Either they compete with the NFL and run out of cash or they are a minor winter/spring league and people lose interest. By the way, could there be a worse time to start a professional football league?

Yeah 2009/2010/2011 when the UFL tried. Right now with the kneeling controversy crap being an actual near billionaire conservative business man he might see a niche that makes money.

Be interested to see if they allowed Frosh/Sophomores in college to play. If they do, this could be a game changer.

I've said before that the best way to make a viable professional football league is to allow high school seniors to get drafted and make money right out of high school until they are eligible for the NFL draft.

That way, you can showcase some of the best young players in the country and people might watch, unlike with just having NFL rejects.

That, and it would help parity in college football because programs like Alabama and Ohio State won't be able to horde the elite players.

Of course, McMahon is just going to go for the pro-wrestling-ized version of the NFL that will eventually fail.

Id like to see the teams made up of these players: a handful of veteran players, the rest made up of guys with 3 years in the league. That satisfies the three year out of high school rule for the NFL, as well as gives guys from college a few more years to prove themselves at a possible higher level then college, and get paid for their talents and likeness, something the NCAA doesn't do.

Not sure I would have come back as the XFL, maybe rebranded as another name. But with Vince still involved, the PR could be a nightmare from the beginning anyway.

I think Georgia State just found a tenant for its stadium. Maybe they could get a million bucks in rent.

More likely Grady stadium found a tennant. How many people will by tickets to watch arena league talent?

First time around, the league average attendance was around 22k per game. I'll be surprised if this thing actually happens.

Since the original AFL, which eventually merged with the NFL, how many professional football leagues have started and flopped? I don't see the point or why owners would risk losing millions. I actually thought the Canadian Football League expanding to cities like Memphis, Shreveport, Baltimore (before they got the NFL) back was interesting idea that might work- but even that didn't pan out.

RE: XFL coming back
If done properly and planned well, it can succeed. The original XFL had a chance, started hot, but then turned into a fiasco of stripper cheerleaders and a circus of a show. They changed the game enough to ruin the game, and the actual product of football, was awful.

If they would come in and work with the NFL, as an actual minor league for them, it could work. It would work and succeed just as minor league baseball, minor league hockey and now, even minor league soccer works. There is a place for minor league football, but you can't come in expecting and wanting to compete with the NFL, work with them, not against them.

The USFL did quite well until Trump lost his mind because he couldn't get an NFL franchise. A spring league could succeed but Vince McMahon is not the answer.

Interesting strategies though...no politics allowed, Vince owns every team so he can absolutely set the rules, if you have a criminal record you're out. It appears he's going for a squeaky clean image to counter everything the NFL has done wrong.

IF he can stick to those ideals and if they schedule the season in the late spring/early summer when people start feeling that football itch it could work.

USFL was comically under-funded and players were literally racing to the bank to cash their checks. The first ones there got their money. The last ones there didn't because there wasn't enough in the account to pay them all.

Rick Neuheisel has told that story many times about when he played for the San Antonio Gunslingers.

Unfortunately he has already screwed that up by saying the league would start the weekend between the AFC/NFC championship games and the Super Bowl.

But I agree with you, start the league in April/May. I say start it the weekend after the draft.

And they had a handful of big names that played for that league.

XFL will never even achieve that.. NFL just has the bigger checkbook.. by a lot of 0's.

You know.. I believe we have reached a saturation point with football.. its practically a 10 month. As much as I love football.. it is nice to get a breather.

The window was missed with the original XFL. We are now at a point of declining attendance, declining TV ratings and overall declining interest. A competing league will never survive. A proper minor league system, where you expect 5,000-10,000 people a game and salaries that match that can work. A place for guys only 2 years out of high school, JUCO guys, sophomores that have worn out there welcome at a 4 year school. Maybe that NFL backup QB that is looking to prove his ability in actual games. The RFL, Regional Football League, had a decent plan back 25 plus years ago. Mobile had a team, but the league wasn't funded properly and didn't complete the whole first season.

Minimally. Giants and Cowboys fans are not going to stop being Giants and Cowboys fans. The reality is this like other attempts will be a minor league at best and no attempt to counter the NFL directly has lasted more than 3 years in the TV Era. The New USFL has been trying to get off the ground since 2008. Their major barrier to entry is that they feel they need capitalization of $500M before they can start up. If Vince is doing this alone his capitalization will be a LOT less than that. So what does that mean for quality of players and coaches? Is this going to be a German football league level of talent and by extension attendance?
