OT: Calling Out Bama's "Good Ole Gal" Sororities
I was hesitant to post this for fear of being accused of spawning Bama hate, but I couldn't get it off my mind. In this day and age and with what is going on in Birmingham and Alabama this year its kinda ridiculous. Kudos to the undergrads and others for calling 'em out for it...

I had a link to the al.com article in the B&G section, but I suspect the article coming from the students themselves is even better.

Amazing how the students feel one way, yet the machine directs them another way.

The good thing is that, much like a lot of political issues in the wider political world, the students who are pushing back against this will be the alumni in a few years and actual change has a real chance to take place

Why any black student, including athletes, would step on the UAT campus is beyond me.

I've always wondered the same thing..

I guess so many people, white and black, worship football success so highly that they turn a blind eye to the history of racism at that school.

RE: OT: Calling Out Bama's "Good Ole Gal" Sororities
A lot of the Greek fraternities and sororities are awful about crap like this here at UA. I've heard from friends that are in frats that they tell their "recruiters" not to recruit African-Americans. Strangely, the same for African-American fraternities telling their recruiters not to recruit white people. The whole thing is messed up. I have never cared to be a part of the Greek system, because I think it's dumb. Don't even get me started on hazing stories I have heard... But I do have a few friends that claim they like being a part of it.

It had nothing to do with the "machine" and everything to do with the crazy, controlling alums. Having 3 daughters go through rush at UA, the stories I could tell.

It's sad when parents stand in the way of their children's progress.

The site is back up, however the article currently is not there.

I suspect that for some reason they think that they have to take down the whole site to remove the article.

Either that or some changes were made & an incorrect hyperlink exists.

The article is there again.

You may wish to remove your stuff from here due to copyright deals.

I've always wondered the same thing..

I guess so many people, white and black, worship football success so highly that they turn a blind eye to the history of racism at that school.

In the rarified atmosphere that is Crimson Tide football, being on the football team is not like being a mere mortal everyday student. It wasn't in 1960 and I doubt anything has changed much in that regard since. The primo status the star athletes enjoyed in high school is magnified and accentuated even more in college. The reality is that the team "family" is the most desegregated aspect of the campus, or the society around it.

The girls (or guys) who will do almost anything to curry their favor are not limited to one race or social class. Need a "paper" written? No problem - one can be found to provide that service. Since athletes have their choice of faculty to have for classes, it may well be the the source of their "work" may not be closely examined. The current issue of "S I" is examining this aspect of college football - mainly at OK State - but it is only a problem if the coaches are arranging these "aids to education" rather than just being voluntarily provided by "football mad" fellow students on their own.

My nephew, who was on a swimming scholarship at Bama, complained to his dad that when he returned to Bryant Hall after morning workouts and a couple of (premed) classes, he had difficulty finding a room that was not in use by an athlete and an "admirer" so he could get some sleep.

bingo!

...and why my successful businessman of a bro-in-law, who was abused and discriminated against by the machine when he was at UAT spends thousands and thousands of dollars on skyboxes and memorabilia is beyond me.
