We've all had 'em -- those sinking, sick in the gut feelings as you watch something really horrible happen to your team. I thought it would be interesting, since we are all now extremely optimistic about out teams' chances this year, to bring ourselves down a peg and remember those bad times!

My Miami low point might well have been in 1987, my sophomore year of college. It was the year after our MAC championship season. We had some real players on the 1987 team -- Gary Gussman was an All-American kicker, Sheldon White went on to play in the NFL, Andy Schillinger was a stud at WR....

Anyway, I went up to Toledo for the game and to visit my grandfather. I took the bus, stopping at every crappy town along the way...Troy, Piqua, Findlay, Bowling Green....UGHHHH! No kidding, I think the bus ride took 8 hours! And let me tell you, you always meet the finest people travelling to Toledo via bus!

It was a night game in the @ss Bowl, and it started pouring down rain about midway through the 2nd quarter. I'm surrounded by unemployed auto workers who are becoming increasing vocal, hostile, and intoxicated as the game wears on.

It really was a pretty good game. Mike Bates was 38-65 with 341 yds. Andy Schillinger had 13 receptions for 156 yards. All these were Miami records.

Alas, it was all for naught. We lost 25-37, as I was continuously insulted, taunted, and harassed. Towards the end of the game, the guys behind me (who evidentily still thought the AMC Pacer deserved to be manufactured) took umbrage to my Red and White and began to try to decorate my outfit with beer. I swear to god, one full beer can caught me in the head. Meanwhile, my grandfather just sat there chuckling.

A great game, you say! Sure.

However, it was the beginning of the "Dark Ages" of Miami football. From that point forward, we managed only to beat Bowling Green and Kent for the next two and one half years.

Should I mention that we got embarrassed 54-3 a couple weeks later at Coral Gables?

Naahh...probably not.

Oh, and should I mention that Ball State beat us 45-14 the next year at Yeager?

No....that's too painful, too.

Perhaps now you see why we are so hunger for a MAC Championship.

In '98 UCF got a conditional offer to be in a Christmas Day Bowl game. The condition was Miami needed to beat UCLA. Miami was 10 point favorites in the game. Well, we didn't go bowling that year at 9-2 with "Culpepper".

First quarter. Indiana at the Glass Bowl. First game of the season for a team that went undefeated the year before. Heisman candidate Wasean Tait bobbles a pitch in the backfield, recovers and tries to make the corner. He gets caught in the backfield. Wasean goes one way, his leg goes two other ways.

By the end of the season, Toledo had lost so many RBs that they were converting linebackers to RBs just to have someone to play the position.

CMU versus Florida. 1997. 'Nuff said.

The 1994 MAC championship game, for obvious reasons.

Thanks RF! After the Florida memory, I needed that...

I think the worse for me was the 1995 Ball State game.....my brother (a BSU grad) had a buddy who was a radio sports broadcaster in Ft. Wayne, and he got us field passes at Yager for the game. Miami fans here know that Miami led throughout, but BSU's big back (I forget his name) broke out on a 50 yard type gallop on a 4th and 1 play.....BSU scored to go ahead by a couple points with around a minute or so to play.

Miami drove the ball up the field, and our FG kicker hit the right upright with a long kick as time expired and we lost. That was the season we finished 2nd to Toledo, who was unbeaten (but tied by us), and beat Big Ten champ Northwestern. We lost to Michigan (in a respectable game that was 31-19 in the 4th quarter before we lost 38-19) to finish 8-2-1, and miss another MAC title and bowl opportunity. That kick meant we lost a MAC co-title.

Being right on the field and "taking it" from the BSU guys made this a very tough loss for me.

That just wasn't fair to Tait. He would have turned a lot of heads that year and we would still be talking about how great he is in the NFL. I don't think I have seen the fans at the Glass Bowl more shocked and quiet than right after that play.

Up 32-12 in 2000 in Ypsi-****ing-lanti, our D falls completely apart in the 4th quarter. EMU's QB just tore us up, and it was like our DBs weren't even on the field. We were 5-4 going in, looking for NIU's first winning season in 10 years, and we give up 27 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to EMU.

Close second are two losses to Vandy - one in Dekalb in '97 - a tight game, we have the ball, and our QB gets hit in the pocket, fumbles, bounces right into a DE's hands for a 40 yard TD and a 17-7 loss. The other was down there in '99, and we were up 24-7 in the third. We couldn't catch a cold after that, losing 34-31.

I don't have to go back very far for my misery....so fresh..... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="mad-flaming.gif" />

I was sitting behind the uprights and when I saw Weseans leg go funny...I knew something was wrong. Mann he had a promising future in the NFL...I still think Wasean was a better back(before injury) then Chester

I've got a few, all our fault, and all in the waning moments of the game:
A trip at Ole Miss. A fumble at South Carolina.
A fumble at Auburn. A fumble at Georgia Tech.
A flag at Georgia.

Oh yeah, one more, when Alabama went ahead late in the game that made the game look like so many other games I'd seen us lose.

All last season for Georgia Tech.

UCF missing a bowl game. It was the best season I've ever seen UCF play and everyone was so excited to go to a bowl.

Only Miami had to beat UCLA...that was a great back and forth offensive game, but Miami lost and UCF lost out on the bowl bid =/

The UCLA defense had been suspect all year but somehow Cade McClown had pulled them through until Edgerrin James ran and received something like 250 yds and Miami killed UCLA knocking us out of the Hula/Aloha Bowl. That really sucked.

My low point is definitely the Auburn game where we lost on the last play when the DB fell down in coverage.

Being a KSU football fan from 1989 - 2000. Ugh!
In 1987 and 1998, they were competitive. That's how I got sucked in. After that, until last year was torture.

- DrTorch - 08-22-2002 07:56 AM

BG at Penn State in 1998. PSU fans are usually pretty good, but I got to sit by one dork (who of course didn't even go to college) who had to comment, "they look like a HS team."

So I express sincere gratitutde to toledo for a 24-6 pounding that made the Nittany Lions look like a f'n HS team.

- OVERHERD - 08-22-2002 08:18 AM

Lasting Low Points: Losing to an inferior Furman team in 1988 to knock us out of the 1-AA playoffs and possible 1-AA title.

Losing the NCSU game on a bogus phantom call "neutral zone infraction" call on Jim Bernardoni after we had stopped a comeback attempt by NCSU. We led the whole game then lost in closing minutes.

Momentary Low Point: The missed extra point at the end of the GMAC bowl. When Watts caught that ball we exploded into celebration. There was crying, laughing, screaming, you name it. Then it was like somebody let the air out of the balloon.

- Knightshift - 08-22-2002 08:26 AM

There is little doubt in my mind about what is the worst I have ever felt as a fan. It was a game that, to this day, still makes me shake my head in anger and disbelief.

Its November 7th, 1998. Me and my friends are sitting in Jordan-Hare stadium with a few thousand other UCF fans in Auburn, Alabama watching a hard-nosed, defensive battle between our Golden Knights and Auburn Tigers. The game was very low-scoring, as we were clinging to a scant 6-3 lead late in the 4th quarter.

But things were looking good. We managed to halt Auburn yet again and Daunte Culpepper was leading the offense towards the Tiger end zone. Time was widing down to around the 3-minite mark in the 4th quarter and we had the ball in or around the red zone (can't recall exactly). Things were looking so bad for Auburn, that their fans were starting to file out of the exits. This delighted UCF fans to no end, and only served to raise the volume of our cheers. The long-awaited break-through victory as a young 1A team was at hand.

And then it happened.....

I don't know what football god we offended. But we must have done something to piss them off, because NEVER IN MY LIFE have I seen things go so terribly wrong in such a short amount of time. And I've been watching football since I was old enough to walk.

As I said, we had the ball around Auburn's 20 yard line and were driving for a game-clinching score. Culpepper lined up in shotgun, like he had done for most of the game, and called out the signals. But when the center hiked the ball, he sent it at Daunte's feet, catching him by surprise and causing the ball to bounce away from him. We all screamed in aggravation as Auburn jumped on the ball. But all was not lost. Time was getting short and we had stopped them time and time again. We just had to do it one more time and they had 80 yards to go, or around 50 for field goal to tie the game.

First down, incomplete pass. Second down, incomplete pass. UCF fans are getting more and more intense as we could smell victory. Third down, the Auburn QB throws the ball right at Deaubry Devine, our MLB. The ball hits him square on his #6 and he drops it. UCF fans wail at the missed opportunity. But at least now its 4th and 10. One last play. One more stop and victory is ours. The Auburn QB takes the snap and passes a quick out for 10 yards and a first down. DAMN! A wasted opportunity. But still, time is growing short and they still have a long way to go.

Then it happened. The next play (it could have been a few plays later....I don't recall), the Auburn QB throws another quick out towards the sideline. The receiver catches the ball, and our defender is there....but he makes a FATAL decision. Instead of making the sure tackle for a minimal gain, he decides to go for the interception.....and whiffs. Seeing the opening, the receiver starts run upfield, but one of our safties is coming over the make the tackle......and somehow, some way.......he misses. After that there is nothing between the receiver and the endzone but green grass and he streaks down the UCF sideline for the go-ahead, game-winning touchdown. Final score: Auburn 10, UCF 6.

UCF fans, coaches, and players, are all just standing there in total stunned disbelief. Just moments before we were all intoxicated with excitement over the biggest win in school history. In those few moments that joy was shattered into devastation. It was the classic case of "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory."

Its a day that will live in infamy for all UCF fans, and a day that wish I could forget. We would later go on to receive a conditional bid to the inagural Oahu Bowl in Hawaii. All that had to happen was for heavily-favored UCLA to beat Miami in Coral Gables. We all watched in disgust as the Bruins laid an egg in the Orange Bowl. Miami dashed our Oahu Bowl hopes, and then rubbed salt in the wound by taking a bid to the Micron PC Bowl. A bid that WE were supposed to get until TV mogels said "No way."

It was a dark time and an unfortunate end to Culpepper's brilliant UCF career.
