Chad Seitz kicked a 20-yard field on the game's final play as Miami, Ohio took advantage of a bad snap from center on a punt and stunned 25th-ranked Northwestern, 30-28. Northwestern (1-1) squandered a 21-point fourth-quarter lead to spoil its first game as a nationally ranked team since 1971. The Wildcats moved into the rankings thanks to a 17-15 upset of Notre Dame two weeks ago. The Redskins (2-1) recorded their first win over a ranked team since a 21-12 victory over L-S-U in 1986. "We felt we had to stay close," Miami head coach Randy Walker said. "We do that and I like our chances at the end. We have a bunch of young guys on defense. I guess today was the day for them to step up. Thank God for Chad Seitz coming through." Miami had missed an opportunity to move ahead with 2:22 remaining when a two-point conversion pass by Sam Ricketts fell incomplete. Northwestern led, 28-27, in the final minute when it attempted to punt on fourth down from its own 35-yard line. A low snap by center Larry Curry rolled past punter Paul Burton and Miami recovered on the Wildcats 1. "Paul Janus is our snapper, and he got hurt on the second play of the game," Northwestern head coach Gary Barnett said. "Larry Curry is our backup, and he had a bad day. We don't have another deep snapper other than those two. It ended up being our demise." The Redskins tried two unsuccessful running plays by Ricketts before he threw the ball down to stop the clock. Seitz, who had missed from 47 and 38 yards earlier in the game, then kicked the game-winner as time ran out. The botched punt was the second special teams failure by the Wildcats. Dee Osborne of Miami returned a blocked punt for a touchdown late in the quarter to cut the deficit to 21-7. "They (Miami) outhustled us, they out-hit us, out-coached us and out-played us," Barnett said. "We were never in control of that game. Special teams, which had been our strength, let us down tremendously. And this is about as low as it gets." Steve Schnur threw touchdown passes of 27 and 36 yards to D'Wayne Bates and 13 yards to running back Darnell Autry to give Northwestern a 21-0 cushion. Wildcats cornerback Rodney Ray dropped a sure interception for a touchdown on Miami's ensuing possession. Autry carried 35 times for 152 yards. Northwestern regained a 21-point advantage when Ray atoned for the drop by returning an interception 20 yards for a score 51 seconds into the third quarter. Ricketts threw touchdown passes of five yards to Jay Hall and nine yards to Jeremy Adkins to cut the deficit to 28-21. The Redskins moved to within 28-27 with 2:22 left on a two-yard run by Ty King, but failed to go ahead when the two-point conversion failed. Ricketts replaced starter Neil Dougherty and completed 13 of 26 passes for 180 yards. - WazzuCoug82 - 07-26-2002 03:06 PM what a win for Miami over a top 25 team!! |
