Alliance Candidates
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...basketball

According to multiple sources, the candidates include Charlotte (A-10), which is about to start playing football; Florida International (Sun Belt); North Texas (Sun Belt); UT-San Antonio (WAC); Louisiana Tech (WAC); Middle Tennessee State (Sun Belt); Western Kentucky (Sun Belt), if the Hilltoppers want to bump up the football program; Old Dominion (CAA), if the Monarchs bump up football as well; and UMass and Temple (both would be coming from MAC in football, A-10 in other sports).

The West doesn't need to be shored up, but there are obvious candidates -- New Mexico State, Utah State and San Jose State are all possibilities -- if this league wanted to raid the WAC.

WKU is already a FBS playing school.

RE: Alliance Candidates
I think the ones that I'd be looking at....
1> Middle Tennessee
2> Western Kentucky
3> Florida International
4> Old Dominion

I think the key quote though was the last paragraph:
The onus will be on New Mexico, UTEP, UAB, Southern Miss, Tulsa, Marshall and any newcomer to continue to raise their game and be top 30-40 programs on a consistent basis. Short of that, and this league won't have the necessary relevance to command the media rights dollars and/or the multiple bids that are necessary for the survival of a mega-conference.

Everyone talks so much about the media rights. The NCAA tournament though is huge...
A team making the tourney 1 time and losing in rd 1- they get the next 6 years about 250,000 * 6 1.5 million dollars.

That's why like last year- the Big East- getting 11 teams in- if all 11 had lost in rd 1- 2.75 milllion * 6 - would have been worth about 16.5 million. With all the wins, last year winds up being worth... 5.5 million * 6= 33 million dollars over the next 6 years. That's roughly if split evenly about 2 million per school. Add to that 5 other years and you see 8-10 million per year just in NCAA tourney money for the Big East. Alliance, if some of the programs falter, could really hurt in that money.

Katz is a basketball guy so is only looking at that perspective.

The only thing new here is the alliance must be willing to take a look at FCS programs with all the FCS names thrown out there like ODU and Charlotte.

It sounds like the MAC-12 has no interest in this merger. Some of the schools certainly have the markets and attendance to be considered but I think they are waiting to see how the power dynamic plays out among the non-AQ leagues.

The MAC by looking at the computer ratings may be a stronger football conference. It weakest program Akron just hired Terry Bowden as coach and that should make the conference stronger.

RE: Alliance Candidates
This article really just focuses on basketball...the issues in the East may have to be solved with a non football member. Old Dominion would do that. VCU could also do that. Temple and UMass were mentioned but I just dont see them leaving the A-10.

I believe FAU and FIU will both be added when the timing is right. It makes sense to add both if you are going to add one. They would be a football move, but they can be travel partners, rivals, and are located in great recruiting areas.

In terms of the basketball conference tourney, it will be in Vegas....where the WAC and MWC both hold their's now. Its a cheap flight to anywhere, a great place to hold a tourney, and have UNLV, Nevada, Fresno close by, not to mention not too far from New Mexico and UTEP.

I think ODU will be in for all sports. ODU is a great area and a potential home run quite frankly.

Just because they are looking at Charlotte and ODU doesnt mean they are looking at adding FCS football teams....they are most likely looking at them as non football members. The Charlotte fan base has been unhappy with the A-10 deal since the beginning. They would much rather play ECU, Marshall, UAB, Southern Miss, and Tulane than the Northeast schools.

I agree the NCAA tournament and the money it pumps into conference coffers is highly underrated.

The alliance should be focusing on upgrading basketball and east coast presence. From that standpoint only Temple, UMass, ODU, FIU are going to help the alliance out.

Beyond that I'm for adding North Texas in the Central pod, San Jose in the Pacific pod..I guess you could place UT-San Antonio in the Mountain pod.

I would avoid the smaller universities like La Tech or Western Kentucky.

Maybe eventually....but we at ECU know for a fact that ODU does not yet want to play ANY D-1 teams. We have tried to schedule them to come to Greenville. They will most likely come in 2014 or 2015, which would be the first time they would play a D-1 opponent. They want to get to a championship level and be able to grow their fan base before considering a move. I have heard from some donors that 2020 would be the earliest they would consider it. So for 2013 or 2014 you would be talking about non football membership....until maybe 2020. They do have a ton of potential because they are the main game in a big town and a great recruiting area. Its about 2 hr or so drive from ECU.

I am pretty sure there isn't going to be non-football members in the alliance.

ODU already averages 20,000 after only a couple years of football and is talk about going to 35-40k real soon. ODU has good basketball but the draw for the alliance is more in football.

Charlotte is only building a 15k stadium and is in the same state as East Carolina so I don't know if adding another North Carolina school is a good idea. I think Charlotte could be in the alliance 5 years down the road when ECU leaves but not now.

I think east coast teams will be added, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if non-FB schools are added. There are not a ton of great east coast FB teams to add, but there are a bunch of schools without FBS football who would be very appealing in the east. Some like ODU and Charlotte also have the potential to be quality FBS football teams down the road. I think baring a late change of heart by the Big East Temple is going to join FB only. Add one of the F_U's and then you have a decent collection of east coast schools to start with. Maybe if we were willing to go with non-FB schools we could add enough to entice Temple to join all sports. That could be what the talk of potentially 30 teams is referring to.

Wichita State, Creighton, Gonzaga, St. Mary's etc. should all be highly pursued if we are considering non-football schools to balance out Hawaii and Temple.

I hadn't heard previously that non-football additions would be considered, but if it's true, b0ndsj0ns is right that it would explain the comment about expansion to as many as 30. And things could get REAL interesting.

Our staff was also able to speak directly with a Conference USA source who despite speculation and other reports, had some very positive things to say about UTSA and the programs chances of being one of the programs to be added to the new conference, "The ten programs that were originally on the radar are still being considered and are pretty even. UTSA does have definite strengths and strong conversations have occurred. "They may not have a longtime rival, but UTSA showed strength in their numbers with the attendance this past season, along with engaged fans, that is a definite positive as long as they keep it," said the un-named source. Four of those ten programs under consideration were confirmed by the source are UTSA, FIU, UNT and La. Tech.

30 teams playing for only one automatic bid to NCAA tournaments in basketball and other sports? Makes no sense.

Not all 30 are basketball... the idea was (at least how i read it), some would be FB-only, some would be BB-only.

16 All sports
8 FB only
8 BB/olympic only

But I may have misread the entire theory., but anyway you look at it, it'd still be VERRY confusing at that point.
