National impact:

UND has had three personnel with long time NBA coaching stints:

Phil Jackson, possibly the most notable coach ever
Bill Fitch, who had a long NBA career as head coach
Jimmie Rodgers, who had also had a longterm NBA coachng career
All three were at UND at the same time

Current DI coaches:

Jacobson at UNI and McDermott at Creighton

SDSU:

Nagy at Wright State

UND had 8 elite eight DII appearances
SDSU had five elite eight DII appearances, with one title

UND would be taken out by Walt Frasier-led SIU teams, Ark St, Old Dominion, La Tech and Chattanooga teams.
SDSU would beat Wittenberg for its sole DII championship but get taken to the cleaners routinely by Metro State.

Yeah, SDSU has much more national impact says no mbb fan ever but those who graduated from SDSU.

I just love the people who argue over sports tradition. It's such a ridiculous argument. That said, winning a championship is significantly more important than making appearances. Also, D1 success is even more important than anything that occurs in D2.

EVERYONE should say that SDSU has a better basketball tradition than UND if nothing more than the fact that they actually won something. Outside of hockey UND loves their participation trophies.

From that post, SiouxFanUNDFan:

UND is joining the Summit and they actually dropped baseball expressly to make expansion needed.

The Summit will become a power league rivaling the MAC and MVC.

Might be a good time for me to resume my campaigning for Arkansas Tech. (Actually all of us Wonder Boy fanatics here should be banding together)

NoDak has his conferences mixed up

Big Sky and Summit Challenge for the next four years
http://www.kvrr.com/2017/11/27/und-ndsu-...ge-series/

Quote:Each school will play one home game and one road contest against separate schools from the other league during each of the four seasons. Big Sky schools participating are Montana State, Montana, Idaho and Eastern Washington. The Summit League is represented by North Dakota State, North Dakota, Omaha and South Dakota State.

The full game schedule is listed in this article:
https://gobison.com/news/2017/11/27/ndsu...ath=mbball

The rationale is not football but adding an additional home game (biggest revenue source after road games against majors) for schools
Quote:"This is a great opportunity for us to secure some home games, as well as to bring in opponents who have some familiarity with our fans," said NDSU head coach David Richman. "Geography has made getting games a challenge, and this allows us to add some good mid-major programs to our schedule."

NMSU tweets also say a WAC-Summit challenge is coming. The WAC board is even talking about it. In addition to the previous select Big Sky-Summit challenge that will mostly be a future Great Northern members.

RE: The Big Sky and Summit schedule a crossover challenge series with select schools
NoDak,

I linked the tweet by a Las Cruces Sports Reporter in another thread. It might happen, or it might just be NMSU and perhaps GCU scheduling a few mid-season out of conference games (many such "challenges" fizzle and wind up just being a few home and home series).

But what does scheduling an extra Basketball home game every other year do for your Great Northern? As far as anyone else, besides you, it's just some basketball scheduling response to an inability by mid-majors to schedule majors. A big nothing burger.
