LOS ANGELES, May 12 (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co. and the co-chiefs of Miramax Films are near a deal that would allow director Michael Moore to find a new distributor for his controversial documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," company officials said on Wednesday.

Disney, Miramax's parent company, had refused to release the film that chronicles America's reaction to the Sept. 11 attacks and links U.S. President George W. Bush's family and prominent Saudis that include the family of Osama bin Laden.

The film is set to premiere at the Cannes film festival, which began on Wednesday in the French Riviera city.

Miramax spokesman Matthew Hiltzik said Disney had agreed to sell rights to Moore's film to Miramax co-chief executives Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob Weinstein, who could then go out and find a new distributor.

A Disney spokeswoman, however, characterized the parties as still being in negotiations.

"We are very happy that Disney has agreed to sell 'Fahrenheit 9/11' to Bob and Harvey," Hiltzik said in a statement. "Bob and Harvey look forward to promptly completing this transaction."

Said Disney spokeswoman Zenia Mucha: "Disney has offered to sell Miramax's interest in the film to either a third party or Harvey and Bob."

Hiltzik said the terms offered by the Weinsteins were similar to a 1999 deal for the movie "Dogma," in which director Kevin Smith challenged Catholic doctrines, raising the ire of some church groups.

In that arrangement, the Weinsteins bought the rights to "Dogma" from Miramax with Disney's agreement, and then signed their own deal to have independent film company Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. release the movie to theaters.

Disney's decision, which it said it had made a full year ago, spurred headlines last week when Moore, the filmmaker behind 2002's Oscar-winning "Bowling for Columbine," went public with the comapny's refusal to distribute his film.

Is this surprising, Disney dosen't want to distribute a film that every other word is filled with hatred towards a sitting President, Go Figure!

You've seen it? Cool!

You don't have to see it to know what its about. Watch a Michael Moore interview, you see as much hate flowing threw him as a memeber of the kkk. It's sad that anybody could hate another individual, as he does Bush.

I don't think you have any warm and fuzzy feelings for John Kerry or Hillary Clinton for that matter.

You should be more even-handed in your rhetoric. You say it's sad Moore hates, but you hate as well. How sad!

What partisan statements you made here. I bet you were the chief hater of Bill Clinton, and we already know you hate former president Jimmy Carter. You likely even hate John McCain because he's critical of GW Bush. Oh yeah, I see now. You equate criticism with hatred.

Watch a Sean Hannity episode and it's clear he hates everyone who disagrees with him. :drink:

Can't wait to see this one flop.

There is a difference between laughing at at dem, and thinking they are out of their mind, and simply flat out hating someone like Moore does. Looks into Moore's eyes you can see it. Hannity is trying to get under the democrats nerves, so he says stupid statements that im sure he dosent beleive, at least not 100%.

You should get a job reviewing films for the Chicago Sun Times. Imagine the money you could save them in admission fees! Can you also judge a book by its cover?

I assume that you must have a specific incident in mind, however I think that KlutzDio was speaking in a general sort of way.

No, documentaries don't tend to get nominated for Picture of the Year due to having their own category. He may win that one, though. He has before. Remember?

Looks like he was pretty accurate, eh?

Quote:On behalf of our producers Kathleen Glynn and Michael Donovan from Canada, I'd like to thank the Academy for this. I have invited my fellow documentary nominees on the stage with us, and we would like to - they're here in solidarity with me because we like nonfiction. We like nonfiction and we live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elects a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons. Whether it's the fiction of duct tape or fiction of orange alerts we are against this war, Mr. Bush. Shame on you, Mr. Bush, shame on you. And any time you got the Pope and the Dixie Chicks against you, your time is up. Thank you very much.

The boos were loud, but certainly not even close to being from a majority. There were also cheers. He's been completely vindicated over time and should be commended for speaking up when most didn't have the guts to denounce the traitorous scum who misled this country into going to war.

Its pretty bad when people in Hollywood boo you. The only thing proven is he is an idiot.

I'm also angry that Bush lied to go to war, squandered the good will of the entire world, and blew a chance to unite this country in ways never before possible. In fact, it would seem to me that to be otherwise would indicate a simpleness of mind or a lack of patriotism.
