RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Also, hopefully by the time you fellas record there will be some updates on how Talley is feeling after that game. He played a decent bit of minutes, but at times looked like he was limping or favoring the right leg. Hope he's good to go for Tuesday!

Because of the holiday, we're actually going to wait until after the Drexel game to record. So, the podcast will drop Wednesday late morning/early afternoon. Feel free to ask questions now or save them until after that game.

Speaking of "slackers", that ref we had against Greensboro College looks a little bit like the principal from Back to the Future.

RE: Latest Episode of "The Beat and the Beard" UNCW sports podcast
Questions:
1. Last year Ingram, Bryce and Flemmings played 33.5, 34.3 and 34.7 minutes per game respectfully and we pressed a lot. This year Talley, Taylor, Cacok and Fornes play 28, 26.8, 27.9 and 25.5 minutes per game respectfully and we don't press at all. That means Flemmings played almost 7 minutes more per game than Talley who plays the most on this team. And that those three players last year were on the court about 5.5 to 6 minutes longer than our starters on average.
Why? And could playing our top four players 5-7 minutes more per game have a positive impact on our performance?
2. Does it make sense to have both of our freshman on the court as guards at the same time? Neither are go to scorers and both make freshman mistakes. Our level of play dips dramatically when we sit Talley and Fornes at the same time. Against Towson, we had cut the lead to 6 after only 5 minutes of play in the second half. We sat Fornes and Talley and the lead ballooned to 15 in about 4 minutes. Why?

What gives on D? Is it lack of effort? Not big enough, strong enough?

Enjoyed the last episode. One topic that was interesting was Keatts philosophy on defending the three. It was true, and I heard him say many times that his teams focused on defending the three. Although we all thought our man to man was not good, we tend to forget that we defended the three really well, which makes it easier for teams to drive to the bucket. Based on how bad our three point defense is now, it isn't a bad philosophy

Yeah, but remember how much we fouled? That was a result of those guys going inside and getting past our guards. There were times where the only reason teams were in the game was because they were getting so many shots at the FT line. I remember teams being in the double bonus with like 10 min left in a half. While, yes, we defended the three well... but that gets equaled out if you're giving more than the avg charity tosses.

True, but we won games. And FT's only allow a team to score at most two, not three points on an offensive trip. He was willing to trade off the fouls and drives for two to stop the three. As we are witnessing right now, being one of the worst in the nation defending the three leads to a really bad record.

We also lost some games because of it that we should have won. I'm not saying we weren't really good. We were. It was great. But we were NOT a good defensive team, at all. We played a good press and caused a lot of turnovers and had a high powered offense. However, we were not a good holistic defensive team.

Depends on your definition of "good defense". You can't stop or do everything, you have to pick our priorities. When you press, you risk a fast break. When you sell out stopping the three, you risk players driving around you and drawing fouls. BUT, when you press, you get TO's and fast breaks. When you stop the three, you limit scoring potential for other teams.

Fair. Can't take EVERYTHING away from your opponent. And running a 4-guard lineup a lot of the time, easy layups were always going to be a possibility for teams we faced.

CG is right. We were that great defensively and we fouled a lot. But offense was a machine
And we usually won the turnover battle
But if the opponent got set they generally got a good shot off or were fouled

What has been the difference defensively the last two games? Clearly they are doing something better, but what is it?
