RE: GO UAB! BEAT LSU in Death Valley...
the point differential is BAD.
total yardage: 445 to 296. Last year they averaged gaining 375 and giving up 308.
last year, they averaged giving up 17 per game

when you keep in mind that they play in the SEC and their offense is supposed to be much better this year than last year...well, those numbers dont seem so bad. yes, i do realize that some of our yardage was against their backups

Smh. The perception of UAB is that we are a joke.

That's not a new development. We been a joke in football for going on a decade. Hiring Neal Callaway was the official kick off to this era and we show few signs of a break out.

Actually, it was employing Watson Brown past 2005.

Meanwhile opposing quarterbacks are completing 90.3% of their passes.

RE: GO UAB! BEAT LSU in Death Valley...
This wasn't a terrific game for UAB, but not terrible either all things considered.

We have 3 great RBs that will rip holes in CUSA defenses. And we have a WR corps that has potential to spread the field. Really hoping we can get a decision on Humphrey by the next game because we need another big threat out there.

Liked what I heard from McGee about trying to get secondary to play tighter coverage. Don't know how well that will work, but at least he recognizes the problem and wants to work on it this week.

I expected us to keep it closer, but we had some weird fluke-like plays that one would expect in a typical game (fumble deep in our territory, allowing big punt return, allowing FG attempt return for TD, etc). I think we will be fine in CUSA if we keep getting better.

At this point we need to commit to either stopping the run or stopping the pass. As long as the QB can stand an throw with impunity we're in trouble as any team would be. We need to figure out a way to get pressure on the passer. We gotta blitz, run the Buddy Ryan Bear 46 defense, or somethin'. We are simply putting too much pressure on the offense to score with every possession...

The talent is in place to score a lot of points in CUSA. If we can just get the defense up to decent, UAB can beat anyone in the conference. Seems like we been saying that for a hundred years.

We have GOT to get some pressure on the quarterback. When they've got time to take out a car loan back there, it won't much matter how tight our secondary plays.

RE: GO UAB! BEAT LSU in Death Valley...
Texas seems to have the same problem with their run defense that we have with our pass defense. They trail BYU 40-21 heading to the 4th qtr and have allowed 485 rushing yards...

But, back to topic. In the preseason the coaching staff talked about keeping the ball in front of the secondary(didn't work out well tonight). But that passive defense leads to less aggressive play which is what we do not need. With no pressure its just pitch and catch. Against teams that can't pass it may work well(FAU?), but most teams have a salvageable QB who can succeed against that type of defense. Of course, Troy's running QB couldn't throw but we could not stop him from running the ball...

RE: GO UAB! BEAT LSU in Death Valley...
OK, I just got home from watching the game at a buddy's house. Aside from the over matched aspect of the game, I found again that the coach seemed to be in his own little world with 1 particular time-management episode at the end of the first half. We were possibly headed for a touchdown to get us within 14 points at half. He calls run plays, allows ( I guess ) mucho time to tick off the clock and we wind up having to call timeout and kick a field goal. It was almost like what was happening near the end of regulation against Troy,,, trying to not give the ball back to the opposition as time was running out. What gives with this crap??? Brain Fart?? or what?

I apologize if this has already been talked about but I dont feel like reading all 12 pages of this thread. Im mad, Im tired and I want some sleep.

I think we got closer to scoring a TD than what the coach thought or perhaps some of us thought.

We should have had 1 chance at 1 more play to score but the operators ran off 2 more seconds than they should have.

During the Callaway years when we played with the Shuman defense we played offense to protect the defense. That does not work. We cannot go back to that. We have 2 weeks before the next game which, if what someone says is correct, is against a triple-option offense. If so, this may not be a good time to try to fix the defense, but we don't have a lot of choice...

The lost seconds on the clock occurred several plays before that last one with the TO at 5 seconds. Those were the questionable moments that got me cussing at him on the TV. By the time we had to call time out and kicked the FG, the damage had already been done to our chance to score the TD.

Good Game Blazers, I'll say this, lots of LSU fans have some serious questions about our Defense going forward. I'm not worried, you guys have a decent offense, and that Reaves kid is for real. Your quarterback is not bad either.

How about sending some of those 4 star bench players who are never ever going to see playing time again our way?

RE: GO UAB! BEAT LSU in Death Valley...
UAB ran into a buzz saw -- not just an SEC team but a top echelon SEC team - the kind that can play for the BCS NC this season. Too many people around here listened too much to what Paul Finebaum said about Les Miles as a coach. He looks to me like he has done very well in getting the best players, the best assistant coaches and bringing them together in a very good team.

From what I saw of the scores being posted around the nation, UAB was able to play LSU as well as most of the lower ranked teams played the best teams today. A lot of teams got taken to the woodshed today, and the margins of victory in many games around the nation were similar to ours. I am pleased that we seem right now to have gotten out with no season ending injuries to critical players. Has anyone heard anything about Hunter Mullins and why he was replaced during the game by Long?

We have an off week and then play two more OOC games before making our conference run. I hope we will benefit from all this experience and improve a lot.

Good night and God bless us, every one.

Great post! LSU is a very good team, that would embarrass a lot of CUSA teams. There is hope..........I actually think we have a better chance at stopping the triple-option (NW State), than we do another team with a good QB.

I would recommend not discussing the SEC or Paul Finebaum on this board anymore. Just because you like Bama doesn't mean you have to suck the SECs **** like everybody else in this state does.

If we will be defending against the triple option that stinks, because the defensive aspect that needs the most fixing is our pass coverage over the middle. I was glad to hear that addressed in the post-game show because that will really hurt us in conference play.
