The last time Troy State and Southern Miss played a college football game was on Sept. 3, 1977, at Montgomery's Cramton Bowl. The next time the Trojans and Golden Eagles meet could be at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.

"We've approached them about playing," Troy State athletics director Johnny Williams said while in Mobile this week for the Coors Classic golf tournament. "We think it would be a great game for us at Troy State and we hope Southern Miss feels the same way. We think playing Southern Miss in Mobile would be a natural site. They've got a lot of fans here. We've got a lot of fans in this area."

Williams said Troy State would like to play a home-and-home series with Southern Miss and would be willing to have its home game in Mobile. He said he believes the crowd would be larger in Mobile than it would be if TSU played Southern Miss at Troy.

"We've expressed to (USM athletics director) Richard Giannini on several occasions that we would like to pursue a game here at some point in the future," Williams said. "Especially with the rule now that you can play at a mutual site and count it as a home game. We view Mobile as a second home base for us, and Southern Miss would be a natural rival."

Giannini confirmed he has talked with Williams about the possibility of playing in Mobile but wouldn't specu late on if or when a game could be arranged.

"Johnny and I have talked about it, but I'm not sure when it could happen," said Giannini. "We've got eight conferences games we have to play and we've been trying to get BCS teams to play us. It's something we will consider, but whether it can be worked out, I can't say right now."

The games Southern Miss has scheduled outside of Conference USA in 2004 include Nebraska, California and Alabama.

This sounds like a great idea to me perhaps it would (not only be good for Troy and Southern Miss) give the USA admin. and fans an idea of what having 1-A football at their school would be like. If it happens, should be a great game to watch.

We tried this the year before last with FAMU (who was a big 1-AA foe) and it was pretty much a failure.

Mobile is too far of a drive for the Troy fans that still rely on horse and buggy for transportation.
