You had to hire the same consulting agency Longwood hired or this is a heck of a coincidence. Dave Odom is the chief basketball adviser and it just so happens his son and former player pop up on your list.

I was kind of saying this softly during the Longwood process that Rusty LaRue would be a perfect fit for Campbell. He's young, energetic, very involved in the community, and a bit of a local legend in the Triangle.

He may get the Longwood job though, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out. We're expected to make a decision between LaRue, Jayson Gee, and Jim Corrigan this weekend.

I think LaRue and Winiecki would be good.

Those names fall in line with what I expected for CU. Outside of Odom, the names include individuals who are on staffs that our firmly on the hot seat.

LaRue coaches under Jeff Bzdelik who hasn't had a winning season yet at Wake Forest and got the dreaded "vote of confidence" from his AD and President after the season. My guess is Bzdelik is done after next season and LaRue can see the writing on the wall and needs to get out.

Clemson's head coach Brad Brownell has had a lot of success at Wright State and UNC Wilmington, but has struggled at Clemson. The Tigers were 13-18 this season and finished 11th in the ACC. There have been rumblings in Clemson, SC that this next year is make or break for Brownell who took a 20-win NCAA tournament team under Purnell and progressively gotten worse each year. I think Winieki is feeling the heat to get out as well.

While on the surface, the names seem good. The records are not. We shall see how it all turns out.

Rusty LaRue would be a perfect fit. He know's his x's and o's very well. He's also a great recruiter. Here's part of his bio from wakeforestsports.com:

LaRue's efforts in recruiting also helped lay the foundation for future success at Wake Forest, as the Deacons' 2010 recruiting class was ranked No. 6 in the country and the 2012 class was No. 21 according to ESPN. Played basketball and football at Wake Forest from 1993-96; played baseball at Wake in 1995; spent eight years playing professional basketball, including five seasons in the NBA; won an NBA Championship with the Chicago Bulls in 1998.

Whatever happen to the rumor about Rob Moxley from NC State? He'd be an amazing hire, here's part of his bio:

This year, Recruitdirt.com named him the top assistant coach in the ACC. In 2008, HoopScooponline.com ranked Moxley among the nation's top 100 assistant coaches. In 2007, rivals.com ranked him as one of the Top 25 recruiters in the country, and Basketball Times placed him 10th in its top 16 "Friends of Junior Colleges".

Anyone heard any rumors about them announcing the head coaching position?

Was told there won't be an announcement until after the Final Four.

RE: So where do we go from here?
A Dunn Daily Record article from last week indicated some interviews might take place in Atlanta this week and the top candidates from those would be invited for another interview in Buies Creek after the Final Four.

I will say his recruiting record appears impressive at first glance, but isn't it much easier to recruit when you're at your alma mater? You have much more to sell than someone who is new to the school.

In regard to the interviewing process, Roller apparently was supposed to speak to a group of students but had to cancel because he is conducting interviews at the Final Four in Atlanta as OrangeCamel just mentioned.

There have been speculations about who we think would be good. I wonder who is on the actual list. It does not seem like something. Roller would announce. So hopefully we get an answer soon.

I wouldn't consider his recruiting at Wake to be stellar. The talent level at Wake right now isn't all that great and the production on the court is even worse. I am not saying he isn't a viable candidate but he is on a staff that was very very close to losing their jobs this offseason and if they don't finish in the upper half of the ACC next year, will.

That sounds to me like we haven't made much progress at all. Interviewing at the Final Four is just taking advantage of having a meat market of candidates all in one place. If Roller isn't even ready to bring anyone on campus until after that, they are nowhere close to having a candidate.

Going back to Rob Moxley at NC State, HoopDirt is saying he is a hot name for UT Pan American. They're in the Great West, which is a joke of a conference and have an athletic dept budget that is half of Campbell's. That could mean he's not a very attractive candidate and just really wants to be a head coach, or that makes me think Campbell could very easily be in play if they are interested in him.

I agree about not even being close to having a candidate. I am waiting till after the final four just puts us behind the eight ball. I hope we find a hidden gem. Because I don't think we are going to pay to get a good coach. But you never know!

Maybe we're farther along than I thought. HoopDirt just posted these names - Mike Winiecki, Ryan Odom, and Rob Moxley. I like these options.

Good find those names have been brought up on the board before. I think they are going to the final four to see if they can sell anyone else on the head coaching position. If they can't I think they'll pick one of these guys. I think Winiecki played under Dick Tarrant at Richmond (the giant killer). Should be fun.

So where is Brooks Lee coaching now? He did a good job at UNCW as interim coach a few years back. Local boy, played at Campbell, mother still lives here, has been a good assistant. Heck he might not even be coaching any more but he popped into my head while reading this thread.

Demoted to Director of Ops at Wilmington. He is not head coach material at this point. CU doesn't need to hire anyone that another school wouldn't entertain as a possibility.

No need to hire a guy just because he has cause and 2-8 doesn't scream "good job" to me.

I am going to go ahead and tell you now that the new head coach won't be from any of the names we have heard. Let's go with Kevin McGeehan from Richmond. So, thoughts?

Yep. HoopDirt just posted the same. Said it could be announced today.

http://hoopdirt.com/blog/841999f7/campbell-rumor/

He's has success as an asst to Mooney at two different places. Not a flashy hire, but I'm good with it. Should be familiar with recruiting in the region and competing at the mid-major level.
