RE: Sun Belt / WAC Alliance
I cannot get over the fact that there are multiple people saying we shouldn't hire Benson because he tried to "harm the Sun Belt". There are some very legitimate reasons not to hire the man, I will grant you that, but this talk of him trying to harm or break up the Sun Belt is just childish. You make it sound like he targeted the Sun Belt vindictively when all he was doing was trying to replace schools that had left. I'd be more concerned about his ability to be a commissioner had he not tried to attract schools from the only other FBS conference that made any sense to contact. Where was he going to go for replacements? The PAC 12? We all talk about how if we're going to expand we need to stay away from going the FCS route, but now you're condemning this guy for trying to improve his conference with existing FBS programs? Seriously?

Man is the WAC desperate to gt UNT in their conference. They're wanted more than the hot chick at a bar at closing time. Seriously, there's no reason for us to take San Jose, Idaho, and Utah state. Point of all of this, even with 2 defections, we're still in the much stronger position. Simply put, the ball is in La Tech's court for the billionth time. You're not going to CUSA, and you better make it very worth it for us to take you back, otherwise, we have 2 teams in TSU and UTSA who seem very eager to fill roles in the conference.

This jack wagon tried to kill the MWC with the President of Utah State and had it all blowup when they were out foxed by the MWC. To me, this along with the fact that after the MWC practically destroyed the WAC he attempted to harm the SBC causes me to say heck no to Benson. Get someone new with excitement and vigor. Hell, why not bring someone in from collegiate programming at ESPN or Fox to run the conference. They will know scheduling, marketing, and many of the players in college football already. Since the business has become all about television, it appears that this will be a no brainer.

Regardless of your feelings, if someone other than Karl Benson is the new commissioner, it'll be a major story.

It's going to happen, barring something strange.

If that is the case, this will be further evidence that the SBC has surpassed the WAC. Next target has to be the MAC.

Meh...I don't know about that. I'm not saying there's no truth to what you're saying, but I think the move would be more about the fact that the relationship has soured on both sides with Benson and the WAC and even more so about stability.

The problem is, it's not like it's going to be a national story, I mean it will probably be on the ESPN.com sidebar for a day or two, but no one is really going to take notice and if you try to tell a WAC fan that us taking their commissioner is prove of us surpassing them they'll just laugh and tell you they were thrilled to be rid of him.

Again, not saying you're wrong, simply stating that few will take notice and the WAC fans won't believe it.

True, but why did he have to come calling to the SBC? Because he f'd his conference up by trying to destroy the MWC and got his lunch handed to him. Then, to keep things together he tried to harm the SBC. The cause and effect here is not like the SEC, PAC 12 or Big 10 trying to enhance strictly to maximize value. Instead, here it was to try to survive after enormously f'n up.

I don't think it's about UNT. Look at what CUSA and the MWC are doing. They are basically saying that neither conference has enough value to garner any revenue, but maybe if they aligned with one another, they may generate some interest that may increase revenue a little bit.

I think if they have done the studies and TV execs have said that this would create more interest and they would reward the alliance with a better TV deal than either conference could warrant on their own, then it is something the Sun Belt and WAC should also look into since we are in the same predicament as they are in.

That's not exactly true, the MWC struck first blood by taking Boise and the were already in negotiation with Nevada, Fresno, and Hawaii when Benson tried to make the backdoor deal. So even had he not tried to make that deal that blew up in his face, he would have still been looking for new members.

And even still, how does that change the fact that he was looking to the Sun Belt for programs because it was the only realistic place to look before FCS?

Blaming him for the WAC falling apart is one thing(I don't agree, but don't think it's a totally unreasonable thought)being upset that invited Sun Belt schools is completely unreasonable.

Benson's plan was genius. And it would have worked if Fresno and Nevada wouldn't have broken their covenant with him. His fault was believing they were honorable people.

Not true. BYU wanted out of the MWC. They approached Benson about joining the WAC in all sports but football. Benson asked all the WAC schools to sign a pact that if he allowed BYU to join, that no one would leave the WAC for the MWC (because he knew the MWC would do what they did... invite Fresno and Nevada). Everyone signed the agreement and even said if they broke the agreement they would have to pay $5 Million. So Benson announces BYU is joining the WAC. Then the MWC turns around and invites Fresno and Nevada and they immediately say, "Screw you Karl, we're going to the MWC." Stabbed him in the back and made him look stupid.

Well even if they weren't already "in negotiation" you just admitted yourself that Benson knew the invites were going to come. The timeline is not the important thing to take away from the post, the important thing is, Benson would have likely been looking to take schools from the Sun Belt regardless, even if it was just looking for one replacement for Boise.

At the end of the day, what the fans want falls way behind what the administration wants...unless you're T. Boone Pickens. What the AD wants can be outranked by the school's president, but you can only hope they're of a similar mindset. The WAC was and continues to be a sinking ship, can you really blame their admins for wanting to cut bait and try a new fishin' hole?

But the WAC is no different than any conference in that its members wanted to join higher profile conferences. If a SBC team was invited to improve itself, it would also jump on the opportunity. And if several of them were asked to leave in a short period of time, the SBC too would sink. That's just life at the bottom of the totem pole.

Actually, he believed if BYU came to the WAC in all sports but football, then SD State would follow. He wanted to keep the WAC teams solid to the WAC in hopes of eventually bringing all MWC teams over to the WAC. He knew the MWC would retaliate the BYU move by trying to blow up the WAC.... so that's why he had everyone sign the pact before he accepted BYU.

I don't think there were any plans to replace only Boise. I can't remember that being talked about.

He did just recently invite Nevada, Fresno, and Hawaii back to the WAC since the MWC has blown up now too. They declined.

I see it differently. He was aggressive and took a chance that could have increased his Conference's prestige. But, when ya gamble...sometimes ya lose. After that occured events transpired that he had little control over because frankly, the MWC is a much better league than the WAC.

I respect Benson for being bold, he did what a good commissioner should do. It backfired, but had it not the WAC would be in great shape now. When is the last time Waters did ANYTHING to that level to try and grow our brand?

If we get Benson I think the Conference will come out ahead. He is aggressive and obviously knows a thing or two about how to advance a league. On top of that, he now has experience with losing a risky gamble so he's less likely to repeat his previous mistake.

for those of you who keep mentioning his attempts to raid the Belt, c'mon man. I'm with MTPiKapp 100% on this one. Every league does this, it was the logical move on Benson's part. Stop trying to make it personal, he was trying to strengthen the much weakened WAC and I don't blame him for doing so. The Sun Belt has surpassed the WAC now, so If he becomes our Commissioner he'll be doing the same for us, and I expect it to have positive results.

Benson is an idiot and he should retire . . he has done enough damage.

Tech fans have come a long way. Apparently they have realized they cant be independent in football...and are beginning to understand CUSA doesnt want them.

If only now we could get them to understand we aint letting them bring San Jose, Idaho, NMSU, and Utah State (Not even going to get into Seattle and Denver) to the conference with them. If we let them bring friends, those friends will be from Texas.

We are moving through the final stages of grief... leaving depression and entering acceptance. 04-cheers

The WAC/belt (Welt/SAC) is the worst of both worlds for Tech. I'd rather be in a 12 team Belt.

If you guys were #11, who would you recommend as the 12th team?

Then, to keep things together he tried to harm the SBC. The cause and effect here is not like the SEC, PAC 12 or Big 10 trying to enhance strictly to maximize value. Instead, here it was to try to survive after enormously f'n up.

I see it like this: It's ok to gambling with your money, but don't mortgage my house and add it to the pot...just because you can gamble doesn't make you good at it.
