Tony Franklin has agreed to become offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State, Rivals.com has learned. An announcement is expected to be made Thursday.

Franklin, 51, takes over for G.A. Mangus, who left to coach quarterbacks at South Carolina. Franklin was fired just six games into last season by Auburn after the Tigers offense struggled to adapt to his spread scheme. Despite the struggles at Auburn, Franklin is considered by many to be one of the most innovative offensive minds in the game and a tremendous teacher.

Prior to joining Auburn, Franklin was a highly successful offensive coordinator at Troy from 2006-07. He also was an assistant at Kentucky under Hal Mumme from 1997-2000.

I really hope he helps MTSU like he helped us. It would be awesome to have two powerhouses in football. This will help the rivalry as well.

We've done ol without him. You have to remember that our coach is just now starting to use his recruits. We had some kids with real attitude problems that we had to let go and it has cost us over the past couple of years. But, yes, this will help a lot.

The only thing I don't understand about this hire is.... why didn't Stockstill hire him earlier? That way Franklin could've done a little bit of recruiting himself, especially for a QB that would fit his needs. Kind of like he did at Troy when he found Haugabook.

I think our OC left about 3 weeks ago, but I could be mistaken.

MT has to have jobs posted for a month before any hiring takes place. Its a Board of Regents thing I guess.

MT was ready to hire Insell for WBB, but the job requirements said they had to have collegiate experience, so 1 month later after re-posting the position with the new requirements, MT could finally hire him.

Hopefully it won't be a replay of the last game.

He sounds like an innovator that you may have to be a little patient with.

I think Franklin is going to open our offense up and score a lot more points.

Has anyone seen the team this summer yet? How do you look? I will be nosing around a bit when I bring my son up to move in.

I think we are doing well, except for linebacker and running back (too thin at both). If we get a couple of kids to step up, we could have a good season.
