Superconference Scenarios
Post your superconference scenarios here, realistic or otherwise!

Here's a potential (distant) future scenario wherein the Big Ten and SEC have absorbed the choicest schools from the other power conferences to become enormous continent-bestriding 26-school colossi. (Actually, the SEC footprint isn't much larger than the current one.) The remaining power conference schools and the top non-powers have cobbled together the "Big 26", a similarly oversized conference.

Each school has 5 protected in-conference opponents. For football, the rest of the 9-game conference schedule is filled by a rotating block of 4 of the remaining 20 schools, allowing a full conference playthrough in 5 years. For basketball, the protected opponents are each played home and away, while half of the remaining 20 schools are played once each year for a 20-game conference schedule.

Here are the conference members (in caps) and their protected opponents:

I figure some of the protected opponents can be exchanged every 4 years, since they're not all especially compelling pairings. The 16-team CFP supplants conference championships and includes the top 6 Big Ten schools, the top 6 SEC schools, the top 3 Big 26 schools, and the highest-ranked school from the remaining conferences and independents (below).

AAC: Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Rice, Southern Miss, Texas State, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UTSA, Wichita State (non-FB)
CUSA: Appalachian State, Charlotte, FAU, FIU, Georgia Southern, James Madison, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Western Kentucky
MAC: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami-OH, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan
MWC: Air Force, Fresno State, Hawaii (FB-only), Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, UTEP, Wyoming
SBC: Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia State, Liberty (FB-only), Little Rock (non-FB), ULL, ULM, NMSU (FB-only), South Alabama, Troy, UTA (non-FB)
IND: Army, Massachusetts, Navy

Do we really need another of these inane threads? There's already 2 or 3 on the page right now as it is.

Hey, lighten up, buddy -- it's the offseason! If you read, this is a different topic than the others anyway. Also, if realignment discussion bothers you, maybe this isn't the right forum for you. 03-wink

Superconference Proposals
Bummed Rice didn’t make your Big Big Ten. We might actually have a case under a setup like this.
That said, I do like what you did geographically with AAC & CUSA.
I like that everyone has playoff access, but I don’t like your playoff format.

How about something like:
Week 1:
Big Ten, SEC, B26, G5 semis
Week 2:
Big Ten, SEC, B26, G5 finals
Week 3:
B26 champ vs At Large
G5 tournament winner vs At Large
Week 4: (playoff semis)
Week 3 champs vs B10& SEC champs
Week 5: natl champ game

So technically you’ve got a 9 team tournament with autobids for the three large conferences and byes for the two top leagues.
I’d only give at-larges to teams that weren’t still playing after week 1 so that an SEC at large still gets an off week, and all conf champ games are single elimination to the national title.

IND: Army, BYU, Boise State, East Carolina, Liberty, Massachusetts, Navy, New Mexico State, Notre Dame (Big East takes them back)

Why: I think Notre Dame would, ironically, be able to have a full independent schedule with the diminution of major conferences, as teams in the first three would still want to schedule them (e.g. Purdue, Michigan State, USC, etc..). ND would have games against BYU, Army and Navy to fill out their schedule. A Notre Dame schedule under this scenario would have the likes of Texas, Michigan State, Navy, USC, one of Pitt, Miami, Boston College, LSU or Stanford, plus any of BYU or Army. Then another season they'd have Michigan, Florida State, UNC, Syracuse, TCU and either Purdue or Michigan State, plus Navy and USC. They could create their own bowl for whoever is left out of the "Big Three" in-conference playoffs. I think this would entice the likes of BYU, Boise State and East Carolina to do their own bowl deals.

As for the "Big Three" you have four divisions of six teams, 8-game regular season, one exhibition game against a body bag before the season. Division winners automatically go to playoffs, with the best four from the other conferences or independents filling up the remaining spots.

Lots of schools are struggling as it is. Taking P5 money away from schools like Wake Forest and Washington State then putting them in the same conference where they have to ship teams across 3 or 4 time zones is a recipe for disaster.

Much rather speculate on the new bowl tie-ins in 2020, at least people have a chance to have a realistic chances of getting a 1 - 1000000 prediction correct. 04-cheers

Once Liberty becomes FBS, split the 130 teams into 65 two-team conferences based on a blind draw. You play the other team in your conference four times (two home, two away). Top 64 teams advance to the NCAA football tournament (tiebreakers are record and point differential).

There, solved college football realignment, someone pay me.

RE: Superconference Scenarios
I enjoy the ridiculousness of superconferences. I far more prefer smaller, regionalized, rivalry-based conferences.

Did Memphis do away with it's football team? Any way, I like the idea of two conferences. A-L on one side and M-Z on the other. Just have a free for all. Games with multiple teams on the field at the same time. Games decided gladiator style. One team from each conference decides the champion in a cage match.

If it ever went to a "power 60" league or new subdivision or whatever, all 60 schools would come from the current 65 power schools. New schools to the power club would likely be the ones left out (Utah, TCU, Louisville) along with Baylor. I'll presume Notre Dame maintains independence.

RE: Superconference Scenarios
Another plausible(-ish?) future superconference scenario! This results from the P5 maintaining the status quo through the expiration of the current Big 12 GOR and up to the expiration of the current ACC GOR. As has often been presented, the Big Ten, SEC, and Pac cannibalize the poor ACC and Big 12. Here each of the P3 conferences reaches 18 schools, with 3 divisions of 6. A fourth 18-school conference forms from the ashes of the ACC and Big 12, along with the cream of the G5 crop.

For each 18-team conference: In basketball, there are 22 conference games (2 x 5 division + 1 x 12 other schools). In football, there are 9 conference games (5 division + 2 vs. each of other 2 divisions), allowing for a full conference playthrough in 3 years. A 2-round conference playoff is held between the division champs and a wild card. The CFP accepts the champs of the P3 conferences and a wild card.

Big Ten
East: Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, Penn State, Rutgers, Virginia
Central: Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue
West: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Wisconsin

Pac-18
East: Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech
Central: Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, UCLA, USC, Utah
West: California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, Washington State

SEC
East: Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, NC State, South Carolina
Central: Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech
West: Arkansas, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Ole Miss, Texas A&M

Big 18
East: Boston College, Central Florida, Connecticut, Miami-FL, South Florida, Syracuse
Central: Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, West Virginia
West: Baylor, BYU, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas State, Memphis

Note: Based on the current strength of the teams, I admit that the Big Ten's divisions are not competitively balanced, but they preserve most of the important rivalries.

RE: Superconference Scenarios
The Big 10 should have gone after Syracuse and Kansas when they had the chance and left Maryland and Rutgers alone.

Syracuse
Penn State
OSU
Michigan
MSU
Indiana
Purdue

Illinois
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Nebraska
Kansas
Iowa

Seems Rutgers was always on the B1G radar though.

If the B1G had picked up the rest of the old Big East northeastern schools, I wonder if they would've had a chance at Notre Dame? They also should've picked up Missouri.
