Sigh...

9:25 left in the game and down by 16. We can actually make a comeback if we tried something different.

I really don't get it. Against the Tribe we played a lot of zone, pressed on made baskets and generally shook things up on defense. Why aren't we doing that tonight? Did we just give up? A team is eating us alive man to man, are we just hoping things get better?

This looks like the team earlier this year. We haven't done anything to make it look like we even want to win this game this half. We may as well walk off the court if this is our plan to end this game.

Head scratching, for sure.

Hofstra shoots 71.4% in the 2nd. half and we make no adjustments whatsoever.

It seems crazy to me as well.

Hard to play zone when you're down 10 plus and they have Foreman. Hawks didn't execute defensively plain and simple. It's one of those things that if you don't have it down cold going in, it's hard to get it back. Hope that they learned a lesson. At least some of the kids were showing some hustle at the end like Estime.

Why is it hard? When you're getting smoked in man, and they hit 6-7 from 3 in the second half, how much worse can it get? We have been mixing in a lot of zone and pressing on made baskets for every game we kept close. And tonight we decide to stick to man, and lose by 20? Why quit what's been working? Let the press and zone fail, then change to man if you're getting burnt.

Before today, Hofstra was tied for 44th fewest turnovers per game out of 351 teams.

Your starting guards shot well, but Gustys had more points and rebounds than Cacok and Bryan combined, and Gustys had fewer field goal attempts and fewer free throw attempts than Cacok and Bryan combined.

Mixing zone may have helped some early in the 2nd half, I agree, but if that's not your game plan, you try to get execution also for the future. I understand your view point though, I do.

If your goal was to finish in the top four and avoid playing 4 games in 4 days, then last night was pretty much a must win game...there was no future for which to try to get execution. You needed to do what needed to be done to win that game..even if it didn't mesh with your long term plans.

Exactly. It just felt like we gave up after the first few minutes of the second half. It really did look/feel like one of our games earlier this season. We took a beating and didn't do anything to change things up in an attempt to get the W. It's even more perplexing since our game plan recently has been to mix in a lot of zone, press on made baskets, etc. It's been a successful game plan, not sure why we'd change it in the first place?

Agreed...Estime had a solid game playing 25 min with 10pt, 4 rebounds, 1 assist. He looks to be a solid contributor next year.

RE: @Hofstra
Bad game. Hofstra killed us on the boards especially on the offensive glass. It seemed they scored on every possession because if they missed a shot, someone was there to put it in. I think the announcers said they had 10pts off offensive rebounds in the first half. That was the difference in the first because we actually shot pretty well.

Team needs to erase this game and move on quickly to Northeastern. Need a W on Sat. Still time to get out of the bottom 4. Elon is tanking quickly and we still get them at home.

Disappointing performance for sure, but we're still only a game out of 6th place. Still a lot to play for this season.

Hofstra isn't good at getting turnovers. Before yesterday they ranked 288th out of 351.

You had only 7 turnovers, but Hofstra scored after all of them.

Top 6 avoid playing Saturday.

RE: @Hofstra
Zone doesn't work against a team that is already killing you on the offensive glass.

At some point we simply need to be able to play man-to-man defense effectively. We can't assume that zone, or even the press, will save us from losses like these. It might have made the game a little closer, but won't help us much in the long run if we can't learn to play effective man-to-man in the halfcourt. It's a must in this league.
