Northeastern was the biggest RPI snub (55 — did not realize they were so high)

They are certainly overvalued by RPI Barely 100 in kenpom

Quite often they get roped into being the visiting teams (the teams that visit P5 schools for 2 games before the P5 teams go somewhere nice) for Gazelle Group early season MTEs.

RE: NIT?
The predictable result of beating no one the entire season.

Nothing sums up how truly pathetic our schedule was this year more than winning 25 games and not even being able to squeak into the nit.

And yet some of our fanbase actually think jones did a good job this year???

Hilariously clueless.

We are 3rd highest Ken Pom team to not get in NIT. Maryland, Georgia (declined), and us. 4 spots below Utah, who is a 2 seed. We were ahead of BYu, BC, Oregon, Stanford (3---WTF), and Temple.

We beat no one and all of those teams at least beat someone decent and the committee knew it.

We didn't earn a damn thing, stop whining.

Clearly should have received an at-large. They can make a powerful statement against Louisville.

RE: NIT?
I watched Ashville take USC to double overtime last night, and they (Ashville) should have won in the first overtime. Ashville looked every bit as good as a Pac 12 team, yet the patch on their jersey automatically disqualifies them from any serious consideration for at-large post-season play. They wouldn't even have been selected for the NIT if they hadn't won their regular season conference.

The arrogance of the P5 and their shills is mind-blowing. There are so many undeserving P5 teams in the NCAA field simply because of their conference affiliation. I know this isn't news to anyone, but it galls me so much. Money and greed are ruining the beauty of college sports. I'm convinced the more they stack the deck against Mid-Majors, the more folks will be turned off. The casual fan wants to see the Cinderella story. That's what makes the tournament compelling. Who doesn't remember Valpo's last second half court shot, or Mason's run to the Final 4? The networks and the P5 Cabal will squeeze every last nickel out of America until there are no regular fans left. They'll end up with nothing more than a crappy professional league that nobody cares about.

The alumni from the P5 schools will care, and the casual fan who has no collegiate loyalty will still care. But otherwise, I agree with your post 100%.

I don't disagree with the thrust of your premise that it's harder and harder for a mid-major to distinguish themselves in the eyes of the powers that be (though I think UNCA wouldn't have deserved an NIT bid on their own merits in a season when Maryland and ODU were left on the sidelines, last night's performance notwithstanding).

That said, I think there's something to be said for motivation. UNCA as the spunky low-major has a lot more to prove than a USC that expected an NCAA bid this season and had to settle for the NIT. That's why you never see a 16 beating a 1 in the NCAAs, but it's not that uncommon for an 8 to beat a 1 in the NIT. The 8 wants to make a splash on national TV. The 1 wants to go home and watch the for-real tournament that they thought they were playing in a week ago.

Last year, for example, Cal State-Fullerton not only beat Cal as an 8 seed, they reached the final four in a region in which sixth-seeded UT Arlington made the final. Wagner beat St. Bonaventure as an 8 in 2016. South Dakota State beat Colorado State in 2015. Robert Morris beat St. John's in 2014 and, famously, Kentucky in 2013. Before this season, you had to go back to 2011 to find an NIT in which all four 1s won their opener.

Which doesn't take away from their wins, or UNCA's near-miss last night, it just provides some context.

The problem is that the bar keeps moving in a direction that makes it harder and harder to justify a mid major getting a bid. The teams are not getting worse, the selection criteria are just getting more rigid and data driven. As long as that is the case, there will be no case to be made within the selection framework for mid majors to get into the tournament. We need to add more subjectivity back to the process.
