Not trying to take anything away from Wake Forest, but the TV announcers keep referring to an "ACC Regular Season Champion"
I may have missed it but I was under the impression that the ACC does NOT officially recognize a regular season champion. The champion of the ACC is the team that wins the ACC Tournament and the team that wins the most regular season games is only recognized as the #1 seed in the tourney. Is this correct?

Nope, they do recognize the ACC reg. season champs. The team gets a banner and championship rings...the same as the tourney champs.

If there's a tie and the #1 seed in the tourney is decided by a flip of a coin then both of the teams(#1 seed and #2 seed) are still regular season co-champs and awarded banners and rings?

Things sure have changed a lot since when only the winner of the ACC tourney was eligible to go to the NCAA's.

I was under the impression that the ACC office recognizes the ACC tourney champs as the ACC champs. I don't know if that's correct or not.

Could be. Maybe it's only the schools that recognize it. I'm just going on Tech, because we have a banner for being the outright champs in 1996 (see ring below). I don't think we have a banner for being the 1985 co-champs though.

I've always been under the same impression as Nate. UNC hangs a banner for both -- but then again, we were actually usually winning one or the other back in the day. 03-wink

it doesnt matter who gets credit, the acc regular season champ deserves more respect then the tournament champ

Bull... the ACC tourney measures how well a team can do under pressure and how well it can resist a fluke. The ACC regular season is just playing for seeding in the ACC tourney.

Those who recognize/respect the Regular Season Champs- other fans

BTW, I do think the ACC office recognizes the tourney champs as the ACC Champs, and the individual schools hang banners to honor their regular season championships. However, saying that the regular season is just for seeding and doesn't deserve as much respect as winning the tourney is bull.

It's just cause Gary has never won an ACC tourney, and Maryland has only won a few as a school.

The Regular Season ACC is worth respect, no doubt, but not nearly as much as the ACC tourney.

And Duke currently holds the record for most ACC regular season titles in a row, so this is an objective opinion.

It is true. The official conference champion is the winner of the ACC tournament. The "regular season champ" moniker is something touted by individual schools as a tool to use to distinguish themselves amongst each other in conference competition & competition for recruits. It's more of a "feel-good" thing, despite the harping by the media over the fact that "Wake hasn't won a regular season title outright since 1962"...

I've enjoyed my team being #1 in conference competition since the halfway point, but I realize that getting that #1 seed for the tourney is the goal, because the road to a conference championship is a little bit easier for a 1 seed than a 2 seed.

I guess we also have to realize that it's still a fact that whoever wins the ACC tournament is guaranteed a berth in the NCAA tourney while the winner of the regular season is not guaranteed a slot in the NCAA tournament.

We all know that the winner of the regular season "championship" is always going to be guaranteed a slot in the tourney. It's just a guaranteed at-large berth instead of an automatic bid.

Exactly.

Now, to avoid making a one-worded post...

Winning the ACC Regular Season "Championship" displays consistancy and the ability to win night in and night out, on the road and at home. Winning the ACC tourney displays the ability to get hot and stay hot over a 3 day (sometimes 4) period and, as Nate said, play well in pressure situations. Both are deserving of respect, but IMO, the regular season championship deserves more respect because winning it proves that you have played well for over two months. I mean, who do you think deserves more respect? A team that goes undeafeated in league play but loses in the tourney or a losing conference team that gets hot and wins the tourney? Sure, the losing team displayed an obvious TREMENDOUS performance to beat the odds, but should theirs ultimately be dubbed better than the (previously) undefeated team?

Now, when you win five in a row like Duke, that does deserve a great amount of respect (unfortunately 03-razz ).

Same way I feel. A good example is what happened in 1997. NC State finished 8th in the regular season. They beat Tech in the play-in game, then beat top seeded Duke and Maryland before falling just short against Carolina in the championship game. I have respect for that run they had, but that was a whole lot more of a fluke than Duke winning the regular season "championship" that year.

Without the ACC Tournament there could be the possibility of multiple teams in first place when the regular season is over. The ACC tournament gives us a clear cut ACC Champion to represent the conference. Without the ACC tournament there would be some goofy-assed set of rules that would determine the champ in case of a tie made up by the same people that gave us the alternating possession on a held ball rule.

I agree the regular season champ is noteworthy and being the regular season champ should be a lock for an NCAA bid. But the ACC tourney also gives a team who gets hot at the end of the season and may have had a rough beginning a chance to win a slot in the big dance.
