Gadie, who once committed to us, now to Western Carolina.
TE Whitmer to Western New Mexico
Thanks for the scoop and good work.
Western Carolina is a FCS school and Western New Mexico is D-II.
I need not say more...
Whitmer is sure struggling to make a decision. Now he says he's going to Weber St.
He did indeed sign with Weber State.

Kainer signed with Tyler Juco which is what I was figuring yesterday. He'll be playing P5 ball after 1 year at Tyler.
Although we didn't land him, I'm pretty impressed they found him, offered, visited, etc.

Too bad. I fell in love with his tape from the drills.
In a couple years folks would ask: "How did EMU get him?"

I think Whitmer is a spring graduate although I think a full qualifier.
The question is: Are we still in on him or did the ship pass?
Do we want another TE? Did Wigers get a 2017 OR '18 scholarships?
How many scholarships left to give next month. Was CC trying to 'budget' 2017 scholarships leaving one open for a mid-year transfer (e.g., Wiegers).
This is PURE speculation and more an example than statement: Did the staff say to Whitmer we'll sign you in February instead of December and you can come during Summer (saving that scholarship and giving it to Wiegers) instead of January?
I'd think a smart coach would keep one mid-year scholarship open in case a graduate eligible player comes along who is too good to pass up. If one doesn't then that scholarship can be given out in February.
I saw that Whitmer made a visit to Weber State.
That suggests to me several important things:
1). Obviously he did not sign and appears to be uncommitted.
2). It doesn't appear that he'll go to a P5 program (e.g., L'ville). So he seems to be a G5/FCS canddate?
3). I don't know why he did not sign with EMU and if it could still happen.
4). Weber State is a very good FCS program which played deep in the FCS playoffs.
This was my take on Whitmer a while ago. Weber State is a very good FCS team. He'll probably end up doing well.

I prefer Howie to a JUCO OL I think he could be a mainstay of an OL if he can remain healthy. Actually we signed some solid OL prospects earlier.

RE: 2018 Football Recruiting
Dear Friends.
I don't know if many of you watched the interview with Coach Creighton after this latest signing period. When Greg Steiner asked if he was pleased with the number of three star players that Eastern acquired, his answer was that he finds players to fit Eastern's needs. He doesn't care about their star ranking. If, he and his staff feel that a player fits their needs, that's whom they go after. Stars have nothing to do with it. I thought that was a very candid way of discussing recruiting. To a point, I would agree with his thinking. I hope it brings success to our football program.

BTW, I double checked the article for information as to the late signees, etc.
What I discovered is that WMU definitely, but no surprise, had the best MAC class among MI h.s. seniors. Once again they were best: head and shoulders ahead of the rest.
I see EMU is 2nd ahead of Toledo, CMU, BG, etc. That is the other big story!!
That is surprising. We normally struggle in the rankings vs. TOL, CMU and sometimes even BG.

EMUs class may not be ranked at the top but they did a great job of adding players, increasing the talent, and plugging holes. The bottom line is they addressed their own needs.
The only rankings that really matter are the standings at the end of the season.

RE: 2018 Football Recruiting
Bottom line, we finally have some tangible signs of better recruiting. Break ground on the new facilities soon, get to another bowl game this year, and the momentum should continue. I've been one of the harshest critics as far as recruiting, but give credit where credit is due. Nice mix of high school and Juco's should be the consistent plan going forward. I think Nunez really injected some life into the recruiting, and hopeful Peterson and Needham will do more of the same.
Notice we now have a recruiting coordinator, an assistant recruiting coordinator, and a recruiting assistant. Progress!

RE: 2018 Football Recruiting
This little vignette shows the joys of FB recruiting and player development: There are JUCOs and grad transfers, redshirts, true frosh who can play, and frosh who should redshirt.
It shows also a good lesson of life be it person or running an enterprise: there are short term goals, intermediate and longer term goals.
Carter Stagner seems the perfect recruit who will blossom with a red-shirt year. Not big or strong enough as a true frosh DE, but will develop in time with work in S&C (intermediate). We have recruited JUCO DE who can step in a play game #1 (short term)
