Maisel: B1G took Rutgers after Georgia Tech (?!?!) turned them down
This weird little paragraph is buried in Maisel's column about Atlanta being the capital of the college football universe:

Quote:Everybody? Not only does Atlanta sit at the geographic heart of the SEC and the ACC, two of the conferences that make up the Power 5, but five years ago, when the Big Ten expanded to 14 teams, the league didn't take Rutgers until it had been turned down by Georgia Tech. Atlanta has brought in so many transplants that nearly half of the Power 5 schools have alumni watch parties on autumn Saturdays.

http://www.espn.com/college-football/sto...me-atlanta

Nobody here thinks this is what happened, right? Any "Georgia Tech to the B1G" talk was weird and peripheral and, you know, after the Maryland/Rutgers acquisitions had happened. If I am remembering things right. Why would he pull this imaginary tidbit out of his hinder?

I thought it was common knowledge that Rutgers was always the B1G's target (all those cable boxes) and the issue was finding a partner for Rutgers. Am I mistaken?

Because Rutgers has wrestling. GT doesn’t. Wrestling is a B10 requirement.

Yeah, that was probably the dealbreaker.

It's hard to overstate the importance of wrestling to the BTN.

It may be important, but I'm sure that it was not the primary deciding factor between Rutgers and GT.

Georgia Tech would be on an enormous island. They have some solid academic peers in the ACC, so it's the best conference for them.

Actually, it was the other way around as I remember reading. It was Maryland that the BIG wanted first and it was Rutgers that was put on hold until Maryland decided what it wanted to do. Something about Rutgers invitation being contingent on what Maryland would do and that the BIG would have gone in another direction if Maryland said no. I dont remember it all but I do remember those points.

Also, the Georgia Tech thing makes sense as I also recall that the BIG said something about pursuing schools in the sunbelt because of population migration. It would have been a HUGE coup if they could have gotten G Tech to come aboard along with Maryland.

RE: Maisel: B1G took Rutgers after Georgia Tech (?!?!) turned them down
The story I was told at the time by a guy who is a close friend of John Swofford was B1G had UNC as target #1 and would gladly take Duke to get them and Florida State was target #2. None of the three were interested and B1G started working on UVA and GT in the hope of creating a sense of urgency if not panic that would put B1G in position to scoop up at least one if not both of UNC and Florida State.

In the end Maryland being in dire financial straits created the only ACC willing to bite.

ACC folks like to get paid but they also like playing each other, it's a much tougher nut to crack than many believe.

You are remembering incorrectly. Georgia Tech was probably contacted by the Big 10. At the time Virginia had overtures as well. Virginia Tech had quietly received them from the SEC. I'm sure that Maryland, Virginia and Georgia Tech with the hope of North Carolina to 16 was part of their strategy.

Given the money problems I'm surprised that Tech would have turned them down. I do know at the time Tech had feelers out to the SEC but then so did North Carolina and Duke which made it crystal clear that we were only the destination if all Hell broke loose. Things were exceedingly precarious at the time and if a stalwart like Virginia had thrown in I'm sure Tech would have said yes and then a North Carolina school would likely have headed their way, probably N.C. State.

Wouldn't it be a different world today if Virginia had been interested and Tech therefore said yes.

But we'll never know with 100% certainty because just as with the SEC's meeting with the Va Tech folks at the Greenbriar in W.V. it didn't ever happen if it didn't succeed.

Maryland dumping the ACC for B1G is the most shocking realignment betrayal of all time.

My understanding at the time was Georgia Tech, Virginia, and North Carolina all big targets, but not interested. Florida State wasnt targeted for academic reasons (university presidents making these decisions). I think all would have been targetted over Rutgers at time, but like Rutgets better than most.

NO. That is a complete myth that has been debunked by the Big Ten directly multiple times.

As for the OP, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the Big Ten contacted Georgia Tech. Whether there was a true formal offer is a little bit different, though.

Make no mistake that things like wrestling and contiguous states are completely irrelevant. If Georgia Tech, UVA, UNC, Duke, Florida State or a whole host of other ACC schools were willing to leave, they would have all been in the Big Ten over Rutgers. Maryland leaving was also the driving force - this was all about who was coming *with* Maryland. The Big Ten would have never added Rutgers without Maryland committing first (whereas there were lots of schools that the Big Ten would have considered *with* Maryland).

Swagger or someone who follows GT can correct me but I think GT was stuck with interim leadership during this phase.

So, let's say this did happen, along with a Texoma 4 to Pac situation. The Big Ten picks up Nebraska, as well as UMD, UVA, UNC, and GT. The SEC takes NCSU and VT along with Missouri and A&M. The remnant Big 12 takes in most of the remaining ACC schools and Big East football schools to become the Big 16.

Big 16
East: Boston College, Connecticut, Rutgers, Syracuse
North: Cincinnati, Louisville, Pittsburgh, West Virginia
South: Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Miami-FL
West: Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State

Big Ten
East: Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State
North: Illinois, Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue
South: Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia
West: Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Wisconsin

Pac-16
East: Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech
North: Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State
South: Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah
West: California, Stanford, UCLA, USC

SEC
East: Florida, Georgia, NC State, South Carolina
North: Kentucky, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech
South: Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss
West: Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, Texas A&M

Wake Forest and USF are left out, and TCU never gets a chance. Notre Dame remains independent, just how they like it.

No, the SEC would have taken Duke and North Carolina, Texas A&M and probably Missouri although in that mess we may have opted for Virginia Tech instead of Missouri.

Nebraska made #12 in the Big 10. So Maryland, Virginia, probably N.C. State, and Georgia Tech would have been more likely for their 16.

Had they considered F.S.U. we would probably have taken both Clemson and F.S.U. to halt their advance in Atlanta unless they wanted Miami and Syracuse too.

I didn't think UNC would go for the SEC. Do you mean they wouldn't go anywhere without Duke? And that the Big Ten wouldn't take UNC if it meant they also had to take Duke?

I'm skeptical about the Big Ten's desire for NCSU, FSU, or Miami. If they get NU, UMD, UVA, and GT but not UNC, spot #16 comes down to ND (if they want it) or Rutgers. Of course, ND is more preferable than any of the other potential adds, but they'd only join if their backs were to the wall.

Because Rutgers has wrestling. GT doesn’t. Wrestling is a B10 requirement.

Im sure for 50 million they would have added wrestling.

What bugs me is Maisel dropped that in there like it was a statement of fact, common knowledge even. But this would be completely new realignment information--right? I followed this stuff pretty religiously during the realignment chaos era and I never once heard "Rutgers was picked by the B1G after Georgia Tech turned them down."

I thought it was common knowledge that Rutgers was always the B1G's target (all those cable boxes) and the issue was finding a partner for Rutgers. Am I mistaken?

Because Rutgers has wrestling. GT doesn’t. Wrestling is a B10 requirement.

Im sure for 50 million they would have added wrestling.

West Virginia already has wrestling.
