Week 5 of Conference Play
NMSU and UTRGV start out with easy NAIA games tonight. I doubt they will choke.
Thursday will see some interesting games. Will GCU be able to bounce back from a loss and beat UMKC. It shouldn't be too difficult for them especially since it's at home.
CSU takes on CSUB in Bakersfield. CSU has been close in most of their games and this one might be their first conference win.
Saturday's match ups features some interesting games.
GCU vs CSU. Maybe Dancing will finally see his upset.
NMSU vs UTRGV. UTRGV has played well but the Aggies have stomped WAC opponents at home.
UVU vs SU. Now this should be an interesting game. UVU is second place in the WAC and SU has some quality wins. The game is in Seattle so that might give SU the slight edge for an upset.
UMKC vs CSUB. CSUB might get the upset with this game since it was close last time. If they can carry momentum from the CSU game then that upset will seem more likely.

It's like Canyon is trying to find their identity. Right now, Gerard Martin is running the point! Not even sure what's going on there. I'm glad he's getting more playing time, but he's a natural 4, and a 3 at best.... not a 1!!! I don't think it's playing to his strengths as a wing guy and someone who can shoot off the bench. However, he has the highest basketball IQ on the team, so maybe Dan's trusting in his ability to make good decisions with the basketball.
Lopes should pull away in the second half, but the longer they let UMKC stick around, the tougher it'll be to shake them.

umkc fouls gcu too much in both games to have a chance at the end. They only have Leek inside to defend.

Agreed. GCU can go a little deeper than the Roos, so, they could weather the storm of whistles on both sides tonight. They called it too tight.
Credit to your guys for pressing and competing so late into the game. It was closer than the final score shows. Right at the end fouls did UMKC in.

Yep... when you get in that mental funk it’s hard to shake it. Hoping they limit his minutes so as to let other guys who can produce get on the floor. Gotta earn your time on the court.

I didn’t watch the game but I noticed GCU had almost double the rebounds 24-45. The Roos aren’t that bad of a team they just lack size.

4 of the Roos' 7 guards went for double digits, absolutely carving up GCU defenders. Time after time after time, they set up the iso and blew right by [insert GCU player name here]. Milstead is probably the only Lopes player with the lateral quickness to defend average to above-average speed guards.
Without a true rim protector or willingness of coaches to move off of straight up man-to-man defense, I can't see that playing out well for us come WAC tournament time.

RE: Week 5 of Conference Play
GCU is really really slow, period. If UMKC had one or two decent big men they would be dangerous. The guards for UMKC are really quick and shoot well from the 3 point line. I think if a team presses GCU they get killed. Benson is slow and is a terrible defender. He has one move to the basket, drive from the left side and hope for a foul while he throws it up. Braun, due to injuries, age, cheeseburgers, whatever is also a terrible defender. GCU has a decent record because of all those home games vs. horrible competition. At this point right now I can't see them making a run in the tourney. They will lose more games. They are a solid 3rd or 4th place finish in the WAC depending if they defend their house vs. Seattle who had an usually poor shooting night at home vs. GCU. I foresee 3-4 losses for GCU in WAC play come tourney time. I know my Chicago State prediction was way off vs. GCU but GCU is out of the WAC regular season championship run already, count on that. It is fun watching Dan Majerle turn every shade of red/pink during the season. My favorite is when GCU misses a point blank layup and he turns around in disgust and just throws himself into his chair talking to himself and his assistant next to him! Precious!

90-67 Aggies over the Valley. Aggies had a slow start and the Valley started good. Game settled down and the Aggies took over. This game featured 2 of the best scorers in the league. Aggies held Dixon about 6 points lower than his mark at 15 and Lofton scored 34. Had a big scare when Sidy went down but he seems to be ok. Good game Valley.

Ugly game by both SU and UVU. Kavas with a career worst game, 0/10 and 0/6 from 3. 1 point. UVU not having Manyang was likely a big reason Menzies went off for his forth straight doube-doubles, but either way he is on fire these last few games.
Big win for SU, biggest for Hayford thus far.
Huge crowd too of 3200+ and electric atmosphere for homecoming. Haven't seen anything like it since the SU/Idaho game in 2014-15 season

Seattle is 16-8 and they have a very good shot at winning 20 games, something they have not accomplished since the 1968-1969 season. Hayford is doing a outstanding job in his first season at Seattle.
Seattle had 4,448 for their home game against CSUB the week before. Good signs for the program. Seattle should be able to average 4,000 to 5,000 per game if they can put a good team on the floor.
The attendance averages for the WAC are pretty solid to this point:
GCU - 7,004 per game
NMSU- 5,296 per game
UVU- 3,401 per game
CSUB- 2,779 per game
UTRGV attendance will get better when they move into their new arena in the fall. That arena will hold up to 7,688 for basketball. Cal Baptist recently had 4,414 for their win over rival Azuza Pacific at home. They will easily average 3,000 to 4,000 in that arena when they join the WAC this fall.
UMKC and Chicago State have good arenas to play in, but they are both playing some really bad basketball and they are not going to fix their attendance issues without competitive basketball programs.

It gets pretty quiet on this board when the Aggies are rolling. The only time I see activity on this board is when there a chink in NMSU's armor.

I was just thinking how quiet it was all week, other than some chatter about adding some schools. As for GCU, the last two games were against UMKC and CSU, so, not a lot to really get intonas the games played out as expected. I plan on posting tonight throughout the game. I hope the Lopes have a good showing. After UVU lost again I’m hoping GCU can beat them at home convincingly and finish in sole second place with 20 wins. Who knows what can happen in Vegas.
