Not even as a technicality for those who live on the East Coast.

Well it certainly makes the omissions of Oklahoma State and Notre Dame that much more inexplicable.

RE: Pac 12 blues
The PAC historically and sporadically is a great conference. Using current members... Since 1990 (picked a random year)...

Compare to other power 5 conferences and only the XII is worse using current members.

PAC: b-ball UCLA, Arizona; fball Colorado, Washington, USC
XII: b-ball Kansas; fball Oklahoma, Texas
SEC: b-ball Arkansas, Kentucky x3, Florida x2; fball LSU x2, Auburn, Alabama x6, Tennessee, Florida x3
ACC: bball Syracuse, Louisville, Duke x5, North Carolina x4; fball Miami x2, Florida St x3, Georgia Tech, Clemson
B1G: b-ball Michigan St, Maryland; fball Nebraska x3, Michigan, Ohio St x2

The ACC and SEC are far and away better. The B1G falls in the middle with the PAC and XII lagging back.

Why is it sad? It happens almost every year. Good luck finding a year since the Big East became the C-7 that they haven’t been worse then the MWC. The Big East has painted themselves into a narrow niche of the “catholic conference” and therefore have a small but dedicated base from which they draw. They are great for Fox2 but will never be a national brand people care about.

It's an illustration of the power of the established basketball network. Fox is not known for college basketball. CBS is.

Both games were on over-the-air TV, but CBS had been showing college hoops all day, giving it a lead-in.

More casual fans go to ESPN or CBS for college basketball. A person has to be a committed Big East fan to find their games on Fox. A person running a TV in a bar or restaurant is more likely to park their TV on ESPN or CBS than Fox during basketball season.

The same thing happens in college football. Games on ESPN networks generally outrate games on Fox networks.

In the meantime, Fox has given the Big East a great financial deal. They'll take the money and run.

It has nothing to do with the network. Fox does great for other sports. The Big East and PAC-12 have a similar problem, very few people have an affinity with their schools.

In the PAC-12’s case, the schools have become too elite in their biggest and most important state and even good students can’t get in CA PAC-12 schools. You can’t send rejection letters to the majority of the state and have them follow your sports teams. Every other conference has a school in the state that accepts 50% of its applicants or greater for undergraduate. Sure they have a Northwestern or Duke but in the case of the PAC-12 every school in CA has the selectivity of Nothwestern, Duke and Vanderbilt. The PAC-12 is the Ivies of the West and their viewership reflects it.

The Big East has a similar problem of breaking out of their narrow niche.

Both conferences will find they fail long term in TV money.

Considering they play in a nonESPN network, having 1.5 million people watch the final is remarkable. As for the Pac-12, they’ll always struggle in getting casual viewers outside the West Coast. Even in their footprint, they compete against different entertainment options in an area known for its outdoor activities. Unless half of the schools alumni and fan base move to the East Coast, not much will change on their end.

Yes, a far better indicator of conference strength and popularity is tournament attendance.

Big East sold out three sessions at MSG, there were probably more fans at the Big East final than attended the AAC tournament in its entirety.

Baloney. Tournament attendance shows core fan strength and the Big East does well because they have a very strong identity and following within their niche. The problem for the Big East is growing out of that niche.

FOX may do great with other sports, but in college athletics, FOX numbers trail those for ABC/ESPN, so adjustments have to be made for that.

I mean, does anyone seriously think that New Mexico vs San Diego State has more that twice as much brand appeal than Arizona vs USC?

Of course not, the numbers reflect the networks.

I think the network has some impact but the PAC-12 has an major affinity problem in CA that is a bigger factor.

RE: Pac 12 blues
Once again, the Pac-12 is not like the other P5 conferences. If you never lived in the West Coast, it’s really hard to understand the culture there. Let’s put it this way, it’s Miami but in a bigger scale. People tend to be outdoors out there and they somehow support Olympic sports well. Unlike the Northeast and Midwest where being outdoors suck in the winter and the South where people tend to support State U over pro sports, the Pac-12 has to compete with multiple entertainment options. Another point is that at least in L.A., it’s usuakky a “let’s show up in the second quarter and leave after the 3rd quarter” type of crowd.

I do. Arizona sure. Blue blood Western school. But USC...basketball? I’ll take UNM and SDSU any day.
I’ll give you a moment to look up past results and attendance numbers on USC.

USC has the football brand name so that by itself will get people’s attention. UNM still has a name but SDSU was a glorified SJSU before Fisher took over.

San Diego State has never been that bad. SJSU is only a step above Chicago State.
