BTW- this is not a Mexican city. History teacher without knowledge of Geography.

It was a Mexican city and many, many people in this town can trace their roots back to Mexico.

Mexico has always been a popular tourist spot and many people admire and enjoy Mexican culture. However, because of the violence in recent years, there are many Americans who cannot enjoy Mexico. That is why El Paso should market itself as a destination that gives tourists a taste of Mexican culture without having to actually go to Mexico.

We are not Mexico.

The Spanish language, food, architecture, and overall culture is a hybrid of American and Mexican cultural characteristics.

I certainly wouldn't go to San Jose because of their heavy Philippino population, as an alternative to visiting Manilla.
Or
And I wouldn't go to New York instead of Italy, due to NY's Italian-American population.

Your logic is flawed. Big-time.

No we are not Mexico but El Paso has to find a unique way to market itself. Places like San Jose doesn't have to sell itself on culture because of their geographical location. El Paso doesn't have the luxury of an Ocean or beautiful forest.

El Paso has to market what they have and that's Mexican culture.

First off- Don't you think the rest of the country already knows there is a heavy Mexican influence here? They have known for decades... AND it isn't working.

Second- Los Angeles has Chinese culture.

I'm sure that's where you go to experience the Chinese culture, and that's the reason your family wants to go there.... And not because LA has Universal Studios, Dodger Stadium, Laker games, Knotts Berry Farm, Santa Monica Pier, and so on.

You claim you hate it when people settle for things.... And here you are, doing it yourself.

No I don't. Most people don't even know where El Paso is. When you tell people that there is a 1 million people metro on the border with Mexico where you can experience all the culture of Mexico without all the violence, that is a something you can sell and market.

The reason why El Paso hasn't become a tourist destination by now is becuase it does the opposite. It tries to downplay our proximity to Mexico and it tries to downplay our Mexican culture.

If I'm wrong, explain to my why Mountain Star sports elected to make their mascot the Chihuahua? Clearly they know more about marketing than you or I.

They could also go to East LA., or parts of Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, San Diego, and even Chicago, to do the same thing....

You correlating the Chihuahua dog mascot selection, to the marketing of an entire city- based on Mexican culture influence found in areas in most cities now......

I give up.....

But you go on, and market the city that way with your 5 dollar budget. 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle 01-wingedeagle I'll promote, vote for, and spend money on attractions that will improve the quality of life, and make the town a more attractive destination.

Agree. I'm done.

Not sure if he really is THAT thick-headed.... Or if he is doing it just to giggle with his friends to say how he gets on this site to "set everyone straight".

Anyway, Circles is right. Stupid is as stupid does.

RE: EP Chihuahuas
I'm simply offering my opinion. I believe that El Paso would stand to gain more tourist by playing up their connections to Mexico rather than downplaying them.

As for quality of life. I disagree on that subject as well.

The whole " build it and they will come" idea only works in the movies.

Once again, the city has it backwards.

You don't build a bunch of nice things and hope that people move in and improve the economy.

What you do is improve the education level of the citizens which in turn creates a high skilled work force that attracts higher paying jobs.
