But that has no shot of happening.

Would this scenario work with 16 teams? If there were 6 at large openings, and most/all of these slots went to P5 conferences as you would expect, then most P5 conferences would have 2 horses in the race as opposed to the Mac's one. Might seem more "fair" to them by their currently crooked standards, but at least we'd have better access.

Perhaps. I like using 12 since it keeps the importance of the regular season intact for everyone by basically forcing you to either win your conference or have an Alabama-like season with one loss to an elite team while also incentivizing more difficult scheduling so you get a first-round bye or an easier matchup. They still wouldn't go for it though.

The 8-team setup with one G5 slot seems to be the direction this is trending and I think it's the best realistic scenario, but as pointed out they'd almost always get the worst seed. We need a football Pairwise to at least ensure consistency.

It probably has already been said, but Western Michigan was definitely wronged in that they never received a title shot. UCF’s biggest problem was schedule, IMO, but in doing research on WMU, they had the schedule to prove they deserved a title shot. Ohio State/Washington had no business being anywhere near the playoffs last year, IMO.

2016 OOC:

NW(7-6) 22-21
North Carolina Central(non FBS) 70-21
Illinois(3-9) 34-10
Georgia Southern(5-7) 49-31

Not seeing a significant P-5 win that would justify a title shot in current playoff system.

Considering they lost in the Cotton bowl, it is safe to state they were not wronged.

MAC, Sunbelt, MWC and CUSA should merge together into a super conference(Big 50). Each division champ(MAC, Sun Belt MWC, CUSA) gets into a four team playoff with its own title game. For basketball send top 4 division teams into a 16 team conference tournament.

But in its current setup, I'll be the first to admit that WMU didn't belong anywhere near the CFP last year. We landed at #15, right where we should've been.

Same with UCF this year, whose non-conference included FIU, (4-8) Maryland, and Austin Peay (a date with Georgia Tech was cancelled due to the hurricane).

Having lived the season last year, I didn't feel any frustration that we weren't in the CF playoff. Maybe I was too easy to please, but I was fine with the Cotton Bowl. Probably a once in a lifetime experience.

Hold on a Tick...

UCF beat a team that defeated both teams in the NCG (Auburn) in their Bowl, and they beat two ranked teams during the year. They had a much better case for the #4 seed than WMU had.

They were a 4 loss team. Alabama was a 1 loss team that won the National Championship. Georgia was SEC Champion with 1 regular season loss and a loss in the National Championship game. USF had close wins over SMU, USF, and Memphis.

More people need to realize this.

Auburn had 4 flippin losses. Yes, congrats to them on beating UGA and Bama, it doesn't really matter though. They lost 4 times. Trying to use the transitive property and acting like UCF would beat Bama is ridiculous. I'm all for the smaller programs, but UCF didn't exactly play murderer's row. Not to mention, their best win came from their own conference, which is the crux of the argument.

If they hadn't played UCF, 3 losses. UCF's schedule wasn't the best, but they beat a bunch of the teams by quite a bit.

Auburn didn't get up.

I'd say based on UCF's entire resume 7 the or 8th is where they should have finished. Prior to the bowl game? 10th. They had no meat on their schedules bones... Memphis was good. But lost to ISU. ISU is a prime example of a good team that can beat ANYONE on any given day but had too many tough games to be undefeated. UCF would have been more of the same. UCF vs. Wisconsin is a play in for 6th in the country if one more game was to be played. UCF was not better than Ohio State who sat at 5th. Ohio State is even a product of too many tough games to win em all. Iowa on the road can sneak up on you. UCF didn't have those type of week to week tests.
