Sun Belt / WAC Alliance
Let's assume CUSA takes Temple and FIU. Karl Benson becomes the new Sun Belt Commissioner. I'm thinking the natural move is to combine the Sun Belt and the WAC like this:
West
La Tech
North Texas
New Mexico St
Utah St
San Jose St
Idaho
Texas St
UT- San Antonio
East
Arkansas St
Western Kentucky
Troy
Middle Tennessee
South Alabama
Florida Atlantic
UL Lafayette
UL Monroe
Sound reasonable?

RE: Sun Belt / WAC Alliance
I wouldn't object to this assuming a couple of things.
#1 Both "divisions" retain thier conferences' autobid to the NCAA basketball tournament and both get to host thier own conference tournaments.
#2 There isn't a lot of cross divisional play. I have no desire to travel to New Mexico St. or San Jose.
In that case there would be no change except that we would play a championship game against them in football.

I'm sure they would just use the research by the MWC/CUSA alliance and have the same terms.

You might get a deal with ESPN that pays something. Maybe.

Oh thank god for the WAC...
Please, your tv deal won't be any better than ours once the dust settles. You make a fair point that we might get a better TV deal than we'd get separately, but don't make it sound like it's all about the WAC...

RE: Sun Belt / WAC Alliance
If the SBC were to enter into an alliance, I would prefer SBC/MAC as the population density is greater in the SBC/MAC geographic area than it is in the SBC/WAC geographic area.
Top teams in the SBC allied with the top teams in the MAC would be a pretty strong group.
The alliance championship game could be the Blue/Gray Game, the Yankee/Rebel Shootout, or even the Carpetbagger Bowl . .
Go stAte . . Go SBC !!

Not crazy about the names, not for any PC reasons, but because I just don't think it would be that good of a name considering the South would be the victorious side more often than not

No.
First, Benson will not be the new Sun Belt commissioner. I can understand you guys wanting to get rid of him, but if he were to become the new Sun Belt commissioner, I think more then a few programs would break away and form a new conference.
Even if the Sun Belt loses a program, we won't need teams from the WAC. The Sun Belt would have 9 teams for football, and that would work very well. If LA Tech wants to join, get over your problem with Monroe and make a proposal to the Sun Belt. As long as the Sun Belt has at least 8 teams, I don't think there is any possibility of a Sun Belt/WAC alliance.
Most of the Eastern Belt teams have no interest in adding WAC teams far out West. Should C-USA take more then two Sun Belt program, a few Eastern WAC teams could be considered, and Belt might rethink adding an FCS program in the East. I just can't see a reason for the Sun Belt to merge with what is left of the WAC. That wouldn't be financially smart for the Sun Belt.
I miss football season...

I'm not pushing this... I just thinking this is what will happen. If it makes sense for the MWC/CUSA, it should make sense for MWC lite / CUSA lite too.

I absolutely believe that Benson is a candidate and I have no idea what Side Show Joe is talking about saying that if Benson is named commissioner that some schools will look to form a new conference. I have no idea whether or not he'll actually be picked, but to suggest it would cause schools to leave the conference is laughable. Leave the Sun Belt and form a new conference with whom?

This is old and stale info. The SBC just redid its contract with ESPN.

I never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the shed but perhaps you can enlighten me. How does a 2008 report that shows no pay for games but also no expenditures and a comment that states "It isn’t clear if the league even receives any meaningful compensation for its product" equal the SBC paying to have ESPN broadcast our games?
