Coaching Prospects-
Who are some of names that we will be hearing about over the next few months as replacements for some of the openings that will be available?

Putting together a short list, I would go with Paul Petrino (he won yesterday, which is no small feat... although Temple is terrible), David Shaw (Texas should go after him), Carl Pelini (he's doing a great job at FAU), Chad Morris and as always, Kirby Smart.

Thoughts?

Nebraska's defenses seem to be awful ever since Carl Pelini left his brother to be a head coach. Maybe Nebraska should hire HIM when they fire Bo.05-stirthepot

RE: Coaching Prospects-
I don't see why Shaw would leave. I believe his pops coached for Stanford and he himself played there, too, so I see that a pretty tough catch for Texas.

Even if things went sorta' meh for them, it's Stanford. Be respectful, I guess, and it's okay. Texas? Not so much.

I don't get the love for Jeff Fisher to USC, since he's drawing an NFL HC paycheck, but I do like the Jack Del Rio rumor. I'm sure he's got connections and could get a staff together.

Would hate to see it, but Shawn Watson, OC at UofL, was looked at last year and will get more offers this year.

Houston's tennis coach is spreading the rumor....

Yeah, I don't see Fisher as a college coach.

Del Rio on the other hand has always seemed to be more of a college style coach to me. If he can get some experienced recruiters on staff his personality seems like he would be an excellent "closer" and I wouldn't be surprised if he had USC back to the Pete Carroll level in short order.

As for the OP, at some point someone has to look at the job that Craig Bohl has done in Fargo and think he is worth a legitimate shot. He played and coached at Nebraska, does Big Red bring him home if they cut Bo loose?

I'm not so sure that Bo is going anywhere this season; maybe next if he does not get things more to their liking.

Bohl would be a great hire. Rob Ambrose at Towson would be a good hire for UConn. Another name: Danny Rocco at Richmond. He's a very good coach.

That would be a tough sell. Osborne fired Bohl after Nebraska's defense fell apart in 2001-2002 -- most notably in a 62-36 beatdown by Colorado.

I don't see Bobby Petrino mentioned here. Wouldn't he be a virtual lock to turn someone around (like Texas)?

If Del Rio takes a college coaching job, it will be the USC job. Nebraska wouldn't offer him the same chance for success...

I don't think that you'll see someone like UConn or Texas hire him. He's a lying dirtball, a cheater and someone of questionable character. Many boosters do not want someone like that leading the kids...

However, if he does well at WKU he'll get his shot.

RE: Coaching Prospects-
Here's an observation that nicely points out how it's not easy to find a great coach, even at the big-name programs:

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/sbna..._USC_.html
Quote:... omitting Carroll from the equation, the five hires USC has made since John Robinson left (the first time) went 26-20-1 (Ted Tollner), 44-25-3 (Larry Smith), 37-21-2 (Robinson's second tenure), 19-18 (Paul Hackett), and 28-14 (Kiffin).

... Alabama's three hires before Nick Saban were Mike DuBose, Dennis Franchione, and Mike Shula. Texas' three before Mack Brown were Fred Akers, David McWilliams, and John Mackovic. Oklahoma's three before Bob Stoops were Gary Gibbs, Howard Schnellenberger, and John Blake. And of course, Notre Dame's three before Brian Kelly were Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis.

Wedge, IMO it's more of a condemnation on the ADs at those schools at the time. A competent AD should have no trouble finding or attracting a good coach to come to their school, without resorting to one dud after another...

I think Chris Petersen from BSU finally makes a move, especially a destination job like USC. Franklin from Vanderbilt will get a lot of run, and do not be surprised to see Tressell come out of the woodwork for one of these high profile jobs.

Tressel has a show cause ruling against him until 2016. That will preclude him from getting a job at USC, or any other program currently on probation. They're laboring under a heavy enough penalty as it is...

And as Pete Carroll had USC humming along at a high level, other PAC 12 programs were at that time were not. Oregon, Stanford, UCLA are all playing rather well. How bad was Washington a few years back, today they are much better. No guarantee that the next coach will get you back to being a Top Ten team annually. PAC 12 is more competitive today top to bottom.

I agree, Bit, there are a lot of ADs out there making questionable hires (or giving questionable long-term extensions to coaches who shouldn't get them -- hey there, Charlie Weis). Also, too many ADs hide behind the search firms that often have huge conflicts of interest whenever they recommend a coach.

I agree with this, too. The conference is really deep with good coaches right now. Just one example: Some sportswriters have Steve Sarkisian on their list for USC's opening, but even though UW is looking good so far this year, Sark is, at best, the fourth-best coach in the north division.

I think he's pretty much got to make a move soon or he runs the risk of getting stuck like Pat Hill did at Fresno.
