School Alliance can least afford to lose
I was thinking about it. Is there a school out there that if they left, the alliance would be extremely unstable to a point of possibly not happening.

I think to me, that school may be Southern Miss. To me, if USM left, what would be really left in football? ECU who at best recently has been a fringe top 25 school. Tulsa same thing(though they've done better than ECU). The others aren't even close. And- if the Big East were to take BOTH of them- the alliance would be gone.

I don't think the Big East has a school like that. Sure, losing Louisville would hurt, but they would be replacable.

Big East already replaced UL with Memphis - same school for all intents and purposes. Once UL makes it official, the BE will take Air Force from the Alliance. That one will sting I would think.

RE: School Alliance can least afford to lose
Based on consistency across the board, USM hands down. They won the CUSA this year in football, are in 1st place in basketball, and I expect thatbaseball will be at or close to the top when the season is over. I don't agree that it would make the Alliance unstable much less extremely unstable though. Too many teams out there to fill in gaps regardless of whether a USM or ECU leave. The new conference still moves forward.

If you lose UL, you can kiss any hopes of a great TV deal bye bye.

I think if USM and ECU left- what would the eastern part of the alliance have? Marshall, UAB, Tulane, Rice, and Tulsa(putting UTEP out west). I think if that happened, Sun Belt would become a very viable force for schools such as UAB, Tulane, and even Rice. Marshall would be scurrying to the MAC most likely. That would leave only Tulsa- and they would likely be heading to the MWC.

I'd say ECU. Without them you only have one team in the eastern time zone in Marshall. I wouldn't be shocked they ended up back in the mac if ECU is plucked up.

Big East would still have the basketball component even without Louisville. Football- what's going to get the tv contract is in some ways quanity over quality.

Nope, nope, nope. Let's say the BE took Tulane and Marshall instead of the USM and ECU. Would the rest run to the Sunbelt. Nope. UAB and Tulane might not have had the level of success as some other schools in CUSA, but they're still gonna look at the Sunbelt as a step down. So rather than take a step down, they'd rather other schools made the step UP. I.E. Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, Mid Tenn St, UTSA, Louisiana Tech, etc. Again, there are too many schools available for a CUSA or MWC team to backslide.

Air Force. Hands down the biggest draw and brand in the western conference as far as football is concerned.

While I can see that- I think USM is more vital because they are at the center of the division. If they leave, all of a sudden the Sun Belt is a MUCH larger factor.

Well...unless ECU gets plucked by the SEC 04-jawdrop, I don't see the BE,ACC calling anytime soon. 04-cheers

I just wonder if the Big East figured that out that USM and ECU were the schools that if they plucked them would make the alliance to the point where it maybe doesn't happen(thus the no competition for the TV package)- if they would look at inviting both.

The Big East already asked this question. The answer they came up with was Boise State. What do you think of their answer?

RE: School Alliance can least afford to lose
Losing anyone in The Alliance would not be that bad of a blow at this point because they could be replaced with someone who is arguably as good. That is me being honest. I guess ECU, Southern Miss, Fresno, Nevada, Air Force, Wyoming, and Hawaii would be bad losses because they actually have fans and normally finish above .500 in football.
If I was gonna have to pick one it would be Southern Miss. h]Thy do more than most BCS teams when it comes to football.
In basketball UNLV and New Mexico by a landslide but basketball is a lot easier to replace so I do not see losing them as being as bad as losing Southern Miss.

The answer wasn't just Boise... It was 5 schools(and now up to 6).

My thought is that if they lose 1-2 more(especially on the east side)- it gets to a point where it just doesn't happen.

See, I don't agree with that. USM is important to the Alliance, yes, but lynchpin / glue? It's the university presidents that appear to be in full unison and it's because of that that this new conference is proceeding forward. Unlike the BE that was on life support and currently has 7 teams going into next season if the others move early and one move by a Louisville at this point, could unhinge everything. I don't think that's the case with the Alliance. Now if the BE were to come back and take Air Force on one side and USM on the other, then I'd have to wonder if the ECU administration didn't want to think twice about starting an all Eastern conference and odds are that conference would still include UAB, Tulane, Marshall at a minimum. Then, yes, Tulsa, Rice would probably move to the MWC. But I still dont think anybody voluntarily jumps to the Sunbelt.

I think ECU is almost just as important. If ECU is gone, their eastern presence is gone. Sure, Marshall is around, but that woudl be only eastern time zone school.

I just think, if that happened- the presidents at the schools like Tulane and UAB would have to take a hard look at things. The Belt would be a LOT more regional for them.
