MyBB Illinois State vs. UAB - Game Thread
Illinois State is 4-0, with wins over UC Santa Barbara (181) 100-72, Drexel (61) 86-84 OT (road game), Delaware State (243) 87-48, and Fairleigh Dickinson (335) 91-58.

KenPom has Illinois State ranked 47th and UAB 141st. Creighton is ranked 24th.

KenPom has Illinois State tying for 2nd place in the MVC behind Creighton.

KenPom has Illinois State beating UAB 70-62. He only gives UAB a 21% chance of winning.

This is a huge game for UAB.

Illinois State is led by two seniors - Tyler Brown (6-4 185) and Jackie Carmichael (6-9 240). These two guys go to the free-throw line the vast majority of the time, and both shoot well over 70%. Brown takes the most 3-point shots and is hitting 41% of them, while Carmichael takes the most 2-pointers, hitting 63% of them.

We are going to have a very difficult time containing Carmichael.

The other two major contributors are Zeke Upshaw (6-6 215) and Geoffrey Allen (6-6 180). The final significant contributor is Jordan Threloff (6-10 255).

RE: Illinois State
You can't tell anything about how good they are by their previous scores.

I guess it will come down to matchups

RE: Illinois State
I think you'll see the relentless high pressured defense we saw first half at Creighton on Friday. You can blame last night's shortcomings to dead legs from Sunday's game. That and cold shooting. I expect a solid performance against this good team on a neutral court.

As Blazer fans, don't we expect this everytime?

If it is dead legs we are in trouble this weekend playing back to back.

As I said in the game thread, i think it was simply not taking your opponent seriously and looking forward to a trip to a nice locale to play BB

They are a big, strong, athletic team. Their leading scorer is 6'9 240, and they have a 6'10 250 pound center and 6'9 230 forward that see a lot of minutes.

I'd say winning at Drexel is impressive. They were predicted to win the CAA this year (yes, I realize VCU left). They returned all but one player from a team that went 29-7 and won the regular season conference title last season.

You're right. That is a good win

This game will be another fight of immense proportions. The MVC is no slouch by any stretch of the imagination. The "Angry Birds" of Illinois State will endeavor to defend their "nest" with all they've got.

Blazers, be prepared to bring the fight, because that's exactly what you're in store for.

The MVC is the 9th rated conference, while C-USA is 11th.

A couple interesting Redbird Blazer connections

Former UAB player Torrey Ward is an assistant coach at Illinois State.
current UAB assistant Jeff Wulbrun was an assistant coach at Illinois State from 1993-1997 and coached current Redbird coach Dan Muller at Illinois State. Muller who is in his first year at Illinois State has been an assistant at Vanderbilt, and coached current assistant director of Basketball Operations George Drake at Vanderbilt

RE: Illinois State
Our previous matchup with Illinois State (from the files of Today in Blazer History)

Quote:UAB vs. Illinois State – December 29, 1990
Also on this date, the Blazers played in the All-College tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Coach Gene Bartow had hoped to play Oklahoma in the finals, but UAB had been beaten in the first round by the home team, Tulsa, coached by JD Barnett. UAB was playing in the consolation game against the winless Illinois State, coached by Bob Bender.

UAB was somewhat lackluster in the first half. The Blazers led 22-15 with 11:01 to play in the first half, but the Redbirds went on a 11-2 run and took a 26-24 lead. Andy Kennedy then scored seven straight points to put UAB back on top. Illinois State outscored the Blazers 9-3 in the final 3:1l in the half and the score was tied at 34 at halftime. Andy Kennedy scored 16 of UAB’s 34 first half points and Stanley Jackson had 9 first half rebounds.

The Blazers broke away from the half time tie and led the entire second half. Illinois State managed to cut the lead to six points with 4:04 left in the game, but hit just two field goals the rest of the way. UAB won the game 71-60. Kennedy had 33 points in the game on 11 of 17 from the field. He had 27 points in the first game against Tulsa, so the future head coach of Ole Miss scored 60 points in two games.

Torrey Ward is one of my favorite UAB players.
