What are the mid-majors to do?
With the selection committee showing an increasing level of favoritism towards the major conferences and at-large bids among the mid-majors being increasingly difficult to come by what are the midmajors who value basketball to do?

Wichita St has fled to the AAC. Gonzaga seems poised to run to the MWC for sanctuary (and are praying BYU will follow).

Is it time for the best of those left behind to try to band together into a new league to try and hang on?

Mark Adams, who covers a lot of games on ESPN 3, has made a suggestion in the past that the stronger mid-majors form an out of conference scheduling alliance. He further suggests these schools avoid the Blue Blood basketball programs and selectively attack the lower tier P5 schools whom they are capable of beating; thus improving their RPI and having the head to head victory over the lower tier P5 schools. He believes this is a recipe for a midmajor to wrestle a bid away from a "lesser" P5 school. Easier said that done I know.

RE: What are the mid-majors to do?
The selection committee pre-ordained 1(!) mid major bid this year. Jumped to 3 because Nevada and RI lost.

A10 ranked 11th and got 3 in - the only league immune. Other leagues need to look at what the A10 does - noncon scheduling and in-conference scheduling. Ie. expand large with quality and make sure your top teams only play bottom feeders once. And put in a scheduling mandate.

I'm totally with you on the second part. As for the first, wouldn't that potentially set schools up to knock eachother out?

RE: What are the mid-majors to do?
Well, putting the A10 into proper context, they tend to challenge themselves quite well, and what propels them in the rankings are more than a few of the programs picking up good wins in the non-conference, and then beating the snot out of each other within the conference. But, yeah, most programs go out and schedule majors, be it 1-1 or just making the trip out and not expecting a return.

To me, they do what EVERYONE should be doing. And what burns me is how many major conference programs refuse to challenge themselves in the non-conference, and then expect the parity in the league to jack their numbers up for inclusion into a tournament. Hey, they get their good wins...why care where they get them? And the committee rewards that...heck, only three of the seven Big XII bids went to teams with NC-SOS within the top 100. The other four...didn't bother. One's a three seed.

Non-majors should work on building in gaps in their schedule to schedule impromptu games with others who might boost their metrics. Yeah, Bracketbusters without the television component if needed.

That's almost exactly what MT did. Played a H&H with FGCU this season (who turned out to no be that great), annual games with Murray St., Belmont. Then played Vandy, Ole Miss, USC, Auburn & Miami. Ended with an RPI of 33.

Middle Tennessee did what they were asked to do and still got screwed. I have no sympathy for St. Mary’s though.

If the stronger mid-majors create an opening in the blue blood schedules, the blue bloods are going to fill the hole which is the best RPI available, That is those lower P5 schools that the mid- majors want. Guess who is going to win that battle...

Oh stop it, the A-10 was garbage this year behind the top two. Saint Bonaventure won the games they needed to and still barely made the field. Davidson came on late but had no shot at an at-large.

What non-traditional major conferences need to do is just win the games they should, period.

Middle Tennessee also had some not-so-great losses and a few good wins.

Middle Tennessee choked. They didn't even need to rely on the at-large bid anyways.

RE: What are the mid-majors to do?
No team that does not have over a .500 in conference record should be invited to the ncaa. ACC 9 teams in BS. SEC 8 teams
1.9 million for each team. This is all nonsense. Lunardi has the stats.
When a at larage mid major is invited they win by a much higer % than a middle of the pack p5 team

This is just the bias we all deal with in football

Why not? So the committee can put in relatively weak teams that can't even dominate their own weak conferences? Teams that can't even reach their own conference's tournament final?

Judge teams on what they've done.

RE: What are the mid-majors to do?
no room at NIT, 15 P6 bids, 12 auto bids
build up CIT, there 34 schools sitting at home with 20 wins
24 mid-majors are home, 11 with 20 wins

Athlon Invittational tournment [48 schools]
FF wkend in Nashville, games already on TV
Memphis is 20 seed, UNLV would be 32 seed

break even to start, build up from there

If they expand the tournament field to 128 perhaps the committee will let 3 or 4 more mid majors in.

They were 4-6 vs RPI top 100 teams. 1-4 of that being OOC. It's great they play those good games- but you have to you know actually win those games.

Yeah, if they don't go to 128, I wish they'd go back to 64. I like balance.
