The good 'ol boys from UAT would undermine any attempt. Too much sponsorship money to lose.

They list proximity to Tuscaloosa like it's a good thing. That list is masturbatory anyway. If there is NFL expansion, next team is going to LA without question. And if you think getting approval for a stadium for UAB is tough, try getting a new stadium for a pro football team which actually does have a track record here.

Frankly, I got tired of playing the ol' pro football team thing after the Birmingham Fire.

I haven't come close to going to any game locally since. That includes the cudas, steeldogs, & any other rag tag organization.

The NFL wouldn't fly here because #1 There wouldn't be enough corporate money involved & #2 nobody could afford the ticket prices. & most importantly #3 It would divert attention from certain holy college football programs.

That includes UAB, so I say no to the NFL as well.

I don't believe Birmingham would support an NFL, MLB, or NBA team.

We should use the same rules that the BOT appears to be placing on us.

The community needs to show that it would support minor league teams before it gets a major league team.

(& we all know that minor league teams aren't going to draw enough community support to do this)

The NFL doesn't give a flying you know what about the University of Alabama football team. If Birmingham could support a team and have it be profitable, the NFL would move there immediately. College football has rabid fan bases in very few areas. We just happen to be in one of these areas. Don't let that twist your view of how powerful the NFL is. Goodell could tell Obama he wanted to take a sh!t on the White House lawn or he'd cancel the NFL season, and Obama would have to send somebody out there with a pooper scooper or risk ticking off a large segment of voters.

I've seen multiple reports on this over the years, and the truth is Birmingham would struggle with an NFL team because of its size. The college football thing definitely doesn't help this. All the studies I have read seem to indicate a professional baseball team may succeed in Birmingham, but the other pro sports would likely struggle. I don't know who would want to buy an NFL franchise and put it in Birmingham, because it would be a huge risk. I'm not saying it couldn't work, because every study in history has not been correct, but I'd be pretty shocked if it did.

As ridiculous as it sounds, there are some people for that university that would want all of their other programs to go to crap as long as their football program receives every last penny that it can get in order to win.

I look at it from the point of view that having a good football program helps the other programs.

I agree. But these are probably also the idiots who probably don't care if the guys are going to class, or taking a class that will benefit them, and think that college athletics is a business. The problem is too many people from these schools see college athletics as business, when that was never the intent of forming teams. That is my favorite argument the UAT fans on AL.com have about UAB. But you are losing money, blah, blah. Yes we are, so are most college football teams. It isn't a business, it is an investment in the campus. Are rec centers created to turn huge profits? Dorms? Libraries? Any academic building? The University Center? Frat/Sorority Houses? If one thing is a business, shouldn't they all be?

They've already done that back in the early 70's (remember that whenever you're watching a Tampa Bay Buccaneers game)..I've not read the online list for this topic yet, but if Birmingham is on it, disregard that completely.

That ship has sailed, never, ever to return. We've no one to blame but ourselves and our stumbling, bumbling, fumbling, impotent leaders. The NFL will put a franchise in Pierre, SD, before they will Birmingham.

The will put one in Mexico City before too long. The future will be in Mexico and Europe most likely Great Brittan. I suspect within the next 20 years there will be an international division.

I'd be pretty surprised. I doubt they want another stadium at extreme elevations, and with the pollution there that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Some of the cities on this list are 03-lmfao, to include, I'm sorry to say, Birmingham. We had our chance and blew it numerous times, fearful of offending the self-appointed "Gridiron Gods" in this state. The last legitimate chance died with the Stallions & the USFL, there were at least 5 or 6 teams in that league that could have more than held their own in the National Football League, and the Stallions was one of them.

IMO, even though I'm putting an asterisk by the name of Jackson, MS. (there was a group of investors there a good while back that was making a serious pitch at purchasing the New Orleans Saints and moving them there), IMO, the only legitimate candidates on this list are: Omaha, Oklahoma City, Louisville, San Antonio, and Portland.

Columbus, Ohio? Nothing against the city, great place, been there a number of times and sort of like it (even though I nearly died there twice), but the state of Ohio already has 2 NFL teams, the same argument was made against the state of Tennessee when Memphis was once considered a front runner for an NFL team, but once Nashville got the nod somehow ahead of them, Memphis for some reason, was off the NFL "radar."

I personally would like to see expansion in cities that have at least one professional team in another league of some kind and is warmly embraced and supported in that community, like the Trail Blazers are in Portland (try and take that franchise away from that city and watch what happens!) The Hurricanes in Raleigh, the Jazz in Salt Lake City, the Kings in Sacramento or the Thunder in Oklahoma City, if our city had leadership and populace mindsets like these places, we'd have at least one major league team of our own to enjoy along with our beloved Blazers by now.

Or cities like ours, that have nothing along the lines of true professional sports to cheer for, rally around as a city and call our own, like Louisville, they used to have an ABA team and supported it well. Surprised that they don't have anything yet, but I do know it hasn't been from lack of trying and with Papa John's HQ being there, and them being the official sponsor of the NFL, who knows? Louisville could very well break through and get an an NFL expansion team if a serious push was made there, but the league has this man-crush on Los Angeles, for some reason. But when it comes to something this big, Birmingham's just whistlin' dixie now. There's an 'elephant' in the room (if you know what I mean), and all our city officials have done for years is kiss up to it...& can't get it to leave, it's sitting on this city and refuses to get up. And we don't have what it takes to get it off of our backs.

Toronto? Nothing personal, but **** no!!! They're trying to lure the Bills away from Buffalo. If I know that fan base like I think they do, there'd better be riot squads in place on the streets of Buffalo, because after what happened to them with their former NBA team (the Braves), no way in **** are they going to stand still for someone stealing the Bills from them. This would devastate that city, as would New Orleans if the Saints go marching out.

Far as Birmingham's concerned? Sure, I'd love to have more in this regard, been wanting for as long as I've lived here (a very long time)but I'm grateful for UAB athletics & will root for what I got, to some degree, they've filled the void as best as they could, but, time is not on my side waiting on Birmingham to join the ranks of major league cities, we had our chances to get real pro teams and blew every single one of them, allowing outside forces within this state to dictate agenda, **** them - Go Blazers!!! We that live in this area need to get behind them in record numbers, or they'll be going the way of the Stallions, too.

Deserving a team certainly doesn't mean getting a team. Hell will freeze over at least twice before the NFL ever allows a franchise to locate in Las Vegas.

You are right but that is a special case. The League has to at least maintain the appearances.

RE: 12 Cities That Deserve an NFL Expansion Team
It will always be problematic as to whether B'ham might have supported an NFL team. As far as ticket sales go, I can just imagine the look of incredulity on any NFL owner's face when told that if they want to use Legion Field, they cannot force over 5,000 ticket purchasers to buy in advance of 7 days before each home game because they hold Stadium Certificates that are good forever. These cover 2,000 50 yd line seats on both sides (sec 10 &11 on the west side and the corresponding two sections on the east side) plus the Gold Seats under the press box. Neither the BBVA Bowl nor UAB can sell those tickets either until the week of individual home games.

One reason I hoped we would build the MPF at the BJCC was to get out from under these "SCs" that cover any football game at Legion Field forever. If you doubt it, take cash money to the Bartow ticket office this spring or summer and demand seats in those three preserves.

According to the Park & Rec Board, there are 26,000 TOTAL seats (BOTH SIDES) between the goal lines at Legion Field with all the rest either in the endzones or in the areas now covered by tarps. That means 1/5 (20%) of the seats along the 100 yard playing field are reserved forever for these "SC" holders in PERPETUITY for ANY football game EVER played there. I will always believe this arrangement is the MAIN reason for the NFL never giving B'ham a second thought. It also figured in why Bama moved out all SEC games and most others after the TIDE PRIDE program was initiated.
