its first team in 2010.

The AJC has calls out to KSU athletics officials. Return to ajc.com for updates.

Let's not jump the gun. Yes, progress is being made, but no Ts have been crossed or Is dotted on anything yet involving football.

"The stadium, as it is currently being constructed, will have the ability of seating upwards of 16,000 people for concerts and could be expanded in the future for football if necessary. KSU is currently forming a football exploratory committee to determine if a football program would be wanted and/or supported. If a football team is to become a reality, the stadium could be expanded to as large as 22,000 seats."

Agreed its not going to happen right away but for them to leak all this information they are moving forward with Football but it could still be 10 years before they field a team.

"I have been visiting with them about a consulting position," said Dooley, who acknowledged he was intrigued by the idea of building a program from the ground up. He said further statements would have to come from KSU.

School officials declined comment Thursday but said they will be holding a press conference Dec. 10 to announce the formation of a football exploratory committee. On Tuesday school officials confirmed that a new stadium being built for the woman's soccer team could be expanded to accommodate football."

Looks like Dooley will be announced next week!

This link is great.

I like how the ETSU guys are talking about this in their forum.

At least it finally looks like were trying to get a football team. That whole survey thing we had a few semesters ago was a waste of time.

LOL 84

I was just coming over here to say that the ETSU guys seem to have some things to say about little ole Kennesaw.

The ETSU folks will be spewing right now, as they should be. Too bad their school hasn't had the guts to re-institute pigskin tossing.

Great to see a little more confirmation. I wonder what his role will be exactly?

Also don't mind seeing this on the front page of the AJC.

despite my earlier post, we as fans must be excited because if you ask me, and this is just logic, but in order to bring in a big time guy like Dooley, you really have to be figuring more than "exploratory" measures. I don't know. It wouldn't make sense to me otherwise.

This is still going to be a slow process...but Papp is doing this the right way. We are going to have to raise money, and Dooley has a LOT of loyal supporters. He will bring in the cash if he decides to join the party in Cobb County.

Yes - I think they have decided to make a move on football. This exploratory stuff is probably just a euphemism for conducting studies/inquiries into how to pay for it. You don't bring in Vince Dooley as a consultant just to think about having football, you bring him in because it's going to happen, and you need the leverage of a big name to bring in attention and donors.
