Denver, Belmont top MVC's replacement list for Creighton
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nca...r/1973937/
Quote:According to a person with direct knowledge of the league's thinking, Denver and Belmont would have significant support as candidates to replace Creighton, with Loyola (Ill.) also getting consideration and Oral Roberts looming as a longshot with less support.

Denver might provide some more flexibility for TV, as Denver allows for later start times (i.e. 9 PM CT).

I think the best choices would be Belmont, Oral Roberts and Denver. Each has issues though, Oral Roberts was recently in huge debt, Belmont has only a small history of success although very good and Denver has been D1 for 30 years and never been to the NCAA tournament. All are in nice large cities though.

Denver moved to D-I in 1997, that's 16 years

Yep. I think Denver was D1 from 1937-1979 or so, before returning in the late 90s.

Denver has the most long term potential of any of those programs listed, IMO.

If Denver has to add baseball and softball as a condition of joining the MVC, they'll do it in a heartbeat.
It's a great fit for Denver too.

I won't feel so bad if Denver joins the Missouri Valley.

Denver had been DI in basketball up until 1979, when it dropped to DII due primarily to its independent status.

MVC has more than enough teams in baseball and softball, don't they? It would save their teams money on travel if DU doesn’t add those sports.

Loyola has a national title and they are in Chicago. That seems like a good deal.

Loyola is going to be one of those chess pieces that will end up getting a lot of interest in the realignment of the midmajor conferences despite not being very good on the court. A Jesuit institution with solid academics in Chicago with some history (even of it was long in the past) would be on the radar of both the MVC and A-10 (if it chooses to backfill in the Midwest).

Is Creighton leaving in July of this year? If so, Denver's move to the Summit could last as long a TCU in the Big East.

DU does not have facilities for baseball and softball, nor does it have a space to build them.
